Cute toolbox, but it could use some changes by Eric and Katie's Mom
I bought this for my 2 year old Bob the Builder fan. It is difficult to use the toolbox to hammer into, but if you turn it on it's side your builder can hammer all day long. It's a little tight at first, but after you hammer a couple of nails and pull them out it gets easier. I like this toolbox because its a little more difficult for little hands. My son has to really think about hitting the nails and turning the wrench and screwdriver, but he can do it. This set looks real and my son loves that. If he sees his daddy using tools he will go get his tools so he can help. Some kids might get frustrated with it, but I think that it's teaching fine motor skills.
We love it
Build Fine-Motor Skills with a favorite toy! by Mo Vaughn
Besides being one of my son's favorite toys, I feel great about him playing with it all the time because he is building on his fine motor skills. Also, it is adorable to watch him follow his father around the house when his father fixes things. Cleap up is made easy by the tool box that comes with it - and this toy is holding up unbelivablly well considering how quickly my son's toys normally break!
My son LOVES most construction toys and barely touches this one. While there are "nails" and "washers and screws", they are awkward to use on the toolkit - mainly for lack of space. Very cute, though, just not terribly practical.
DON'T BUY - incompatible with other wooden sets from the same manufacturer by Ion Halalay "Ion"
Don't bother to buy this, if you think of providing your kid(s) with an extended wooden construction kit by adding pieces from various "Melissa & Doug" wooden construction sets together, as the various sets are INCOMPATIBLE (screw threads and lengths, plate thickness, etc). A true disappointment. The whole series is poorly conceived, with no thought given to compatibility between - and therefore expansion of - sets. Worse yet, quality is poor: threads on screws tend to chip or erode very easily during use, leaving saw dust all over the play area. The number of pieces is too limited to allow for more than the construction of two or three toys, and one must disassemble an existing construction before building a new one.
Dangerous and Difficult Toy by S. Morgan "morganwif
Although it is a neat concept, we don't let our son(s) play with this anymore (and haven't since a week after we purchased it). The screwdriver is a hard, sharp wooden tool that could really be dangerous if he slips or falls on it. Also, we hammered in one of the "nails" and even my husband couldn't get it back out again. There are lots of other "tool kits" out on the market and for safety's sake, I would suggest choosing something else.
Big Disappointment! by Grandson Crazy
I bought this for my grandson when he was about 2 1/2. I has been a total disappointment, even at age 3.
Nails & hammer: At first, he really enjoyed hammering in the 2 nails into the holes in the side of the toolbox. But an strong adult needs to pull the nails out. I can't do it. He really hammers hard!
Hammering the nails is the only part of the toy that he liked, but he lost interest. Even at 3 yr. - I can't get him to play with it.
Screws, washers, screwdriver & wrench:
The holes in the side of the toolbox are TOO BIG for the screws. The 6 screws are over 2" long and there are washers that can be screwed on. However, it is so much easier to use your fingers to fasten the washers, so the screwdriver isn't needed. And it is useless to try to use the wrench to unfasten them.
*** A toddler cannot use the screwdriver while holding the washer in place all by himself. He doesn't have enough hands.
I called Melissa & Doug, thinking I wasn't teaching him how to use the toy correctly. The rep. said we should connect the brackets with the screws to make interesting designs or - I'm not sure what. But I did try to show him. No Fun!
Captivating but potentially dangerous by Jirka "Two Little Ch
My son received this toy for Christmas and he has found it captivating. The screws have a place on the side of the toy for him to screw them into. The hammer he uses with another workbench toy but also has lots of fun with it. I can see how the screw driver could be a hazard if the child was running and fell on it. It would easily pierce the skin. He only plays with this around his work bench were he is supervised. If you are watching your child play it would be a safe toy. I would only purchase it if you are willing to watch your child during play time.
