ALPHIE!!!!!!!!!!!!! (29.99 at toysrus) by A Regular Joe
If you grew up in the 1980's you probably remember Alphie - that fun loving robot that taught you all about colors, letters, numbers, math, and more. He is back - and better than ever with a new upgrade, this time sporting a much better animated face instead of the plastic face we all remember. My three year old son has been playing with Alphie for the last week and he loves him. He has an electronic voice that is a lot of fun and not at all as annoying as I imagined it might be. My son got mad at me a few times for "taking over".
He seems well built and sturdy, but I will update my review if that changes.

Some of the cards in the starter pack include:
-- Quick Start Guide
-- Matching
-- ABC Song
-- Music Composition (neat card! Keep adding instruments for new sound combinations!)
-- Counting Song
-- Color Exploration
-- Letters
-- Numbers
-- Shapes
There is also a "Hide and Seek" mode. Just push the button on top of Alphie's head and he asks you to find a card with a description. For instance, find a card that has pink on it.
New booster packs are available on amazon with at least 2 more slatted for release according to in the information in the box.
The cards are stored on his back when not in use. My only complaint and recommendation is for some type of clear plastic that the card could slide into on the front instead of just sitting loose in the small slot on the bottom. The plastic card tends to 'lean forward' and I am afraid could become badly damaged with regular use by small children.
Highly recommended!!!
Horrible Customer Service! by kcraig80
My daughter received an Alphie for Christmas and it completely quit working within a week! It would not ready any booster cards, even an pack extra that we had bought. I called Hasbro and was told they were getting this complaint a lot and were working to improve it. The nice gentleman I spoke to on the phone emailed me a return address lable so I could return Alphie. It has been a month since I sent Alphie back, and we are still waiting. I called last week and was told to call back this week. After talking to a customer service rep today, I requested to talk to a manager. I was informed by the manager that it is going to take at least another 1-3 weeks, on top of the 4 that we've already waited, before we receive a new Alphie. I told the manager this was the worst customer service I had ever received from any company, and that I am extremely unhappy with their company. I do not plan on buying any more toys from Hasbro and I plan on spreading the word to everyone else. HASBRO CUSTOMER SERVICE IS HORRIBLE!!!!
My 3 Y.O. Niece Loves Her Alphie! by Spewey "Spewey"
I just bought Alphie for for my niece as a 3rd birthday present. My main concern was that it was a little too advanced for someone her age, but she loves Alphie, carrying him with her everywhere, telling people how he can talk, and how she talks back to him. She's not quite able to focus on the teaching aspect, but is just at that age when she's starting to. Right now it's mostly osmosis learning for her: she puts a card in the slot and hears the images, words and numbers pronounced. It's pretty perfect for kids between 3 and 5, I'd say. So I think Alphie will be a handy friend over the next year or two as my niece starts to grasp the Socratic method of learning :)
Alphie is everything I'd hope he would be--Very clear audio, durable, encouraging when she gets answers wrong, and exciting when she gets them right. He's also easy to clean (as are the cards), and pretty cute too.
Alphie is just a really well-designed toy. Highly recommended by this uncle!
great teacher n play buddy by candy62
my son is developmentally 3-4 yrs old, even though he is 26, n alfie is teaching him colors, numbers, shapes, the alphabet n he even plays music. my son is learning so much with alfie. i love it, because alfie is using game play to learn. its a wonderful learning tool!
Great fun while it lasted by Mommy who dislikes e
After 3 months of fun, my four year old is broken hearted that Alphie suddenly stopped reading any of the cards (the original ones or from the two booster packs we have), even after changing batteries. The cards are not damaged, she is very careful with them (even for a four year old!). We expected this toy to last a lot longer than 3 months! I am emailing Hasbro for a solution or replacement toy.
I brought this toy for my grandson for christmas and it did not work, I am not sure why it turned on but when we tried to insert the cards it would not work, Alfie kept saying this does not compute, we tried turning it off and on as per instructions, but to no avail.
