Great idea, not-so-great execution. by goonius
I first saw this toy online, and thought it was a must have for our daughter since she's really getting into puzzles and stacking and things of that sort.
The idea is wonderful - three stackers in one, with varying levels of difficulty. The first two are quite simple, and the third requires a bit more skill and mental energy to piece back together correctly.
So, we bought this for our daughter's first birthday, and it was a hit! Even her noise-making over-stimulating toys were forgotten when she opened this one.
Why only three stars? Well, a couple of things:
First the paint stuck together between the pieces - most significantly on the more difficult stack of the three, and it was quite hard to seperate the pieces. When we finally did seperate them, much of the paint was removed and transfered to the other pieces, and more of the paint chipped off soon after with very little play. Even non-toxic paint I'd prefer she didn't swallow in these quantities. I would have thought this was exclusive to our toy, but a few other reviewers said the same thing.
Second - odd as it may sound - the three prongs sticking up worried me a bit in terms of her falling on them. Since the base is broad, it doesn't overturn as easily as the single stacker. Since she is learning to walk, she does tumble over a good bit. Maybe a needless concern, but worth mentioning.
Ultimately we returned this to the toy store and replaced it with the simple rainbow stacker. I think she's gotten an equal amount of play out of it - and it doesn't seem to carry the problems and hazards of the geometric one.
This one simply needs improvement in construction (let the paint dry before assembling the toy!) and safety (maybe seperate the three parts rather than putting them all on the same base)before I would think of purchasing it again.
dangerous by B. Cruz "Dudeman 500
This is a well made toy but my problem with it is that the holes are small enough to get a little finger stuck inside of them. We had to take our 3 year old to the hospital to have one of the disks removed from his finger- he put it on like a ring. Be prepared to go to the ER- unless you want to risk cutting it off yourself!
This is quite a step up from the basic ring stacker that so many toddlers are fond of! I like the fact that the child can stack the pieces in various orders. They are not confined to ordering the pieces by size. This product should provide months, if not years, of experimenting and learning for my 2-year-old. Valuable for teaching early math concepts.
My only complaint is that close supervision is an absolute must with this toy. The long wooden poles pose a threat in my mind. Falling onto this toy, or waving the base around could result in injury. I will only allow my child to play with this toy in a seated position and only with me close by.
All in all, this is a very educational manipulative with plenty of play potential. Great for learning basic colors, too!
I am highly recommending this toy because the little pieces don't have to go on the pole in a set order. The pole is a dowel and the holes in the rings are all the same size thus the child can get them all on at a much earlier age - doesn't need to understand biggest ring first. Secondly, it's size allows it to fit in a carry-bag for a toy on the run; I used it as entertainment in restaurants easily. Thirdly, I am still using it because now we are into learning colors. It was well worth the investment.
What is the material? NOT made of solid woods by ayame
Within one day, one of the sticks was broken from the surface of the tray. My 19 months old daughter is a very gentle toy user, hardly breaks anything, so I was so shocked to see it. When I saw the center of the stick, I realized its inside is NOT A SOLID WOOD: some kind of unknown materials look like woods, which also started to make me be worried about other M&D's toys we have. I was disappointed since I am usually satisfied with this manufacturer. I also liked the idea of this toy, however, before the satisfaction of its educational value or enjoyable level for children, I as a parent wanted to have more durable material which won't be broken so easily! Therefore my rating is only one star for its toy's idea. I won't recommend this toy to children who is older than 19 months or very active toy users.
Not sure if this batch is part of recall... by Morrissey "Invested"
CBC News excerpt regarding this product quoted below:
"The federal agency (Health Canada) issued the barium-related recalls for the seven children's toys between August and October...In August, (recall) notices were issued ...A stacking toy set called "Geometric Stacker" by Melissa and Doug (item 094730, UPC 000772005678, batch ZP1207)."
Must attend children playing with this by J. Wang
To begin playing, take the blocks off the poles. At first I was worried she would fall over and hurt herself on these exposed poles. Next, the poles fell off, which then exposes this clear glue which my child wants to chew on.
Just like the sorting cube I bought with this, the colored paint chips off. The square is 2 shapes which fit to be a square. Seems like a good advanced concept, but mostly concerned of the sharp edges. So those were put away.
