So cool! Unique addition to any kid's room. by Amy Tiemann "creator
I have seen boys and girls ages 2 to 8 captivated by Uncle Milton's "Moon in My Room." As an adult, frankly I think it's pretty cool too!
The moon model has a contured, textured surface. It is a couple of inches thick, curved, so it has real depth. The moon cycles through 12 different phases. I have not seen any evidence of the light turning on automatically after dark, as advertised, but it works fine manually or by activating the automatic 5-seconds per phase cycle. The moon is lit up from a light within and the plastic does not glow in the dark when it is turned off.
The Moon in My Room is advertised as appropriate for ages 6 and up, but since it's mounted on the wall I don't see why it can't go in a toddler's room as long as the remote control is secured. I will echo a previous reviewer's comment that you need to keep track of the remote, as I don't think it would work otherwise.
I am incredibly disappointed with this product. The moon worked great when we first set it up. My 5 and 4 year olds loved using the remote to change the moon from full moon to half moon. We enjoyed how the moon would automatically turn on when it became dark.
Everything was great until a week later when the moon stopped working. The batteries had died within a week.
The moon looked cute up on the wall even though it wasn't lit up, so I left it as it was for a while. After a couple of months I decided to try replacing the batteries and see if it would work.
After putting in brand new AA batteries, it did not light up. A few hours later it came on. We put the moon up on the wall and again enjoyed having it turn on when it became night. Within a week, the batteries were dead, again.
I called up Uncle Milton, the company who makes the Moon in My Room, and they informed me that the batteries dying in less than a week is normal if you keep the moon in the on position. I explained to them that the instructions never mention having to turn the moon off every night as it already has an auto shut-off. She said even with the auto shut-off on the moon, it is normal for the batteries to only last a few days.
For the batteries to work longer than a week, you have to turn the switch on the back side of the moon. We keep our moon on the wall up high to look like a moon, so turning the switch on the backside is completely impractical. There is no on/off switch on the remote to turn the auto sensor off, so the only way to turn the switch is taking it off the wall.
Overall this moon is not worth over $10 to use as a decoration if you can't keep it lit up for more than a week. The money I spent on the batteries to keep the moon lit for such a short time was a complete waste. If I could do things over, I never would have purchased this product and I will not be recommending it. Save your money for something else.
Loved it until it broke! by N.Cummings
Well this was a big hit and the whole family enjoyed it a lot - for about 2 days- then one of the lights went out. We opened up the back and found that the lights are LEDs so they are not replaceable. This was a huge disappointment. I looked at the instructions and it said before you return call Uncle Milton. So we did - every day this week - and they keep saying they are closed for the holiday which was 3 days ago. I contacted the seller and am hoping for an exchange. If it works... it is awesome!
This item works perfectly for a night light, probably one of the coolest night light's out there. It is perfect for kids that are afraid of the dark. It can be left in any phase of the moon, which helps control the amount of light being emitted. It can also be set to automatically change phases every five seconds. Of course, it is also a learning device, showing the various phases of the moon up close and comes with a cd, which we haven't listened to yet. I like the automatic shut off feature, so it doesn't matter if it is left on, which is handy at night. My first thought was that it appeared cheap and could have been slightly more realistic, so 4 stars.
Ever since I first pointed out the moon to my daughter when she was eighteen months old, she has had a deep fascination with the moon. This toy is great because it brings the moon into her room.
Pros:
- Its just smaller than the size of a dinner plate
- It lights up in phases (4 total) with a remote
- Manual Mode: It has a remote control that allows on off of each phase manually
- Auto Mode: With the remote you can put it in auto mode which cycles through the phases automatically through all the cycles in about 30 seconds
- On Off Mode: Allows you to turn on all phases on at once or turn them all off
- The moon has a light sensor that turns on the moon whenever you turn off the light.
- It turns itself off after 30 minutes automatically.
CONS:
- The moon has a light sensor that turns on the moon whenever you turn off the light. This winds up having the moon on more than I'd like it to and during the day you can't tell if its on or not so this causes some battery waste.
- It uses 6 AA batteries and I've had to change them too many times to count so I've gone to rechargeable batteries...so if you hang it too high, you'll wind up having to bring out your ladder quite frequently.
- It only has one handing hole for a nail so if you want to put it on the top of your ceiling or on a slated vault wall you will have to cut an additional hole in the plastic back.
