Pleasant alternative to the real deal by Lee A. Dye "Lee Dye"
As our 15 months old has taken a keen interest to my laptop, we felt this would b nice alternative. Turns out, not really, they know the difference. Still, this is a fun toy for the little ones.
Essentially this unit makes an assortment of music, sounds and interacts with keyboard input. Two volume levels are present and we find the lower setting to be perfect as it can get a bit loud on the higher setting. There are plenty of voices, sounds, and music to keep things from getting too repetitive. There is also a little mouse that-well-is shaped like a mouse, that can be moved up ,down, left ,and right with a corresponding voice stating the movement. The mouse is attached to the unit and cannot be removed so nothing can be lost or swallowed.
Durability is very good on this item with no small items that can break off or removed for consumption or chocking ( This is of primary concern for us as it should be for all).
One thing to watch out for and as another reviewer stated, is my boy closes the lid on his fingers or hand. Now for some reason after he closes the lid he places all of his 8 month old might into ensuring it is closed. So I would not walk away and leave him long with it alone as who knows how much pressure it takes for him to feel it. So far he has not injured himself and he has not cried or made any other type of commotion -yet. Just something to watch out for. I am sure if it really hurt he would stop but I am a paranoid father.
EDIT: Well, my boy finally did push too hard and hurt himself with his finger inside the lid. No damage to either finger or toy but something to look out for.
Now my boy does tend to get bored easily and this item is no different. In fact now when I open the screen and play with it with him, he just casually reaches over and closes the screen-often. I think my wife taught him that so that I would do the same with my own laptop.
The toy itself is great and though no where near the sophistication of the real thing it certainly did not cost as much or as dangerous either (he pulled the L key off my laptop keyboard).
Battery life so far is very good with the unit being used everyday for 3 weeks and no sign of weakness. This is a relief as some toys eat through batteries very quickly and things get costly over time as the good batteries are not exactly cheap. We tend to go through 10-15 batteries a week in his other items such as rockers, toys, etc..
Oh, how I envy him and his simple laptop; no investments, no news, no work emails, no etc.... just lights, music, and sound.
Our boy really does enjoy the time with this toy and though he seems now to be more fascinated with closing the lid than anything else there are times he enjoys just slamming his fist at the keyboard and looking up at the screen. Now THAT he did get from daddy! ;)
Good idea... Bad execution - Be Careful!! by nyscorpio "nyscorpio
I work from home on a laptop often, and my 6 month old loves to play w/my laptop - so I thought this would be a perfect toy for her.
She does love it, and bangs on the "keyboard" just as she bangs on mine - the lights and sounds are great - love that it has an OFF button - so many toys don't!
However, she also loves to bite on anything she can get her hands on - including this toy laptop. While trying to use her left hand to pull the cover down into her mouth, the right hand was caught and pinched between the lid and the keyboard. The plastic is shaped in a way which hurts - even when I closed the toy on my own thumb to test it.
I recommend parents do not let their child play with this toy unless you can literally sit there and stare at them the entire time. VTech would be wise to put some sort of safety on the lid of this toy.
great learning toy for baby by AMK "Max's mum"
We bought this for our son when he was 6 months old because he is always wanting to play with our computer. All the other toy laptops I've seen are for older babies/toddlers so we got this one. He is having a lot of fun with it and it's a great toy. He really likes pressing the buttons and hearing the songs, and opening and closing it. There are three modes, and right now he likes the music best. There are two volume levels which is nice. It's very durable. The only issue I have is that he keeps closing the laptop on his fingers. It doesnt really hurt him, but does pinch his fingers a bit. He's learning now to get his fingers out of the way! I think he'll like this toy for a long time.
Cute toy but over-priced here by mav2006
My son (like most kids) is totally fascinated by adult laptops - I got this with the hope that he might leave mine alone, but he isn't easily fooled. However, he has spent time being absorbed with this toy. He likes pushing all those buttons, and the movable mouse is nice too. It has 3 modes - the one that plays the music jingles seems to be his favorite. Personally, I don't think it has much learning utility. There are better educational toys out there. But hey, when a kid needs a laptop, he needs a laptop.
One more thing - at the time of writing this, the price on Amazon is 39.99, which seems rather steep to me, considering I just bought this for 9.99 at Toys R US. So it might be worth your while to do some comparison shopping before you spring for it at this price.
My son got this as a gift at around 4 months old. After hours of screaming while we were out of town meeting family for dinner, he instantly stopped when this got turned on, and proceeded to stare at it for the next hour of dinner and start of the drive home until he fell asleep (of course at that point I had to keep turning the music back on, but hey, can't argue with quiet!). He went through a phase where he just kept shutting the lid, which seemed to be great fun for him (although it was several months until he could also OPEN the lid too). He also went through a phase of trying his best to bend the lid all the way backwards, which I think is what finally did it in. Now that he's a year, it still works great MOST of the time. Once in a while it starts sounding like a broken record, it just gets stuck in a loop. My guess is that in the bending it backwards process, he loosened a wire or something. Like I said, most of the time it still works great, it still holds his attention. You've got to figure no matter how durable something is, after 8 months of banging, drooling in, chewing on, and bending backwards, just about anything's going to have problems! Also, battery life it pretty good. Haven't had to change them yet.