My son's BEST FRIEND by Stephanie
My son got his Christmas 2010 when he was 2 1/2. He had seen it at the store and always loved it so I asked the grandparents to get him that for Christmas and they did. His initial reaction was pure excitment and he exclaimed "ALPHIE!!!!" (he is speech delayed and we loved that he recognized the toy and remembered the name.)
For while Alphie was something special we did before bedtime- he already had a great understanding of his ABCs and could count to 12 but Alphie really firmed up his letter regcognition and got him couting even higher. (now at almost 31/2 he counts past 50).
Anyway...eventually we let him play with Alphie alone and he really enjoyed this although we had to remind him to be gentle with the cards and to not bend them. He also was a little rough on Alphie a few times, but we took him away when he was. He also had a few minor falls off the ottoman...and then one day he stopped recognizing cards and no longer could be played with...this was only after about 6 months.
I contacted Hasbro- we tried new cards first and when that didnt work they told us they'd send us a new Alphie free of charge. We waited for 2 months until one day there he was at our door. My son was thrilled!!!! Until we found this Alphie did not work either. Sadly my son said "bye bye Alphie" as I packed him back up to go back. This time I was told they had plenty in stock and I should get a new one as soon as that one was sent back. Well 3 weeks later still no Alphie...and he was out of stock again and mine still hadnt been received back BUT they put in my order anyway and just last week we finally got him. My son recognized the shipping box and got really excited saying "Alphie" over and over. this one worked and he's been a happy little boy playing with Alphie for hours at a time for the past week. He's got his best friend and favorite toy back.
In part I bought this because it was a toy I had it as a kid and I was not disappointed in quality or function. It was a gift for my son 2+ to help continue learning shapes and colors. Overall, it does a good job of keeping his attention.
Give it all 5 stars This is a great toys for the kids by Happy Kids Equals Ha
I saw Alphie on Tv one time with the kids and I thought it would be a great toy so I got on here and read the customers reviews and knew it was the right toy for my two kids who are 3 and 4. I order this toy on the 6th and the item arrive here on the 11th with standard shipping. The girls have been playing with Alphie for 3 hours now and still going. Even my older son is helping them and he is enjoying it. I started off playing with them and realize I was having just as much fun watching the girls get things right then they was happy playing with it. I love everything about the toy and they toy is very educational for the kids. The only problem I see with the toy is the card hold could have been made to where it holds the cards but that can be fix by putting them in a index card holder and they can get them out when they need to. But other than that the toy is a 5 star plus and the best purchase I could have gotten the girls. I will give a update soon to see if it still going. Hopefully I will write back with even more great news. Also the package was packed nice and tight. The box fit great the item did not have room to move so I was really impressed with it. Overall I am happy with the price, the item, the shipment time and the way it was package. All it it was perfect. I look forward to my next purchase with Amazon.
I would have given this a 5 star overall, but it gets 4 because of the flimsy paper cards that it uses. It is an EXCELLENT educational toy for children. The batteries last for a long time also. The only downfall is the paper cards. I do not recommend if you have kids that like to put things in their mouths.
I bought this for my 3.75 year old, and he is a little advanced for Alphie, although he enjoys playing with him, he knows most of the answers. We bought one for my 3 year old niece and it was perfect for her. Conclusion - it's great for 3 year olds.
Note to manufacturers: it would be relatively easy to make up some more advanced cards to challenge older kids.
My son is 2 1/2 and completely obsessed with anything robot related. I decided it was time to get him a robot of his own. Alphie is his first robot and I felt good about getting him one that was educational as well as a toy. Even though the age limit indicates that Alphie is appropriate for ages 3 and up, my son is able to play with him with some assistance. I had to go over the fact that one card goes in Alphie's tummy at a time and the rest of the cards stay in his back.
If you have a toddler who likes robots, Alphie is a great toy. There are some cards that are a bit more sophisticated in terms of learning, but you can determine which are age-appropriate for your child quite easily.
get gift for my nephew! by C. Smith
At first he (my 2 1/2 yo nephew) was a bit scared of Alphie but eventually he was carrying it around his grandmom's house and repeating words from Alphie's games! Super cute toy!