I should have bought one of the plastic versions of this. The paint would not have chipped off. And maybe the poles would have been attached to the base rather than adhered with toxic glue.
Beware, this bleeds by Victor Christianson
Maybe it's non-toxic but after a half hour of our toddler playing with this - although he enjoyed it - his hands were red and there were red stains on his t-shirt. So its in the garbage now. Is it non-toxic I don't know, though if toy makers used toxic paints for years and lied about them, there's little reason to believe a label that boldly says non-toxic. How many pieces of clothing out there with Gucci labels are not made by Gucci?
No batteries! Yay! by Mary E. Lewis
I bought this for my 18 month old daughter who loves her plastic fisher-price ring stacker. She loves this one more. She will play with this toy for an hour and she has already learned how to reverse the order of the pieces and moves them from post to post.
Great design, abysmal fabrication by Anon
Quality control on the product is nil. Had to return item because the parts were assembled with wet paint, so ALL of them stuck together--required a knife to separate and all of them ended up with severely chipped paint. The replacement was worse. DON'T BUY IT. A shame, because the design is great--its more complex than other versions. But stick with the better ones--Plan Toys for instance.
Has potential to be dangerous by Lisa
A friend got this for our toddler. It's a great idea but poorly executed. We didn't have any problems with paint or anything like that. Problem is, when the pieces come off, you are left with three thin dowels/stands sticking straight up. Anyone who has a toddler knows that is an accident waiting to happen. One trip head first into this thing and the dowels are thin enough to take out an eye. Also, the edges are not smoothed down, so it also has the potential to tear skin if landed on.
I would suggest that Melissa and Doug use MUCH thicker stands that are smoothed and rounded at the top.
Cheap Chinese Wood Results in Potentially Unsafe Toy... by delicateflower152
We purchased this toy as one of our grandson's Christmas gifts. Melissa and Doug toys have a great reputation, so I assumed that reputation was a result of not only their educational value, but also of their durability. You know what they say about "assume..."
As soon as he opened this toy, our grandson took the first stack of blocks off the post; the other stacks soon followed. Then, as fourteen month-old children are prone to doing, our grandson lifted the base by holding onto the first post. It immediately snapped; this resulted in a sharp and splintered point which protruded just above the base and was unsafe. The remaining piece of the post was also sharply pointed, splintered, and would have been unsafe had my grandson decided to run with it. After looking over the base and posts, my spouse removed all three and replaced them with oak dowels which were glued into place using extra strong wood glue. He also sanded them so they were very smooth and would not splinter. In his woodworker's opinion, the original posts were made of cheap, relatively soft wood which probably originated in China as the toy was made there.
The various geometric shapes take this toy outside the realm of a standard stacking toy. The shapes are interesting, colorful, and require some thought to stack them correctly. The exteriors of the shapes are nicely finished. The holes which fit over the posts are not as smoothly finished, but are not so rough as to cause a parent/grandparent to worry about splintering.
Had this toy been more carefully made, using better materials so that it did not break at its first use, I would have rated it more highly. However, because of its immediately breaking and because the break could have resulted in injury, I am rating it as a three-star item. You would do well to look for alternative stacking toys for your precious little one.
I was excited that my brother gave this to my son for Christmas, because I am a fan of wooden toys... the less toxic plastic toys around the better as far as I am concerned. However I was VERY disappointed when the paint started chipping off. It was coming off and sticking to my hands...there was no way I was going to let my son play with it! I returned the defective item.
Kids love it by L. Jacobs "L. Jacobs
I purchased the stacker for the nursery at church. The kids seem to really enjoy placing the pieces on the pegs - not necessarily in order, but that's o.k. This teaches them great hand-eye coordination. The only problem with having this in a church nursery with other toys and several children is that it is hard to keep track of all the pieces - they seem to scatter and walk away. We lost one piece after the first day. This is not a design problem or complaint of the toy. Overall - I think it's great!
variety stacker by Debra L. Dean "nana"
I bought this geometric stacker for my 14 month granddaughter. She can already put the shapes on the stick and will be able to play with this for a few more years to challenge her as she grows. I like the rectange size of how they fit together. I do suggest that parents only let children under age two to play with this toy with adult supervision because of the sticks could be a safety issue.