i bought this for my son who is a month shy of 2 & enjoys bob the builder & my tools. even though he is not the recommened age, i thought he might begin investigating it & trying it out if it was around. the more he plays with it, the better he gets at learning to use the tools. he has loads of fun with daddy (or me) while they screw together the plates & hammer in the pegs. my son is thrilled that he has his own tools, so he now leaves mine alone. this is a wooden toy that will swell or shrink with humidity, so there are some days getting the pegs out is just a bit stickier. but in general we have no problem with them. a simple pull & twist or using the claw on the hammer works. because we play with him with this toy, he is supervised, but i can see how a child might get injured. my son goes from toy to toy every 10-15 mins, so i don't expect him to be captivated by anything, but he does play with this a bit longer than others. it challenges him to experiment & is a great toy for us to use to play with him. he watches what we do & then tries to mimic us. he has learned on his own that he can put the screws into the holes, which are slightly larger than the screws, then use the screwdriver to turn them. i like it for it's old time toolkit design & because all the pieces fit inside. keep in mind the child's personality, temperment, type of play - supervised vs. unsupervised - & the likes of the child. my son, for the moment, enjoys this toolkit. when he's a little older that may change. i'll find out. i have bought a few toys i was certain he'd love, but hasn't touched since they day i brought them home, but this one's a keeper.
I bought 2 of this for 2 3-yr-olds at my son's daycare. They happened to be Bob the Builder fans and really loved this toolset!
Actually I gave this toy as a gift, but it looked like a great hit with the 4-year-old boy I gave it to. Not only did the boy like it, but so did some of the older kids as well. I think this toy is great for the imagination and I liked the tool box carrying case the blocks came in. The case is good to keep the blocks together and to play with as well.
Chemical smell...WASTE of money! by KCB
So reading peoples reviews about the "chemical paint smell" I thought some may be exaggerating about the strong odor....BUT NO they are not! I just wasted my money because I will not let my 1.5 year old boy play with this. The smell is so strong it kinda made me sick after sniffing a a few of the tools. My 5 year old son even said "Mommy, that hammer smells funny!."
I washed the hammer and the tool box and only gave those items to my son...but I think I will actually call it a loss and throw them out.
DO NOT waste your money...find a "green" product. I have found "Green Toys" here on Amazon and will try and only buy their product, though items are limited...but great selection of fake food.
some of the things will be easy when the child first gets this and they will learn to do more with it as they develope hand strength and play with it. Goes great with the pound a peg bench. This toy should last and be a hit. Bought for 18 month boy and he busies himself with it often.
Not the best tool box at all... by JJC
This tool box has way too many 'pieces' and not enough tools. And the tools are not very realistic either (more of a mallet than a hammer). The wood has splintered and the paint is chipping off too. The screws are untouchable, and we have had to throw a lot of them away because the splinters are so bad after having been threaded a few times in the holes. Not at all impressed with this tool kit. The Green Toys tool box is leaps and bounds better than this one. Not only is it made from recycled material with no chemicals, but the tools look and work like real tools. We have had both tool boxes for over a year, and my son uses the Green Toys one nearly every day, but barely touches this Melissa & Doug one.
The kids really like it... by Chickie
It's very well crafted and both of my kids love it. It's a challenge for both children (1 and 3). I didn't want a full sized tool bench, so I loved that the carrier is more than just a basic functional carrier/tool box. It's sturdy enough to handle hard play, but light enough that even the younger one can carry it around with very little problem.
My son who is almost three really enjoys tinkering around with this toll set. Every part has been hammered or screwed repeatedly, the paint has not chipped and there are no broken pieces.
Great toy by Kimberly D. Eberl "K
This is a great toy. My grandson loves playing with this because he likes banging on things. He is really a rough playing kid and hasnt torn it up yet. He loves trying to hammer in the pieces. Great toy and will last awhile.
Great Tool Kit for your little one by Julie A. Gaskins
My little loves this tool kit. He finds creative ways to build everything from houses to airplanes. This is a great toy for your little one and it encourages creativity and motor skills.
Toolbox for carrying things by Amzn byer "Amazon Lo
My three-year old son loves the tools and the toolbox. The nuts and washers and bolts are only used part of the time. But he can tote around other things in the toolbox and the wood is very smooth and durable. We've had it for about six months and it still looks new. He plays with it every day and he is not a gentle kid on his toys.
