5So happy to find this game by Candy Chamberlin

I was trying to find a game to play with a client who has dementia and ran across this in an article. After I bought it I tested it out with my kids (25, 24, 19 and 11) and myself (47). We had so much fun!! It is one of those games that can be played at different levels. We started getting quite inventive on where and when to play to maximize our points and block our opponents.

I then played with my client. She and I did not keep score. We just made the chains with either shapes or colors and added wherever she first recognized a play. No trying to strategize where to build for future etc. We also played with both of our tiles up so we could talk about the best places to play. She likes this game and actually remembers having played before and wants to play again. The 'rules' have to be re-learned but the fun remains.

For one more note, we had a group of my daughters friends over and four of us played Quirkle. They were all 19 - 22. That got pretty cutthroat <lol> They all want to play again.

I HIGHLY recommend this game. I think I'm going to buy a 2nd one so more than 4 can play together (We played with 5 first night and it does work too).

5Good Game but What Were They Thinking on Colors? by RLH

Everyone in my family had the same initial reaction, "Looks lame." After all, it's just making rows of shapes or colors. After the first game we all figured out there's more to it. As my daughter said, "Well, checkers looks easy too; it's just moving pieces diagonally to the other side of the board."

On the downside, as another review mentioned, the pieces are cheaply made- low quality wood and paint, non-uniform size. But the most egregious design flaw is the selection of colors. For me, the red and orange are so close that even in good light I find myself holding them up at different angles just to make sure I don't confuse them.

I must compliment the author of the instructions. As you would expect on a game that appears simple on the surface but ultimately has many nuances, communicating those to the game player is essential. The directions walk through a hypothetical series of moves that pretty much cover any scoring or strategy intricacy that you might run into.

Bottom line: As long as you have decent color vision and are not a stickler for perfection in construction then put this game in your cart and check out right now. Your family will thank you.

5A light strategy game that doesn't turn off folks like Euro-style games by Frank Garriel "fgarr

I love euro- german-style games. This one has some strategy, but not a lot of it. That's a mixed blessing. If you're a fan of Carcassonne, Catan, etc., you'll find this game lacks enough strategy. If you typically play American style board games (Monopoly, Scrabble, Scene It, Trivial Pursuit, etc.), you'll find the introduction of more strategy refreshing without being bogged down in a myriad of scoring rules and options.

This game is quickly becoming a family favorite because there's enough familiarity and strategy for everyone to enjoy. It's simply a well-rounded game.

Three small gripes though on the quality.
1) The pieces aren't uniformly sized. The variation is slight, but it's there. Why?
2) The printing isn't perfectly centered on the tiles (probably related to the way they were cut)
3) Red & Orange are too difficult to differentiate in anything but optimal lighting conditions.

These aren't enough to keep us from enjoying the game. For the colors, I compensate by laying my tiles face-down, and viewing them by cupping 3 in each hand. Everyone else I see stands them up like Scrabble tiles. Holding them my way makes it easy for you to tilt them to catch the light right and simultaneously protects your hand from being viewed like my family "inadvertently" tends to do.

5Much more strategy than you might think by Vannie "Sher"

What I love about this game is that it is almost as much fun to help your competitors find a great lay-down as it is to find your own. We often have no idea who is ahead and getting the win isn't all that important. I've gifted this game to most of my siblings.

5Fabulous Game! by L

I purchased this game for our 5 1/2 year old daughter thinking I would hate the game but the rest of the family would enjoy. Well I was pleasantly surprised -it is my favorite game to play, and not just because I win often. Our daughter enjoys it as well. We let her keep score which is one of the reasons she likes the game. She has beaten the adults before. We plan fairly -we don't need to dumb it down for her, she can hold her own and thinks about which tiles will give her the most points.

The game is easy to learn, fun to play, and addicting. Our only complaint, which has already been mentioned is the red and orange tiles can be hard to tell apart under some lighting. Pink (or white) would have been a better color for either one of them.

If your younger children don't like it at first, play partners with them or wait a few months and try it again. It really does have educational value as well as being a lot of fun.

5Great game! by Evan

As most of these reviews have mentioned, it is a great game. My friends and I (we're all 27) spent just about the entire weekend playing.

A previous review mentioned poor build quality - the pieces in our set were wooden and seem like they'll hold up quite well over the long run.

The game comes with a cloth bag that you can use to store all of the pieces, which also makes it easy to take the game with you whenever you travel. You couldn't actually play in the car, but it is a lot easier to take with you than a bulky square box.