This was a huge hit with my 9 month old. He plays with it everyday and always looks for it in his toys.
Blue Mouth by Mrs. V
My 10 month old daughter received this toy for Christmas from her grand parents. She started playing with it right away and of course pieces went right into her mouth. Her grandma assured me it was a quality product with safe paint and construction. Well she was as floored as I was then when we saw blue stain all over my daughter's mouth! I took the block and rubbed it with my hand - and off came more paint. We put it up and she has yet to play with it again- maybe when she is no longer putting everything in her mouth, but she might be bored by it then.
Great idea, bad quality! Paint comes off! by Shayna
The more Melissa & Doug toys I buy, the more I am realizing how bad they are! It's such a shame too, because the toy concepts are so great, but the quality is just lacking. From the moment I got it, I could tell the paint job was bad, you could see peg marks from where they had a piece attached to something, then painted all around it. The worst part is the paint comes off onto everything!! The pieces are practically crayons! My son rubbed this against our white wall and realized he could use it to draw!! We've had it for about a year now and the blocks look terrible. I would not recommend this... there are much better quality wooden toys on the market.
Beware. This toy may hurt little ones by S. geddamuri "Geddam
This toy may be good for education and play time but it could be dangerous if your little one is small enough.Once all the rings are taken off then the poles are dangerous if little one falls on it.I bought but not be using untill 2+ years.
This is one of the best toys I have ever purchased. My 19 month old and three year old love this toy. My husband and I don't mind putting it together either. Such a great quality and fun colors and good learning experience for little minds. Can't go wrong with this purchase!
Pieces quite small-Great craftmanship by bluebutterfly
Just got this today. I like the colors, craftsmanship and design! However, I bought it thinking my 6 month old might be able to play with it since the materials are non-toxic etc. but it's much smaller than I thought and I'm only comfortable with him playing with the two or three biggest rings and not the stand so far. We'll see how it holds up when he gets older but I love the classic look and will probably display it on his shelf until I'm not worried about a choking hazard.
Great Designs but Paint Is Chipping! by C. J. Lambert "Eli's
I purchased 3 Doug & Melissa toys for my grandson, while he loves the colors and they are easy to handle, every single one of the toys has chipping paint. Poorly painted and since we don't really know what the paint is we no longer allow him to play with these toys. I am surprised that toys clearly intended for rough play, i.e., pounding, grabbing, throwing, don't last more than a few days. Disappointed!
Melissa & Doug have something good going on by Elaine
Our eight month old son loves his new geometric stacker. It was an instant like for our son, and he is not easily won over with toys, we are still discovering what he likes. The only drawback is when you wash the blocks in mild soap the paint chips off, this my son won't mind and probably won't ever notice - but as a mom - I do. But, I think it was worth buying and the price is right - Melissa & Doug have something good going on with their geometric stacker!
good BLOCKING fun by MRPickles
Overall a good stacking block for my 2-3yr old. She can stack everything as shown, name every color, and count too, plus tell me most
of the shapes of the blocks. A good dexterity and learning colors, counting, and what each shape is called.
I would suggest a BIGGER bulky blocks (less halfs or smaller blocks) for younger 1-2yr olds to start off with 1st and work there way to this buy
2.5yrs old. But do start young 1 to 1 1/2 with bigger blocks and they can work there way to this like my kids did.
Would rate a 3.8 out 5. not a 100% amazing learning toy or that has lasting fun for a child but a good advance to a lower level stacker/rings etc.
One of the best toy my 21 mo son play with, a lot fun and creativity. Not sure who have more fun, me or my baby... ;)) Highly recommended!!!
My 2 year old loves puzzles and this one is great. It teaches so many things...colors, shapes, patterns, coordination, stacking, designs etc.... I have already given it as a gift too. This will be my toddler gift of choice from now on.
Great Concept, Very Poorly Made and Dangerous by Angie "New mom 08"
My two year old loves to do puzzles, so I thought this would be a great toy for him. First of all, it is made VERY poorly. A substantial amount of paint chipped off after only a week. I found a lot of paint chips on my floor and in my sons mouth. I was furious! The holes in the pieces are small and are perfect for a little finger to get stuck. There are marks where the paint wasn't allowed to dry and rubbed off on other pieces and on the center piece that holds everything. DO NOT BUY THIS! It is incredibly cheap and you do not want your child to eat paint. Find a product of higher quality, probably made in America.