Overall, this is a great toy - my daughter adores it and it has brought quite a bit of joy to her so I highly recommend it. It's not quite perfect but the challenges with it are small compared to the joy it brings to my daughter every night.
Planned Obsolescence - DO NOT BUY by D. Cairo
We bought this three years ago for our son for Christmas. Other reviewers have noted that it eats batteries. Well, that's not the only problem. Eventually the bulb(s) burn out and they are LED bulbs - they can't be replaced. I wrote Uncle Milton and they DO NOT do repairs. So, into the garbage the plastic hulk went. Not very environmentally friendly design. Lame.
Moon in my Classroom! by Mary Layman
I am teaching 1st-3rd graders basic astronomy. Every morning at our meeting someone uses the Moon in My Room to demonstrate the phases. They understand how to read a lunar calendar, and can use it to figure out the phase for the day if they did not see the moon the previous day or night. The remote control is a little tricky and getting little kids to use it well is a challenge, but they can all name the phases as someone clicks through them using this tool. It's great that the maria are portrayed so realistically, as the kids have learned how to tell if the moon phase is waxing or waning by looking at which maria are visible. It really helped them build understanding when they could touch the 'topography' and connect it with a photograph and map of the moon, and they were able to use the vocabulary they were studying to describe the surface. I am very grateful for this tool, as it has enhanced our learning dramatically.
Ours never worked as advertised. Automatic on function never came on. Manually turning it on would send it cycling through the phases of the moon, you could never turn it on to the current phase and leave it on that phase. Finally the CD wasn't included. Unfortunately it was a gift without a gift receipt, the store won't take it back, and I'm not paying to ship it to Uncle Milton.
Really Cool, Educational Night Light by L. Doherty "J&B's Mo
Got this for my 9yr old. He liked it but loved it after his teacher borrowed it to show the class the phases of the moon. It's nothing fancy but I didnt expect it to be. How excited are the phases of the moon going to get? It's at best the most educational night light I ever bought for my son!!!!!!!! The whole family likes to change the phases with the remote. I do agree you need to keep a close eye on it! Can't work the moon without it. Hope I helped.
Another Good Idea Wasted Due to Poor Design and Greed by Lenoir
I don't know about the rest of you, but I have had it with companies that waste a good idea in the effort to get our money and run, only to leave us with what amounts to a disposable product - a plastic one, no less. Our landfills don't need it, and our wallets don't either. Worse, perhaps, is the waste of a perfectly wonderful idea. There is no excuse for this item not being designed to function better and longer. The same can be said for most of the other "space" products out there, like star and constellation projectors and nightlights, all of which rate poorly and are over-priced.
The Moon in My Room is actually quite nice when put up on the wall and lit. Sure, it's a cheap plastic shell with an annoying battery case (screw-top, which doesn't seem like a big deal, except that if you actually use this thing, you'll quickly get sick of unscrewing that battery compartment to replace the batteries every few days). When lit up in a dark room, the light it casts emulates actual moonlight beautifully, and it looks fairly realistic.
The problem, as others have pointed out, is the extremely short battery life. I started with regular ones, and those were drained within a couple weeks, so I switched to rechargeables, and those die within days. And this from only lighting the thing for maybe 45 minutes a day! There is nothing relaxing or enjoyable about a product that, when you have it on, makes you feel pressured to turn it off. I even tried conserving by only lighting it in crescent mode, thinking that using fewer lights would help, but no. I have a clock that will run on one C battery for 3 years. Sure, the Moon lights up and all, but seriously, why isn't it more efficient? It's not like it's powering lasers or incandescents.
I've read this thing has even broken pretty quickly for many people. Mine didn't break. I simply got sick of taking it down off the wall to replace the batteries, so now it sits packed in a box. What a waste.
amazon needs to get it together by N. Gower
This is showing for a Moon in My Room by Uncle Milton which can be purchased at Walmart for 19.88 right now, and the pictures are for the National Geographic Moon in My Room, which is not the same thing. They have pictures up for both the Uncle Milton version and the National Geographic... hard to tell what you're actually purchasing here..
Uncle Milton might be rotating in his grave at turbine speed ... by Steffan Piper
I was really looking forward to this product because it really looked cool and from the labeling on the outside of the box, it seemed as if this product / science based toy did a lot more than was suggested. Let me just break down what's wrong with this point by point so there's no confusion.