Worth the money by M. Anderson "Mom of
We a Vtech Tote 'N Go Laptop Plus for our 3 year old VTech Tote 'N Go Laptop Plus and knew that we would need to have something comparable for our 14 month old. He really likes it. Not as much as my 3 year old likes his product, but he enjoys it none the less.
Pros: That there are 2 volume settings. It automatically turns off after no one plays it for a while. Bright colors. 3 different learning settings. It has been dropped several times and still works great. Cute songs. Great carrying handle.
Cons: It didn't hold my son's attention as long as I was hoping. I'm sure part of that is that he is only 14 months, but there are other things that do keep him interested for a long time.
But still my overall opinion is that it really is a great product and well worth the price. Oh, and a bonus, my 3 year old also likes to play with this toy too.
Wonderful Toy by Jackie Willer-Vescio
Wow! What a nice toy. So far, my son really enjoys playing with the VTECH toys I have purchased and this one has proven to be a purchase well worth the investment. This particular toy is nice because while I am working on my laptop, he keeps busy with a baby version that is all his own. This toy is colorful, the voices and music are pleasant to listen to. There are three different learning modes so that your baby can learn with this toy. There is also a volume control. As a parent of an 11-month old, I would recommend this toy.
Durable and well-designed. by Chrysoula Tzavelas
My son has had this toy for at least six months. He plays with it every day, and is especially fond of the music mode. He loves the flashing lights and buttons to press in any mode. I haven't seen any learning advances, but he's still very young and not talking much yet. Well, okay, he knows how to turn it off and on. And I just asked him where the 'square' was and he pressed the right button.
The cheery Vtech voice and songs can be a little annoying, especially when it attempts to determine if the child is still interested before hibernating: "Are you there? Time to sleep!" But it eventually just became background noise for me.
We've had to change the batteries twice since we've owned it, and he regularly throws it out of his playpen when he's done with it, onto wooden floor. I'm astonished at how well it's held up. We've gotten an amazing amount of play out of it so far.
World's Toughest Computer by Brienna F.
I've been saying for a month that I should write a review for this baby laptop. I have a wild 9 month old who likes to push the buttons sometimes but has more fun beating it up, standing on it, walking on it, sitting on it, carries it by the handle, turns it into a see-saw and finds more uses for it every day! We've had it for 3 months and it's still in perfect working condition, even after all the abuse! It's one of his favorite toys. The music never seems to get old to him. The one negative though is that one time, on closing, the lid did pinch his fingers. Didn't stop him from loving his laptop though.. he's even playing with it right now!
Christmas Toy for Toddler Son by LuckyACE "ACE"
This was a decent buy for the price. It's a little geared more towards babies (age is 6 mos & up), but the next laptop from Vtech starts at ages 3 & up. So, for an 18 month old, this doesn't do the best at entertaining him. It is sturdy (my son has stepped on it a couple times). Recommend purchasing for a 6mo-1yr old.
My 15 month old loves it by Yael
my son got it has a gift when he was 9 month old.
in the begining, he mostly enjoyed closing it.
Now, he loves it - he plays the songs and dances to them.
the toy is also pretty light weight, so he can walk around with it.
This is the "Must take" toy for us, and it's great.
Has potential, but stops working by airforce brat
My one year old loved this at first. Then it just stopped working. It was one of the few toys that he was only allowed to play with with a parent making sure he didn't break it. Customer service as Vtech was wonderful. They said I could return it to the store or send it back to them for a replacement.... So I went to the store where I got it, and they had one more in stock. It didn't work, and it was still on the shelf. I was pretty disappointed as my son really enjoyed playing with it. So, now I am looking at another brand to replace it.
Excellent Flawless Toy for All Ages! by Copperfield
I bought this toy computer for my granddaughter when she was 7 months old. It fascinated her then and she loved pushing the buttons and hearing the songs, loved it when we helped her open it and loved closing it herself- it talks to you upon opening and closing and even talks to you if it's on and you're not using it- "Are you there?" The power automatically shuts down when it hasn't been used for about 5 minutes. Soon my granddaughter learned how to open it herself as well as close it and started experimenting with all the different gadgets, including a "mouse" that's in the shape of a mouse and says "up" and "down" when you slide it up and down. My granddaughter is now almost 2 years old and she still adores it and I can see where she will be using it for at least another year or two. It has many different categories of use- songs, shapes, sounds, objects, etc. The kids learn how to operate the switch to go from one category to another. My granddaughter now knows how to switch it to music and push the right buttons to hear her favorite songs. There are lights that flash on for different objects, too. She is starting to learn its more sophisticated uses now- how pushing a button twice will bring on a special sound effect, etc. This is a toy that really grows with the child. It is very easy for kids to use from babyhood on. It's enormous fun, brightly colored, amazingly durable and has a handle so the child can carry it around. I should also mention that it's been almost 2 years now and we've never had to replace the battery. This toy computer is basically flawless- I recommend it with 5 stars plus a few more.