Disappointed Alphie Fan... by inkedmama
I had an original Alphie as a kid, and *loved* it, so naturally I was super excited to see a new version that I could introduce my kids to. Although I think this Alphie is still fun and educational, the card quality is comparable to adult playing cards and are not very durable. One of my sons is almost 3 and accidentally bent 2 cards the first time he played with Alphie.
There also seems to be a flaw with some of the cards or the reader itself. Out of all the cards it comes with, Alphie cannot read 14 out of 60 of our activities (tried repeatedly) and two other cards respond with information that does not correspond to the card that is in. 26 of the cards are letters of the alphabet (luckily all of our letters read)...which left us with just 20 shape, color, number, or animal activities for the kids to do.
I will be contacting the company to see what they have to say about this situation, but the kids still love him. Even if we can't resolve the situation, at least there are booster packs available that *hopefully* work properly.
great buy!!! by Essence C. Walker
I am glad I bought this toy. My 3 yr old twin boys love. They are fascinated that the robot "talks" to them. It counts to twenty, has matching, sings the abc's and does letter recognition.
Fun and educational toy by Deyna79
I got this toy as a Christmas present for my two nephews who are 3 and 5. My brother had an older version when he was a kid and I remembered how much we liked it. My nephews both love it and get to learn in the process of playing.
Almost 3 year old daughter loves this toy by Genifer Gage
My daughter played with her new Alphie more than any other toy she received on Christmas. The cards are more basic on one side- at a 2 or 3 year old level. The other side is more advanced. Only worry is the cards are easily bent.
I had bought this toy for my 3yr old for Christmas. Tried to use it, but it wont read any of the cards. Just repeats his phrases of, Hello my name is alphie blah blah.. changed the batteries, same phrases were said, still wouldnt read the cards. Turned it off and then back on again as the 'trouble shooting' guide suggested.
Over all, this was an entire waste of money. Aparently I got the factory reject. Needless to say I am taking this back for a refund, will not attempt to buy again, thats for sure..
Alphie! A hit in my house! by dlerium81
One thing not mentioned is that the cards are smaller at the bottom than the top so when your child decides to play 52 card pickup in the living room with them you can just stack them up and by grabbing the sides and pulling apart they separate perfectly into two piles you can flip over to combine and tuck back into Alphie's back!
EXCELLENT LEARNING TOOL by Jon Davis
my 3 year LOVES Alphie and is very careful with the Alphie cards. He's been playing it since we received it in the mail and does not want to put it down. The toy is unlike any other toy. It is interactive and has tons of fun educational games to play. I really like that it teaches Kindergarten/First Grade skills. I recommend this toy for ages 3 to 6 years old to help your child get a step ahead in school.
The Worst Quality Control I Have Ever Seen by Always Reading "Debo
This product came with a card pack of which only three - yes only three were useable both front and back. The others had answers to other items not even related to that card or said "does not compute". I bought another pack of cards and had even worse result with only one - yes 1 card that worked out of the food card pack. This is unconscionably the poorest and worst quality control on a product I have ever seen. I should have heeded the warnings on Amazon.
My son (3) likes this toy, he received it as a gift last year. It is educational & fun. I would recommend supervising little kids (2-3) with this toy b/c mine has peeled some of the cards in half and bent some others. They need to be kept flat in order for the bar code thing at the bottom to read what card it is. For me, it can be a little loud even on the lower setting. anyways, it's a good toy overall, worth the cost I'd say.
Great "learning buddy" by alicevangeline
We gave our son an Alphie for his third birthday a year ago - there were a few months where we didn't play with him, but even when Alphie is turned off, he is my son's favorite toy that he takes EVERYWHERE. It stopped recognizing cards - it might be the cards, but I'm worried it's Alphie's reader. So durability gets a lower star rating.
We've used the letter pack, and I really do think it's helping my son recognize letters and words.
