5THESE CONTAIN LEAD in the Magnets! by L. Talcott-Travis

I thought these were SO COOL, then I had them tested at a local free lead testing for kids toys and they came back POSITIVE. Further research at Healthytoys dot org showed that the magnets contain a MEDIUM level of LEAD!!!. If you child is extra careful not to touch the magnet parts then I guess these are fine, but if your child is like mine and likes to touch the entire thing and then put his fingers in his mouth, these are too dangerous.

Healthytoys dot org lists lots of toys as both safe and unsafe, according to brand. It's good to be careful these days.

5These letters/numbers are the BEST for your money!! by Mrs. K "From the wil

Yes, they're a little more pricey than what you can buy at Walmart, but they're worth it. They've stood up to my 16-month old chewing on them. And best of all, no worries about a little magnet coming off the back and being aspirated or swallowed because the entire back is magnet. They hold on great. So, redecorate your fridge, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer with these great ABC/123 magnets.

Update -- The paper starts peeling off when your kid dunks them in the dog's water bowl. I don't think the manufacturer should be faulted for that. I still think they're great. We bought a second set because daughter has learned about the trash can and several letters were missing.

5Not Typical Melissa & Doug Quality by Tearianna

I have purchased many Melissa & Doug toys, because I feel quality and safety is worth the higher price tag. But I was not pleased with the magnets. All of their other wooden toys are painted, so I expected the letters to also be painted. They aren't. Instead, it is a paper lining over the letter, which easily came off into my sons mouth moments after opening the package. My friend purchased cheap plastic letters at a local store, and is much happier with hers. I wish I had done the same. For now, they are packed up until my son gets over his sucking on everything phase.

If your child likes to put toys in their mouth, these letters won't hold up to the drool.

5Better than the plastic ones... by J. Hardin "Amazon sh

I like this set because it's a reasonable price considering the quality which is quite good...I would definitely choose these letter over the cheap plastic ones because the backs are a complete magnet which makes them hold on without drifting down...The colors are satisfactory...The coloring scheme is simply an alternation of red, yellow, blue, and green....You may want to refrain from giving these to a child who is still put things in their mouth because the paper fronts will dissolve and come off...

BTW...There's a set available with letters & numbers together.

5Warning! by Steven P. Savett

We bought these letters for our 2 year old grandson. As he played, he put one of the letters in his mouth. To our surprise and horror, the letter started to disintegrate! We took it away from him, and gave him a set of plastic letters we had, which do not disintegrate when munched on by a teething child.

5Great magnetic letters by Amber Sawyer

As an educator (of k, 1, & 2) I've played with all types of magnetic letters.

I have the plastic "refrigerator" ones. They are small, the font is kind of weird for children that are learning their letters, and the magnets on them aren't always the greatest.
I have ones that are square magnets with a paper letter "sticker" on it. They are easily bent and hard for little ones hands to pick up.
I have the leap frog ones that go in their toys. They are pretty good, but their shape is meant for their "word whammer" and "fridge phonics" toys (which are also great toys).

These letters are larger than the plastic ones, are made of wood (that is smoothed), and the entire back of the letter is magnetic (so it stays in place). These are the only letters that would stick to our wall that was painted with magnetic paint. -- Even the leap frog ones wouldn't stay!

I will say that if your child decides to wash them that the colored paper on the front doesn't like it very much (Even though ours been washed they don't look that bad, and the paper on all of the letters is still intact.) :-)

5Can't spell mama by S. Rhodes

The first thing my daughter wanted to do when we got these was spell "mama" and papa" on the fridge. Can't do it...there seems to be only one upper case A and one lower case a, and mixing the two in a word is definitely confusing. I would have assumed most of the extra letters would be vowels. I also dislike the "font", if you will, because the letters don't always seem clear to me or fully representational (like ones you'd print block style if a child asked you to). I think next time I would go with an upper case only set...when she asks me, "What's this letter?" it's a bummer that I don't know whether to tell her it's an L or an I. I'm going to get a new set, maybe with smaller letters for actually making lots of words...she's almost three and I'm not concerned about the choking hazard issue. Honestly...if choking is an issue, your child is too young for the alphabet anyway.

5Not enough letters to spell any words...and quality is so poor! by Elizabeth M. Callaha

There is 1 of every letter in upper and lower case included. This is barely enough to spell any words, and of course, very few with correct capitalization. So unless you want to invest in many kits to get enough vowels and repetitive consonants to spell a four letter word (and this set will make you want to)...don't buy this.

The quality is horrible. Pressed wood that reeks of formaldehyde with a white paper layer on top and thin color paper (no paint on these).

The magnet layer is thin and is not cut well, leaving many black pieces out of the box to fall all over the place.

The best thing about this is the storage box it comes with, but that isn't worth the price or mess of dealing with the useless letters. Even the plastic letters are of higher quality (and seemingly safer) than these.

5Melissa & Doug Magnetic Alphabet by Caleb

The letters are great - I bought two sets of letters and a set of numbers and my three year old has quickly learned to write her own name and recognise a number of other significant letters. Having two sets was great for words with two of the same ie Butter, See, etc. I can see in the future that she will love creating her own words and sentences. The magnets are fantastic and cover the whole letter so they don't fall off and are very hard to bump off.

5Junk by Betty Boop "betts"

These are the worst items I have ever purchased for my grand daughters. they are wood with colored paper covering the wood. Which comes off almost immediately. What a pile of garbage. Not worth returning. Don't bother purchasing this crap-I'm done with Melissa and Doug children's toys, I haven't been happy with any of their stuff except maybe the pull along Dog. I don't know how they get away with their shoddy products.

5Missing letters by SAP Enthusiast

The toy itself is actually of relatively good quality, just don't get them wet, the colors will start to peel off. I had to return this product twice to Amazon because it was missing letters! I'm not sure who assembles the product, but I'm pretty sure they don't know their ABCs!