Small wooden tool set.. durable but not helpful! by Strong Soul "Sam"
After reading tons of reviews, I chose this item as it is durable, wood, well constructed. Of course, like many other buyers, I did not realize how small it would be! it is so little! may be for the little hands it is okay. but it seemed so tiny for me, when I saw the box! My son is just loading his tools and carrying the box around the house. He just did not play well (as it is too early to say now in one day!), But he said he loves that. he was the one who was asking for a tools box. a bench kind of box could have been better for working, but they are all more expensive or cheap plastic. it looks cute and rich! one discomfort with this toy is, ones he hammered, it would be hard for him to take it out by himself. and finally he does not show any interest in it, as the activity he can do is too few..
Do You Have a Lil Handy Manny In Your House? This Toy is For You! by Melanie Marshall "Ev
I bought this toy for my 3 yr old son and he loves it. He especially loves it when he is watching Handy Manny. If my husband is fixing something in the house then my son runs to get "his tools" and helps him out. I think this is a great educational toy for any toddler boy. Introduces a hammer, screw and wrench. Well made quality product.
A nice break from batteries and flashing lights by James Doughty "night
Not a whole lot to say except that what you see is what you get. It's well put together, which I've found is always the case with this brand. My daughter is on the young side of the age range for this product, so I've been controlling her access to the toy screwdriver -- a little pointy -- but that's not a flaw in the product by any means.
Wooden tool box by Susan Hutchinson
Durable and realistic with lots of tools and places on the tool box to use them. Self contained, colorful and great for hand eye coordination.
Take-Along Tools are the best! by G. Schultz
My grandson is only 9 months old and already loves anything to do with tools. At this age, he can only play with his tools while under supervision, but already these are his favorites! The tools are very well made and durable, and we expect him to have these for years to come.
just a few complaints but overall pretty decent by Rhonda Mankin
This is a fun little kit and the only complaint I would have is handle placement. It is sometimes hard to get pegs out once they have been hammered in. The paint finish could be better as paint seems to chip off easily. The price should have been a bit lower for the quality.
My daughter got this when she was one, and loves it, she is now 2 and is still in great shape, she loves copying her dad fix things.
Not the same quality as other Melissa and Doug Toys by cj
Although we usually really like Melissa & Doug toys, this one was simply not up to par. The heads of most of the bolts and "nails" (i.e. pegs) had split within the first few weeks of normal toddler play. It's a good concept, but the wood is not tough enough for what it's designed to accomplish.
Very Disappointed by Marion Quartararo
I bought this for my 2 grandsons, ages 3 & 6. They love to watch their Grandpa using tools and I thought this would be perfect for them. There are only two pegs to hammer. Some holes are too tight for the pegs to fit into and other holes are too big and the peg slips right through! There is absolutely no use for the screwdriver at all. You must use your hands to screw the bolt onto the head of the screwdriver. This toy is more for sorting colors & shapes. I was very disappointed at this Melissa & Doug product. It's purpose is not to use tools at all, so I don't know why it's called a tool box! My grandsons spent about 5 minutes with it and then walked away. I didn't blame them!!
My 15 month old son loves to hammer on this toy. I wish that it would have come with more nails instead of screws because the screws don't really do much (they're mostly just scattered around the house for me to step on). Otherwise, the product seems very durable and is a great toy to take along to Grandma & Grandpa's house!
Great Toy!!! by Meghan A. Maloy "Meg
This was a great toy for my tool loving nephew! He loves it and plays with it all the time while daddy works too!
Not bad for Melissa & Doug by Jennifer Arrow
Generally speaking, I find M&D toys to be cheap and overrated, but I really enjoy playing with this one with my 16-month-old son. We got it as a gift, and so far he enjoys banging the hammer on the nails, playing with the screws and nuts, and dropping the screws through the holds on the side. I enjoy the ways I can use this toy to introduce, colors, numbers, same/different, in/out and so forth. I don't take it seriously as a miniature working set of tools, but as a bunch of interestingly shaped wooden pieces that my son can use imaginatively, it's not half-bad.
That said, as per usual with M&D, the "craftsmanship" is shoddy, the materials are poor and I know it won't be a lasting toy, but what are you gonna do?