1. This Moon does NOT automatically phase at all. You have to manually click through it and the stages are in sharp contrast from each other.
2. The Moon turns itself off after a very short period of time, negating the usefulness as a night light. There are no controls either to make a timing adjustment for preference.
3. When using the remote you not only have to be incredibly close to it you have to point directly at it as it operates via line of sight and not RF. The range is very limited.
4. This thing should be hooked up to the Atomic Clock like most other newer devices that read the moon phases. An incredible no brainer that would've been a cheap mod. Makes you really wonder about how cheap this thing really is.
5. The batteries on this are incredibly ridiculous. Really? 4 AA's for 1 white LED? What kind of cheap Chinese circuitry did they put in this? Wiring from an off-brand 1940's Tube Television? C'mon, Uncle Milton.
6. The number of faulty product reviews must be acknowledged, which only emphasizes my previous point. Typically, I never make any mention of this but it's just overwhelming here.
Point blank ... the last thing I want is "Uncle Milton" in my room, his moon, included.
poor customer service by K. Whitney
Bought this for my son's b-day and it worked great for 4 months. When the lights stopped working and I had replaced batteries in both the moon and the remote twice I called Fat Brain Toys, through whom I purchased it, and then Uncle Milton. Niether company was responsive nor gave any help. Only if it was within 90 days of purchase, so they say. So if you want a toy that works for 4 months and then leaves your child disappointed - this is it!
A cute addition to the boys' room by D. S. Lerew "kidrev2
This is a cute alternative to a night light for our sons' room. The automatic turn-off feature is great because we can put our older son to bed with the Moon in My Room on, and we don't have to worry about turning it off after he falls asleep.
The only thing I don't like is that it seems to eat batteries, even though it's only on for a half hour or so at bedtime.
I Love it......however.... by Jamie Colorado "Jami
I love this product however......it seems to burn up batteries like crazy
all of the sudden. The price is a little high too! I'm sure this product could be sold cheaper. That being said....we really love it. My little girl plays with it alot. I just wish the batteries didn't burn up so quickly. It seems really bad lately and she's playing with it less so it doesn't make any sense.
Decent product but not great by Cart
Don't buy this unless you plan on attaching the remote to your forehead with duct-tape; if you lose the remote you cannot operate the moon. The moon also has an automatic time that it comes on; it's supposed to be when it gets dark, but it comes on way too early to be any good, because nobody is in their room that early, and it only stays on for 30 minutes. When it comes on by itself, (because its too early) you can barely notice it is on.
Why not for yourself, too?! by The Silent Gondolier
Come on, everyone! Why only buy this for your children? I am a thirty-something adult and I have one in my room. It's great to just turn off all the lights and lie down in bed or sit in my comfy chair and listen to music by moonlight. Don't sell yourself short. Add some atmosphere to your own room. It's a great product and eerily realistic (in a good way).
Milton Moon in my Room is a Winner! by C. Schilling
We bought Uncle Milton Moon in My Room for our son's room. It is a wonderful addition to his "space room" and we like that it has a timer on it, so he can have it on before he goes to sleep.
Son LOVES his MOOOOOOONNNN by The Goose
Bought this for my son's room. He really loves the moon, so I thought what the heck. Brought him in and his jaw it the floor. He has played with this constantly. He likes to use is at a night light when he goes to bed. The 30 minute shut off feature is awesome. A must for anyone that has kids that like the moon!!!
Hack Opportunity by Ann Rand Corporation
I got one of these for my cousin's space-themed room, and he loves it. But as other reviewers have noted, it eats batteries like crazy. So I hardwired a low-voltage AC adapter I liberated from a broken telephone answering machine into the battery terminals, and everybody's happy.
Beware: There is no warranty, and it's not durable by Bill Sheppard
I purchased two of these, one each for my daughters. They enjoy them very much and I'm happy with the purchase. However, a recent experience makes me caution against purchase of this product.