5Qwirkle Is For Everyone! by Word Warrior

Everyone in the family loves this game. It's not so difficult that the youngest can't figure it out . . . and it's a challenge for us old grandma types as well. I love playing with my ten-year-old grandson who holds him game piece over his head and smiles and says, "What's the name of this game, Grandma?", and then puts his piece in its place to make a Qwirkle! The adults enjoy playing without the kids as well.Qwirkle Board Game

5Dominoes and "Set" by Anita Miller

Fun new game that combines dominoes with the card game SET. We played with our adult children, and in teams with our adult friends. Everyone enjoyed the game. Seems like a game that younger children would enjoy too. Colorful, study tiles, but red and orange are too similar unless playing under bright lights. We added a black dot to our orange tiles.

5Best table top game ever by Walter Rittenhouse

Has more stratagy and less luck than most group games. Play two, three, or four. Lot's of fun. Addictive. A domino type game.

5Qwirkle by Nancy

We like this game because everybody from the three 4yr olds to grandma can play togeteher. We soften the rules for the younger and play by the rules for the older. I also use it as re-inforcement during the school day for the younger ones.

5Very engaging by R. Heijermans

There is a good reason Qwirkle won the MENSA award for board games. It is a simple game to learn--TIC TAC TOE on steroids--but very engaging and somewhat addictive. Children can play it easily, and it would help younger children with shape and colour recogniton and space relations. It is a strategy game that involves a bit of luck and also teamwork when played with four or more players.

Qwirkle requires a fair amount of surface area on a table. You may think of it as a combination of TIC TAC TOE, [wordless] Scrabble and Dominoes in nature. You may also want to make sure you play it in sufficient light, as the red and orange tiles can be difficult to distinguish in poor light. Players who are colour blind may find Qwirkle difficult to play.

The game is simply but well made of painted wooden tiles that should last a lifetime. I highly recommend it as a very enjoyable and challenging game for both young and adult players. It is refreshing to play a game that involves no electronics, timers or dice.

5A 'Must-Have' Family Game by Barbara Davis "Grann

My family and I often meet at family gatherings and play games. While we tend to try lots of new games, only a few of them have earned a place on our 'permanent game shelf'. Qwirkle quickly became one of our favorite games because it is easy to learn, easy to play....yet challenging because every game is different. My husband and I purchased multiple copies of this game to be given to several family units at our upcoming family reunion. I'm sure we will have a fun and boisterous "Qwirkle Tournament" involving all ages (4-99)!!! Even our youngest grandchildren (ages 4-9) quickly mastered basic moves and picked up 'higher strategy' thinking.....it's hard to find a game that is easy enough for the youngsters, yet appeals to adults, too!!

5Great game! by beachkid

I gave this to my boyfriend for Christmas and next thing I knew my whole family was playing it for hours! I will note that none of my family is under the age of 22 years old so it's definitely a game that adults will enjoy as much as children. It was a good blend of luck and strategy; the idea is simple but is challenging enough to keep you interested.

The only complaint we had was that the red tiles and the orange tiles can be hard to tell apart (especially playing in the evening when the lighting isn't as bright).

5Simple to Learn, Crazy Complex to Master by Jeff Sorensen

This game is incredibly simple to learn. But the dynamics of play make it a game with awesome replay value. Every time my group plays this game we find new and interesting levels of strategy. The concepts of blocking moves, counting tiles, gambits, timing, etc are all things that develop over time.

The set we purchased was well made. A few of the blocks did have chips, but that was easily fixed with the touch of a black marker. We also found the gloss finish of the blocks to be a bit distracting, but a light coat of Testers Matte finish spray paint did the trick. The only ongoing problem we've had is the color proximity of the orange and red blocks is difficult to see under dim lighting.

This is a great game!

5Awesome game! Everyone should know about this game! by M. Zonca "rainytuesd

What a fantastic game! We heard about it from a friend and played it with them once, and we were hooked! It's a game that all ages can enjoy. We even take the tiles out with our two year old and make up games with the shapes and colors. It has become a regular evening activity with my husband and myself. We find it's a great way to relax and spend time together. The creators are brilliant! I would give this a 10 star rating if that was offered! Buy this game!!

5Excellent Family Fun by Marie Perry

We love this game. It is totally fun and challenging. Would highly recommend to anyone. I did mark it down one star because some of the blocks were peeling. Called the company who made it and they quickly replaced them. Told family members about it and they love it too.

5CA dreamin by M. L. Ackerman

I bought Quirkle as a Christmas gift for my grandson after playing it at a friends on a trip this summer. I haven't opened my own yet but was very impressed when I played this summer. We were 3 adults and a 4 year old. She didn't need to know how to read, do math or even know the names of the shapes but the 4 year old beat all of the adults! Additionally, this was not a case of the adults letting her win, we were all engaged and had fun with the game. I highly recommend it for any age group!

5Fun for a variety of ages by Tina Lee

Kids ranging in age from 9 thru 3 are enjoying this game. Loads of funs and helps them visually with shapes as well as with numbers - as they have to add up points and keep track of their score. Took the game on vacation and it packed well and the kids enjoyed it in the hotel. Loads of fun that keeps them busy for a long time.

5Our family loves this game by P.B.

