5looks great...but by GracegirlPA "agrace3

I purchased this toy based on my past experiences with the wonderful quality of Melissa & Doug products--also the fact that my 3 year-old son sat on the floor of the toystore and played with this (w/o batteries) for over a 1/2 hour! He is not the type of child to beg for a toy, but he didn't want to leave this one behind.

We bought it, got the batteries in, and he has been playing with it ever since. However, just hours after playing with it, the locks started falling out of the doors. They pop back on easily, but he can't do it himself. Also, now I have to worry about the pieces getting lost.

I'm really surprised at the shoddy quality of the locks and the doors (you have to pull them open with your thumb--making it easier for the locks to snap out of place). For the price of this toy (I spent $33 on it at a novelty toy shop) it should be sturdier. Since we purchased this on vacation at a resort town, I am unable to return it. I also know my son would be heartbroken if I took it back.

I plan on contacting Melissa & Doug regarding this. I hope they can help out b/c we have been huge fans of their products for years!

520 mo and 5yr old love it!!!! by SierraSarah "SierraS

Our kids, 5 years, and 20 months old, go this as a Christmas present. It has been played with constantly since. We have not had any issues with it yet. Will comment later if any come up. Melissa and doug have probably fixed the key hole problem mentioned in the other review (from a few years ago). I cannot imagine them falling out they way they are today. The baby loves to play with the little people putting them in and out, and of course, ringing the "ding dong"s. The five year old loves to lock the doors so that her little sister cannot play with the little dolls. But we secretly hide the big girls other toys in there while she is at school!

We have purchased this for a friends birthday party that is coming up. She loved to play with it too when over for a playdate! Only bummer is that the dolls are white. Wish there was a choice on skin tone.

5Fun but the keys are hard to use by M. Collins

My daughter (3.5 yrs) got this as a gift, and she was thrilled with it at first. The doorbells are fun to ring (you have to put in batteries, 2 AAA, not included)

One thing that we noticed is that one of the doorbells seems to stick and you have to press it "just right" to get it to work, the other 3 work fine.

My daughter has had a lot of practice with hand-eye coordination, etc, and she can even string beads easily on a string. Yet, she has some trouble with some of the keys with this set. Mostly the "C" shaped one, as it is a bit tricky to maneuver.

Overall, for the price? the dolls that come with it (4) are nice and my daughter uses them with her dollhouse, too. So I would say this is a good choice to go with.

Cons:
keys can be hard to do for toddlers
the straps that they keys are on is attached to the top (which is good, won't lose the keys) but the strap could be slightly longer.. it's just barely long enough and it would be easier for kids if it was longer, for them to be able to turn the keys better.

5Disappointed! by MoCo

My 20 months nephew loves playing with doors and I thought it would be a fun gift for him. I received the first order and one of the doors just won't open. I got a replacement unit, then one of the doorbell doesn't function properly - sometimes it rings and sometimes it doesn't. There are also minor scratches on the wooden door and the locks. I have to say though it's a very sophisticated design and it's a lovely unit. My nephew loves putting the baby doll in and out of the house and enjoys listening to the door bell. But I think because of the complexity of the design the product is not as sturdy and door locks don't function smoothly. Melissa and Doug have some great creative toys but this one is disappointing.

5Poor Quality Keys and Locks by Carol

I bought this toy for a Christmas gift for my grandchildren because I think Melissa and Doug toys are usually very well made and interesting. The kids enjoy playing with it but the keys were bent in the first 15 minutes of play and can no longer be used. They still play with the doorbells but I was disappointed in how poor the quality of the keys and locks were. I would Not recommend this toy.

5Cute toy but key won't fit! by S. Rourke "mama"

My kids love playing with keys so when I came across this toy, I thought it would be perfect! The main purpose of this toy is to unlock each door with its own special shaped key. However, the "u" shaped key does not fit whatsoever inside the lock.. making that door completely disfunctional. Out of the four doors, only three are useable. A little disappointed since that is the whole idea of this toy. Also, the battery compartment for the doorbell sounds is a little tricky to open. If you are going to design a keyhole with a "matching" key, shouldn't the toy be inspected to make sure the key fits first??

5Excellent toy! by M. PANIZA

My daughter (22 months) loves keys and locks. It's a really challenging puzzle plus a nice little doll house to boot. She can't really use the keys yet because they are so small, but she loves the idea and plays with this a lot. It's also a little treasure chest for putting all her small toys in, and then locking the door. The keys are attached to the handle with a sturdy little ribbon so she can't lose them. This was a really good find!

5Every child I know loves this by Lisa K. Teruya "Mom

My son is 2 years old and loves this toy. Whenever we have kids at the house, they all fight over this toy. From my experience, I hightly recommend it.

5great for younger ones as well by bigbaby

My boy is almost 11 months and he loves this toy! I got it used so the people are missing, but he doesn't seem to mind. He loved opening and closing the doors and ringing the doorbell. I cut off the rope attaching the keys to the house because I was scared it would be a choking hazard but I'm keeping it for later, making this a great grow-with-me toy! I highly recommend this even for parents of children younger than the manufacturer's recommended age! Great buy!