We got just about a year out of Alphie by T. Lewison
My three year old son really loved Alphie and so did his 5 year old sister. As far as I could tell, they were quite gentle with him but after about 11 months he stopped working. We aren't getting the "does not compute" issue, he just simply doesn't do anything. When he is turned on he lights but, but then doesn't say or do anything and doesn't respond to pushing buttons or inserting cards. We thought it might be a battery issue, but new batteries confirmed it was Alphie himself. From the reviews below, sounds like we were lucky to even get 11 good months from him. I came here to possibly replace Alphie, my son was pretty bummed that Alphie crapped out on him, but after reading the other reviews I'll probably pass. Sounds to unreliable.
Got this for my son as a gift. Worked well for about a month. Now it wont read the cards. very unfortunate because i really wanted to keep this for a long time but now its just played as a figurine(alien robot). Was teaching my son matching and pressing correct buttons left or right. Sings abc and counts to 20. Multiple options. I am afraid to buy again though.
We LOVE Alphie! by Andre T. Bradshaw "A
Playskool did an excellent job designing the Alphie learning robot. The cards do not have to be "forced" into the slot in the front - they just glide right in. This is definitely a must-have feature due to the age of children that play with it. We've had Alphie since May of 2011, and here are a few of the observations that I've made so far:
*He has excellent battery life. We have yet to change the batteries, and my daughter plays with him quite often.
*The volume control switch on the bottom is very necessary - sometimes Alphie can get annoying (hearing a robot speak continuously will annoy you a bit). The volume switch helps the parent to block him out.
*There are so many different activities and things to learn that my daughter has yet to master any one card.
*Sometimes Alphie can be a bit impatient. Some things take longer for my daughter to figure out (or focus on) than what Alphie is programmed to handle. In these instances, he will repeat the question, the lights will blink, and sometimes, he'll move on just as my daughter is ready to answer.
*The handle on top of Alphie's head makes him very portable and the extra cards all store in his back. The only improvement I would make is to include a lid to cover the tops of the spare cards so that they don't spill out if Alphie gets tipped over.
Overall, this is a very fun and educational toy. He is well worth the price. I haven't needed to purchase the additional card sets (just yet) because as I mentioned, there's plenty of things to learn from the included cards.
Amazed with this toy by Kaytee Wilder
It is difficult to surprise anybody with anything nowadays, so it means something when I say that this toy is unbelievable. Looks like a lot of thought went into its design. Won't repeat what the other reviewers say, but it is a lot of fun and activities for a 3-year old.
Not sure whether I will buy the booster cards though. Though my daughter plays with it a lot, I am myself getting tired of the robot voice :)
Doesn't read the cards by J. Eckert
Looks like a great, fun & educational toy - but the only card my Alphie recognizes is the ABC song card! When you insert other cards, it asks questions that like - find the item that is red. Well the card has a letter R, a ring, and a rocket on it; none of which are red!!!
Just ok! by Angelsgot5 "Angelsgo
The "Easter Bunny" put this in our 3 3/4 yr old boys basket this year and at first he played with it allot but he has not touched it in months! I am thinking maybe he needs to get a bit older to understand the concept of the cards more Idk.....I guess by that time... waste of money?....
More fun than I anticipated by Carolyn from NYC "ca
I have a memory of this toy--not sure if it was MY childhood or during my babysitting years or even my neices, but I know its the 2nd time around.
My 4yo saw a commercial, then saw it in TRU and asked for it. It was 'on-sale' at TRU for about $55, more than I wanted to spend. I looked it up on my phone while still in the store and found it on Amazon for $30 and actually ordered it while still standing next to the display in TRU.
I'm not a big fan of so called 'educational' toys (think kids learn more from blocks than from these kind of things) but most of my little one's toys are his older brother's hand-me-downs so generally when he asks for something (not that often) i get it.
I was actually pleasantly surprised. He has a fun with this and goes to it often. He can use it by himself (about a 60 second learning curve). I guess it probably is educational in that he was picking up on which letters, etc, but as I mentioned above, that's not a priority for me.
He doesn't play with it for long periods, probably about 15-20 minutes, but so far has played with it every day since it arrived.
Based on that I'm giving it a 4-star.