5so far, so good... by Heather P.

This set seems well made - though there is only 1 of each letter (upper & lower case), so it does limit your word choices some. LO loves them though!

5Great gift by L. Golff

Gave this gift to my 2 year old grandson for Christmas. He loves it - it's one of the few toys he actually goes back to on a constant basis. In the less than a month since the holiday, he is able to recognize and identify 97% of the alphabet. Very durable. The magnet holds better than the plastic versions. I'm very pleased with this. I may purchase another set so he can begin spelling multiple words without reusing letters.

5Love these magnets! by Mommy2JackTooty

I ordered a set of these and a set of the number magnets for both my son and my nephew. The biggest thing I like about these, compared to the plastic letter/number magnets, is that the magnet covers the whole back of the letter. This allows them to stick much more securely than the kind that have just a small magnet on the back. The letters are about 2 inches tall and 1-2 inches wide, depending on the letter, so they are pretty similar in size to the commonly found plastic letters/numbers. I mention this because in the pictures they look a little bigger than that, but they're not. I'm really satisifed with these magnets and I'm happy that I found them!

5Disappointing durability by Dagger

I got these magnets for my nephew. They were very well received, however after less than 30 minutes, they were showing wear on the colored sides. Granted, they were briefly sucked on, but I am totally disappointed in this product. Kids put things in their mouths, and creating wood magnets that seem to have a sticker front that is susceptible to this kind of wear is ridiculous. When I ordered wood magnets, I expected them to be painted wood with magnetic backs. I was not expecting a sticker front that doesn't last well and doesn't wear well getting wet. If you want good looking magnets and you can keep them dry, then these would work. If you have any children that want to taste objects, don't get these.

5Little guy loves them! by Cristina Blanton

We bought these letters for our 16 month old son and from day one he has really enjoyed playing with them and putting them all over our refrigerator and his art easel. They are durable and stand up to the rough treatment of an active toddler and a curious dog who thought the letter "a" was a doggie treat. :)

5Good if you use it the right way by Isabelle Green

After reading through many of the reviews, I decided to go ahead and buy these as a Christmas present for my 3 year old son to go along with the M&D magnetic letter board/dry erase board (the board only comes with capital letters). It seems that most of the problems the lower star reviewers are having is that the paper comes off if your child chews on the magnets. There was also one 1-star review warning customers of lead in the product. I don't know about the lead, but trust Melissa & Doug enough to let my kids play with them, but only when they're at an age where they're not chewing on their letters. For my son, I let him use Leapfrog products (both the Fridge magnets as well as the Letter Factory DVD in which he learned his alphabet and sounds in 2 weeks) first from age 2-3, but the M&D letters are more for supervised instruction at age 3+ (which is what the M&D packaging recommends anyway). Besides, I think that if you leave them out on the fridge, they WILL get lost or chewed on. I think it's good to keep some toys out of reach and play with them with your child, both to protect the toys as well as emphasize the specialness of that toy, but that's just me.

5Very Nice Set by Lore

Very nice wooden set.
This Wooden set is Much better than the Plastic set we had. A few letters in the Plastic set never stuck on the fridge straight due to magnet placement. Also a few magnets fell out of the plastic letters.
This wooden set arrived with two letters stuck together with glue, a manufacturing defect. I called the company and described the issue. Replacement letters were sent out and arrived in just a few days. A very satisfied customer.

5Not Perfect, but better than the rest. by Kris

I purchased these letters because I love the Melissa & Doug brand. THe magnets on these letters are strong enough to hold up art projects. The magnets make up the entire back of the letter not just a small magnet, that can fall out a pose a choking risk. Don't buy the cheap ones. THe only problem is that I recieved two letters that stuck together, and when I pulled them apart the paper came off of the letters. It was not that big of a deal and I took a marker to color where the paper ripped. I still think they are great learning tool and overall the quality is good.

5So so magnets by Happy Mom "Rose"

These magnets would be best used on a magnetic board or easel. We used them on our refrigerator, and just about every one of them is now under our refrigerator. They are so skinny that they slide right under. I like the Leap frog refrigerator magnets, b/c they are thicker and don't slide under. The lower case letters in this set are very small - I wouldn't recommend using them if your child is still Mouthing objects alot.

5Not as good as I had hoped ... by Mathgirl

I received these a couple of days ago, and frankly am disappointed with the quality. They are ok, but be warned that previous reviews stating that the magnetic letters are painted with a nice shiny enamel appear to now be out of date. Mine appear to be wood with a shiny colored paper adhered to the front. Not awful, but not what I was led to expect. Also, I wish the sizing were more uniform -- some of the lowercase letters (t,f) look like they are a little bit too small compared to the rest. Again not a big deal, but I expected something better from Melissa and Doug. My kids so far love to play with them regardless of these shortcomings. I do like that the full backing of the letters is magnetic so I don't have to worry about little magnets coming loose and being a choking hazard for my little ones.

5Just what I was looking for by Eclectic mom

As my toddler began showing interest in alphabets, i started looking for some magnetic letters with which she could play while i cooked the meals. I initially was going to purchase the fridgephonics ones but the when i heard the letters , I decided the sound was too annoying to be heard everyday and bought these instead. Like any M&D fan, I did not think twice once i saw these. really nice looking, seem sturdy enough ..most important a whole magnet instead of little pieces which can easily come off. The only con though is that they are too easy to be misplaced.. especially when a toddler grabs and runs them around the house..not a real con of the product though. i emaild the customer service and got a very prompt reply that as of yet they do not sell individual letters so i made a couple of alphabets at home to compensate the ones I lost.
Overall a great product which pleases the eye and is wonderful to handle.