Great educational toy at a great value! by Grandma JoJo
I purchased this item for my one year old grandson, who enjoys it immensely. It's lightweight and has a handle so he can carry it around with him. It's easy to use and does a great job of holding his attention. The volume control is another feature that I appreciate since some of these electronic toys are often rather noisy. I highly recommend this product for any child over nine months.
What's the Point? by Brandi W. "Brandi"
My 18 month old simply tosses this to the side. She tends to pound on the buttons for a short time and then gets bored with it. I simply think there is no rhyme or reason to it and instead is just an overpriced light. On the positive side, we can toss it in the diaper bag and carry it with us.
Laptop for grandson by Peggy Stephenson
He loves this toy. He likes the music and that it opens and closes and talks to him. It is very durable and I think all little ones would enjoy this toy.
vtech babys learning laptop by brendy629 "brendy"
my granddaughter loves to play with this toy. she enjoys the sounds and lights and likes to listen to the music.
My son really played a lot with when he was 2 months to 6 months as a "tummy time" toy. Now that he can crawl and sit (he's 10 months now) he is much less interested in the toy. Now he really just likes to open and close it.
My Son liked the lights when he was two or three months old. But the music didn't play long enough for me to be able to walk away from it. Now that he is seven months old. He can't really play with it, because he keeps closing the lid. It drives him nuts when that happens. When it is open he does like it. But it is not open often enough for him to really get to play with it much.
Very affordable and fun toy by 123pjambo
I've purchased this toy just couple days ago and I love it. My baby love it and what else needs to be said? Colorful, educational and fun toy!
I like the educational aspect of this toy, and my son likes to mash on the buttons at six months old. My only problem with it, and this seems to be a theme with all V-tech toys, is that it nags you like your wife. "Are you home? Let's go home! Let's learn!" Ugh. It really bothers me that when my son has lost interest in it and moved on to another toy, it continues to nag him for several minutes. And he'll have three or four V-tech toys sitting around him at tummy time, and they're all yelling "play with me! play with me!" He really enjoys them, so I can't complain there, but I usually turn the volume to the lowest setting, or turn it off immediately when he's done.
I really love this toy, I got it for my nephew when he was 10 months and at first he just closed it. When he turned 11 months he actually started playing with it it keeps his attention for about 15 minutes. I tried the toy out myself seeing what it all could do & it is amazing. It teaches children sounds, shapes and colors. & so much more. The only issue is when I put this with my nephew in his pack & play he would stand on it for leverage. Now the laptop skips & the voice repeats its self a lot. I don't let him play with it as much now because it is some what pointless. Overall it is a great learning toy and is a great learning tool also.
My little girl is one and this has been her favorite toy since about 6 months. It has 3 settings: music, colors, shapes and she loved hitting the keys to make the music when she was younger and now shes really starting to like to figure out the words. Great toy if you want them to be able to use it for a long time. And educational.
Baby laptop by Mysterious shopper
This product should be fun for a much older child. I bought this for my 10 months old but she is more interested in closing it up. I guess when she is older she might find it more fun with the lights and sounds!
My daughter is a year old and she loves this laptop. She loves smacking the buttons and making it play music.
I bought this for my 6 month old grandchild. She enjoys it now but I anticipate that she will get a lot more fun from it as she matures!
My son loved this but isnt an easy learning tool. I think the sounds and noises interfere with the learning.
I had to take it away from my son. by Ktkay1976
My 13 month old son loved this toy, until he slammed his fingers in the lid about 3 times. He's a tough little guy too but he was pretty hysterical! I ended up taking it away from him in the hopes that once he gets a little older he will be able to use it again. I hated taking it away because it's such a great toy, he loved all the buttons and sounds and would leave me alone when I was on my laptop. I wish I would have listened to the other parents' warnings before I bought it!
This toy was bought for my son when he was about 6 months. He loved it. Dragged it all over banged it up and it's still in tact. Now my 4 month old is enjoying it. As other parents mentioned tho... be careful. Babies love opening and closing the lid and if they drop the lid to hard on their fingers, it does hurt a lot. If ur baby is 6 months and other just keep an eye on them. I would recommend it tho.
I gave this toy to my grandson for Christmas when he was 6 months old. He is now almost a year, very active, and he just cannot get enough of the Learning Laptop! He makes straight for it when he is placed on the floor, and he never tires of pressing the buttons and swaying to the music. I thought perhaps this might be a Johnny-one-note toy, something he would be bored with quickly. But just the opposite! Also very durable. My grandson leans on the top, pushing against it with his weight as he stands up, and the toy seems to take the abuse well. Definately a favorite toy.