We have been playing Qwirkle for 2 years and LOVE it! Even my sister who doesn't like games will travel 45 miles to play with us! It's simply one of the best games ever...fun, easy to learn, with a little bit of strategy thrown in. We are a competetive group, and it's not unusual to find someone counting the tiles that are out when deciding to put out that 5th tile (the 6th tile makes the Qwirkle and extra points).

I agree that the orange and red colors are hard to distinquish at night. We put a black dot on the orange tiles and that has helped immensely. I'd also like to see a tile holder of sorts like scrabble..but it's not really necessary. Lastly, I often wonder what Qwirkle would be like with 'wild' tiles.

Buy this game..it's great!

5Great toy! by TwinsMom

I purchsed it last year on sale on Amazon but didn't end up playing it with my kids until now. What a great game - you really need to think strategy! Easy to set up and clean up - which is always a plus. Durable as well and easy to store! Highly recommend! I played it with my 8y yr old daughter and she had a blast!

5Qwirkle by MOE "MOE"

Fast service. Bought this for 3 grandchildren ages, 9, 7 and 5. Fun for everyone even the 5 y.o. Easy to set up and play

5One of the best games I've ever played. by Recliner Reader "San

I first played Quirkle with a 6 year old and his grandmother. The game seemed very simple--the 6 year old obviously understood the rules and played well, as did his grandmother. The concept of the game is very simple, playing the game competitively-not so simple, but lots of fun. I ordered the game that evening and have since introduced the game to others and played it quite a few times. The more I play it, the more I enjoy it. I would recommend it for people of all ages, as long as the players recognize and are able to distinguish differences between shapes and colors. In my opinion, the ability to share the game across generations is one of its best features.

5Great brain activity! by M. R. A Bohm

I can totally see why this game was endorsed by Mensa. I bought this for my 5-year old's birthday and we just opened the box. The pieces are very nicely made, and feel high quality. It took some time teaching my son how to play the game, but he eventually picked up the basics. While it is a simple concept, there are definitely strategies that can be enacted to make this game more complicated and technical than it looks. For this reason, I believe that it would be enjoyable for a range of ages, from 5 to 100+.

5Great game of skill and luck by Craig H. Campbell "E

After playing this game at my brother's, we had to have it. As it wasn't available in stores, we had to buy it on line. The service was perfect and the game arrived earlier than expected.

5Well balanced, not frustrating by K. Durivage

I played this up at the family cabin...I usually don't like games 2 beers into the evening because I don't like thinking or feeling like an idiot who doesn't like to think, but this one is a very good blend of it makes you think just the right amount. I didn't win but I beat my boyfriend who hadn't had any beer, so it's a win in my book. Games last a good length and even if you end up getting beat badly you can blame it on bad luck :)

5Like dominoes...but more challenging! by lisakp71

This game is really fun - deceptively simple, but very challenging.

It's got a similar setup to dominoes, but with the added facet of shape, and being able to line things up differently.

Easy enough for the younger members of the family to grasp the concept right away, but challenging enough that the grownups are just as engaged. In fact, my 7-year-old quite regularly spanks the rest of us at this game! I will beat that kid someday, I swear...

Addicting, fun, and gives your brain a workout. Win!

5A great game for adults too! by RuRu

My husband and I got rid of our TV recently since I'm in grad school and he works on other projects. We have a very peaceful living room and lots of books, but we wanted an interactive game that we would both like. This game is perfect. The instructions are well illustrated and we find that it's just as fun not keeping track of the points. We've played this game together several times, it's also great for teenages and it's intellectually stimulating. The product is well designed, and sturdy. Basically, you build rows of colors or shapes (without repeats). The difficulty of the game depends on the players since you can choose to "branch out" a lot or a little. The larger the branching, the easier it is to add more tiles. I rarely ever enjoy games this much and I would recommend it for all ages. This is a great game for adults and teens!

5Fun Game! by M. Hill

This is a fun family game! Everyone that has tried it seems to like it a lot. It isn't hard to play or hard to learn. The wooden tile pieces feel like they are quality made and they look very pretty all laid out while playing. It is nice to have a bag to pass the tiles around in rather than having to spend a lot of time turning the pieces face down in the bone pile before each game.
My 6 year old is still too young for this, but my 10 year old loves it. My teens also enjoy the game when we all play. There is definitely a bit of luck needed when it comes to drawing the tiles, but it also takes skill and strategy to decide where to place each tile to benefit you the most in the long fun.
I send this game to my inlaws directly from Amazon too. They say they really enjoy playing it with their grandchildren when they visit. They've also played this with a few other people who then wanted to know where they could buy this game themselves. I know I've sent some business your way Amazon, but stumbling upon this game.

5Fun Game by Michael Burgess

Great quick game. Something you can play in about 30 minutes. A little luck, and a little strategy. Fun for a lazy Sunday afternoon with the kids.