My nephew (1 yr old) LOVED the box it was packaged in... oh and the toys as well. Seriously though, Ordered it for Nephews Bday, and sister said he loved it, and it came in at perfect time, he was sick and fussy, then he was contently playing with his stuff. Also turns out it was on my sister's wish list. Yes this will be the same product review for BOTH the geometric Stackers, and Deluxe 50-piece Wooden ABC/123 Blocks Set. Both Items are from Melissa and Doug, both had super shipper savings, both were a great combo.
I bought this toy for my 10 month old son and he loves it. It is great for developmental growth and keeps challenging him with the different shapes! Great investment and great value
15 month old LOVES this toy! by alexa
My 15 month old loves this toy, and has been enjoying it since she was 13 months old. It says 2+ on the packaging (or so I recall) so I was worried it would be too advanced. However, she grabbed it off the shelf of toys r us, and wouldn't let it go...so we added it to her Christmas gifts. It only took her a day or two at 13 1/2 months to figure how to put the pieces on the rods - a little harder than the plastic ring stackers. But once she figured it out, she was obsessed! I highly recommend it. She is still playing with it two months later, which is the real test! The paint is starting to chip, but my daughter is really rough on the pieces - throwing them all around the room, so I think that's reasonable.
I read a lot of reviews... by JWSteinbach
I read a lot of reviews of Melissa and Doug toys and overall the toys I have purchased have been great. This one, however, I finally experienced a problem I read over and over in the reviews regarding the paint. Pieces of this puzzle were stuck together and when pulled apart pulled paint off. I HATE that. Why? And it is a fairly small puzzle but that doesn't bother me like not getting to have a nice new toy for my daughter to destroy. Shipping was very prompt.
Out of all the toys I have bought my child, this has been the most disappointing. The paint has chipped off so easily that I know feel they are unsafe for her to play with. It makes me rethink buying any other Melissa and Doug products.
My son is so young to play with this item. However, we are having a lot of fun. It is a steady and colorful toy.
Does Size Matter? by Gavin's Mommy
Overall, the product is good, but it is much smaller than I expected. Apparently, I didn't pay enough attention to the dimensions before my purchase. I love that it is wood, I love it covers all the primary colors, and I love that it has different shapes. I don't love that it is small and that there are A LOT of pieces, and I don't love that the wood pins are the same size from top to bottom and doesn't require being stacked according to size. Every piece can fit on each pin the same in any order. I would recommend this product if you're unable find a better option.
Made well by Inga Bukharova "inga
my daughter is 17 months and loves this toy. The great thing is that it has different levels of difficulties. She loves figuring it out. Great price too.
good basic toy for young toddlers by glenda
Bought this for granddaughter who is almost two - she played with it - very age appropriate. good for colors and shapes - easy to store and put away.
great toy for 16 mth old by Ronda Thomson "Jordy
Our 16mth old grand daughter loves this toy. She has mastered putting all the blocks in the right place. Now we are working on getting the colors in the right columns, one more week and she will have that down. We also place with the rounds ones, use them as rings, so she can be fancy. Then another thing we do is not use the stacker just the blocks and I see how high I can stack them before she knocks my pile over. She loves this and it's a great booster for her, she can beat gramma before I get them all stacked. She loves it and plays with it all the time. I highly recommend it for great hand and eye coordination.
I bought this for my niece, and I think that she's gonna love this toy based on her other toys.
Fun but easily broken by K. Larkin
I bought this for my son for his 2nd birthday and he loved it! He played with it all the time but we had to take it away from him when, with very little effort, he was able to remove all the poles from the base of the puzzle. We tried fixing the problem, but we weren't able to get the poles to stay in their slots correctly. Eventually, the puzzle pieces would knock the poles over and we ended up throwing the puzzle away. It's a great concept, and I'd love to purchase another one, but I'm not going to knowing that the same thing could happen again. There has to be a better way for Melissa and Doug to attach the poles so that they will actually stay on the base.
I really like this toy to teach color and shapes however my daughter hardly plays with it, it doesn't hold her attention