After two months one of the moons stopped functioning (simply didn't light up), an issue which many others here have mentioned (look at the other one- and two-star reviews). I swapped batteries several times, and tried the remote from the other moon, but it was simply dead. I checked the packaging and documentation and could find no mention of a warranty. Upon emailing UncleMilton.com customer service and politely asking for instructions on an exchange or repair I was told "I sincerely apologize about the issue you are having with your moon in my room, it is imperitive [sic] you contact the retailer you purchased it from in order to get a replacement." Most retailers won't take exchanges beyond 30 days, so in effect there is no warranty on this product. While it's not something which should fail, my experience suggests it certainly can.
In short, I like the product, but can't in good conscience recommend it due to the unfriendly policies of the manufacturer and lack of durability.
Moon in My Room by Leah Ishmael
I, uh, am actually 17 years of age and bought this for myself and one for my girlfriend. I have had it since last Christmas and haven't replaced the batteries or had problems with the lights; granted, I don't use it often because I... don't exactly need a night light. I just thought it would be a cool addition to our rooms. Maybe you should keep the remote away from your kids-- I know that's the point of the toy, but likely if they're switching it on and off it's going to run out a lot faster than normal. Like I said, mine still works and it sits on the "ON" position. I don't have any problems with it turning itself on and off, exhausting battery power, either.
I also read some comments complaining that the moon isn't realistic. It looks pretty close to what's outside my window me, just a little more detailed.
It's, uh, awesome... bluntly put.
Perfect for a moon-loving 2 year old! by Amber Norris
I purchased this for my 2 1/2 year old daughter for Christmas, and she loves it. I did take the advice of other reviews and bought rechargeable batteries (hey, it's working out good with a little kid and about a thousand things that run on batteries!) However, I don't feel like it is using them super fast, like other people have said. We have been on the same batteries since Christmas. I think that's pretty good since we turn it on every night before bed.
Excellent night light and good-night ritual by C. Bliss
We have this up on the wall for our baby and use it as a diaper changing night light. The luminosity is just right for changing baby but is not too blinding for sleepy eyes. My 9-year daughter also loves to cycle through the phases before bedtime.
The room has to be very bright for the night light to turn off automatically. The remote is very handy and we liked the 3 viewing options.
We'll be getting this as gifts for our friends and their babies.
Awesome Educational Product by leuzstewart
My 5 Yr old daughter loves this, she told a friend it was a waning crescent moon out, everyone was floored!
Every night we look up what moon it is on my iPhone and set her moon.
Her only comment is, "Daddy can you make my moon stay on all night?"
So, my only comment is that it would be nice if you could plug it in so you could leave it on all night.
It's beautiful toy ... I love it by Ahmad Al Hudban
I received this toy before three days. it's beautiful toy,I love it.
the material it's very good.
because my hobby is Astronomy I will put it in living room although i have over 30 years old
Really cool (until it stops working) by T. Sabo "Damgaard"
This is a very neat item. It looks absolutely realistic and it's a natural for a nightlight in a child's room. The problem? Ours stopped working about two months after putting it up. The remote stopped working right away, so I had to physically turn it on (not easy if it's hung high). Soon after that the switch stopped working all together...a real bummer. It's still hanging there, just doesn't light up :(
DON"T BUY THIS! It's cool. For a while. But then... by Jimmy Roberts-miller
The good part is this is a cool night-light type gadget and my son has really enjoyed it that way. The problems with it are two-fold. The first is the battery issue, which many people have commented on. I eventually got rechargeables. The second is durability. For something that just hangs on the dang wall, the fact that it conks out like it does is ridiculous. Our first moon lasted a few months before the lights just quit working altogether. I took it apart and tried to repair it myself, but there were no obvious bad connections. Oh well, these things happen, so I replaced it. Well, the replacement lasted a lot longer, but it has just stopped working as well. This is INSANE! It's a set of lights with an electronic timer! It hangs on the wall! It doesn't get tossed around or dropped on the floor or carried in your pocket! Why should it EVER break? Or the remote. I have a remote keyless entry on my car, and that gets lugged around in my pocket, tossed on the table, etc., and it works fine after (at this point) seven years. I can only presume that the guts of this device are some of the shoddiest and cheapest imaginable. It's too bad, because its a neat idea, and as I said my son likes it a lot. But I'm not throwing more money away at this point.
An excellent gift by Nelie P. DeGreet "Er
My children love having a moon in their room at night. The moon automatically turns off after 30 minutes. Part of their "getting ready for bed" routine is to select the shape of moon they want. The only downside is we have to replace the batteries quite a bit. Other than that, it's wonderful!