5Fun house by Kim Whalen

My 20 month old son loves keys, so I decided to try this house. It is very cute, and he played with it for three days straight when we first got it. He plays with it less now, but it is up there with his favorite toys.

5so great, except those darn locks by kimberly

I love this toy. All the different doorbells, the cute little people that you can hide inside. My 2.5 year old was so excited about it and does really enjoy it. Unfortunately, the locks are VERY difficult to open for little and big hands. It is cool to have real metal keys, but the locks are really tricky.

5Doorbell House by Carole M Rocha

I bought this for a Christmas present for my 4 year old granddaughter. She loves it. She had a little problem at first but she figured it out and plays with it every day now.

53-year old loves it by Krystal "Krystal"

My three-year old really enjoys this toy. The doorbells are a big hit. My one complaint is that the strap that attaches the strap to the handle is too short. For little ones just figuring out keys, it creates and impossible angle to the keyhole. That has discouraged my son from attempting the locks at all. He does love playing with its other parts though. Overall, the quality is a little lower than I expect from Melissa&Doug.

5This toy should not be sold! by Ann Wexford

The quality of this toy is very poor. I had to order 7 dollhouses just to find 2 that were not gouged or broken. I don't expect this toy to last very long. Two of them came gouged. Two of them had one doorbell that didn't work. One came with a lock pushed in even before it was opened. I can't believe that Melissa & Doug would ever make something of such poor quality. No wonder you can't find it on their website anymore. Very disappointed. Something that looked so cute & adorable turned out to be a nightmare finding 2 that were in good condition. I'm afraid to ask my niece if it's still in working condition. Bet it's not.

5granddaughter's favorite birthday gift by Nana

I gave this to my 3 year old granddaughter for her birthday and it was her favorite gift. She is fascinated with locks and keys so it was perfect. The design is sturdy and attractive and I love that she can carry it with her, which she did. She is learning to match the number on the key to the door number to help open them and has to manipulate each key just right. The only negative is that the keys are not very heavy metal so we need to remind her not to try to force them as they could get bent or break off. Also, keys are attached to the handle with a web strap so they won't get lost...nice touch!

5Attention keeper for long periods by K. Muth "Kiari"

Not many toys can keep my 4 year old entertained for long periods of time. This is a big ticket item. She (as with my 3 year old) will sit and play with this toy for large stretches of time. So far no complaints, well worth the money and the problem solving skills they learn from it.

5its great by Sub

For a toddler interested in keys this is a great gift. It takes some problem solving and its quite unique. seems to be well made although one of the doors is a little tight.

5eye catching! by momof3

I ordered this wooden doorbell house for my almost 4 yr old daughter for Christmas and am very pleased with it so far. I am excited to see her open it on Christmas morning. This toy is better than described. The colors and details on the house are so cute! Seems very durable and I am glad the keys are attached so they will not get lost. The 4 wooden dolls included are a good size...not too big and definitely not too small like some of the more popular dollhouse/polly pocket style toys. I have 2 younger children and don't have to worry about them getting a hold of any small pieces. I am sure this will hold her attention!

5Hours of Fun by sunnyskies

Looks smaller than it sounds but very, very cute. Our granddaughters (3 and 5 years old) both love it. The house has 4 compartments inside, so each door accesses a separate compartment and our girls never seem to get tired of ringing the doorbells, opening and closing doors... They put the 4 little kids (that come with the house) inside and then take them out, again and again.

Each door has its own key and the keys are tethered to the house. So far great, but the tie is so short and wide that it makes it really difficult to use the little keys. On the plus side, the doorbells ring so softly that they do not disturb anyone. Cute toy!

5Great learning tool, wish keys were larger by Angela Rose

I bought this for my 2.5 year old son and he is still unable to open they doors with the keys but he loves playing with it. The house seems well built and I hope it will last awhile :)

5the keys could be a little easier to use by mom of 3

The keys get stuck sometimes and the numbers are SO hard to see on the keys--this could be a great toy with a few tweaks.

5Make Believe Fun by E. Kennedy

I gave this to a 5 year old for her birthday and she loves it. The working locks and brass keys are great! She really enjoys the little dolls that came with the house too. Her parents say it's worked out great for car trips or play dates since it's easy to carry.

5fun house by doting grandmother

My four year old granddaughter loves this toy. She enjoys locking and unlocking the doors. Even my 11 month old grandson like to carry the house around. They both play with this house a lot.

5My FAVORITE Melissa and Doug item! by Tom Tom "Redwings"

This is by far my favorite Melissa and Doug item. They had it out several years ago and then discontinued it. I searched for a year for one, even on eBay for a used one and never found one at an acceptable price or with all pieces. Then it was re-released and I found it on Amazon while searching for other Melissa and Doug products. I was SO excited and ordered it right away. Needless to say, my kids LOVE it! It is so adorable. Each doorbell makes a different sound and each key is labeled and attached to the top so they don't get lost. And the little people that come with it work with my daughters wooden house from PBK. Extremely durable and so adorable. Such a wonderful gift and great price from Amazon. Perfect!!!