Melissa and Doug Wooden Take Along Tool Kit by tootsie
I bought one of these tool box sets while in Florida on vacation. We needed more tool boxes when my husband built tool benches for our little grandchildren and they love them. He couldn't possibly make his own wooden tools and tool box for the price. We absolutely love this product.
Worth so much more than the price! by Senor Esposito "LoLo
I got this for my 18 month old son. The minute I opened it him and his 3 year old sister were fighting over it. I was surprised at how many things are in this. Melissa and Doug products are normally so expensive, I wasn't expecting too much. This came with a wrench, hammer, screwdriver, screws, nuts and bolts. The pieces are large enough that they can't be swallowed by a little one.
My 18 month old can only hammer in the nails and screw in the bolts. He can't quite use the screwdriver, however he loves holding on to it and pretend he's fixing things around the house. The hammer is his favorite.
My 36 month old girls has mastered all the tools and loves to sit and play with this set for 30 minutes or more at a time.
I love the fact that everything conveniently fits inside the toolbox, so it's easy to clean up and the kids can take it along wherever they go.
The box also comes with educational extension activities, which include learning colors. Love it!
Bought as a Gift by lurkinturtle
I got this for my nephew and he loves it! This set completed his M&D tool set work bench and all.
My daughter's favorite toy is the tool box in the mommy and me class. I thought this one would compare to it, but it fell short. There are no holes on the bottom and the box is a bit thin. It's just ok.
My 2 year old grandson and 3 year old granddaughter loves it! by G. Tyacke "gtyacke"
They actually play together with this, which in itself is really cool.
But this has the screwdriver and wrench, so it's not just a bench to hammer, it's truly interactive
Love Melissad & Doug! by Becky
We love Melissa & Doug toys! So we just had to add this tool kit to our collection and it has been in great use! My daughter loves hammering and screwing the washer onto the bolts! Hours of fun for her!
Badly designed and executed by Paul Pomerleau
I like all the other Melissa and Doug toys we've gotten. This one isn't good. Don't buy it. The screws are too long, and screwing them down is boring. The screwdriver doesn't fit into the screw slots well and just causes frustration. The "nails" (pegs, really) slide easily into and out of any hole, making the hammer superfluous and the pegs useless.
I'm not sure whether to take out the pegs and hammer and just throw those away -- they only serve to confuse.
M&D products are generally better than this. Perhaps they'll fix the design. Until that happens, don't buy it.
Poor design by bostoncharlotte
I wanted a simple tool kit for my two year old to learn basic coordination. This seemed to fit the bill and at a good price. However, none of the tools really fit with the pieces. The hammer only works with the tool box on the side, and the back 'tail' of the hammer that's supposed to pull out nails is way too small for the nails to work at all. The screwdriver shaft is too narrow for the screw head - it turns but slips easily and would work much better if the thickness were closer to the size of the screw head. The wrench doesn't actually fit the screws either - way too loose. Also, the screws only work with the washers, so the child would need to put his/her hand behind the toy while using the driver/wrench with the other to actually tighten a screw - very awkward, especially for a toddler. Finally, while there are three different length screws, they are all way too long for the tightness of the 'grooves,' so to tighten a screw with the washer takes at least like 20 turns for even the shortest screw, something I don't see a toddler having patience for.
This might seem a detailed critique of a simple toy, but I don't understand the design flaws when simple changes would actually make the toy functional. This product might be useful for teaching colors and length, but I don't think it's worth even the low price as a construction tool [apologies for not knowing the proper tool terminology].
Cute, but difficult by OnlyGabe
This is a cute set, but difficult for my toddler to use. The heads on the screws also don't stay together very well.
Aspiring carpenter really loves this tool kit by Andrew J. Whealy
My son is three and he's a devoted tinkerer. The Melissa and Doug tool kit thrills his soul. He "repairs" stuff all around the kitchen while I cook. The pieces are great quality, the right size for his level of manual dexterity, and you get a lot of variety in the kit (nuts and bolts, stuff to hammer, stuff to screw, etc.). I like the tool box because I love any toy that comes with it's own container. Makes pick-up time simple. In a world overrun with plastic and battery-operated toys, it makes me feel happy to see my kiddo preferring wood ones.
