Great Package, Great Price! by J. Allen
Nine year old daughter wanted a magic kit, so I purchased this one. The kit has a lot of amusing tricks and a great amount of items for the money. The items are well made and hold up to a lot of abuse, after seeing it I would think this kit would cost a lot more. Some of the tricks are silly, but some are actually very good. All the tricks are easy to understand and perform. My daughter has even done several tricks for her class at school. She has been thrilled with it and I have been very pleased. I would recommend this kit to anyone. Hope this review helps.
A high-quality product at a good price by Jasmine Mitchell
Santa brought this for my 6 year old (who had been making up her own "magic shows")and she loved it. Some of the tricks were too complicated for her, but she was able to manage many of them with some adult help. The items are of high quality compared to other "magic show" kits that we looked at.
High quality and entertaining by SEAN O'NEILL "The Ir
I bought this magic set for my girlfriend's 8 year old son. I was amazed at the quality, durability, and entertainment value of the magic set. He has been having a blast playing with it and learning the tricks. I would highly recommend it.
Deluxe Magic Set - Great Product by D. North
I purchased the Deluxe Magic Set for my daughter for her 11th birthday. This is a very good set of tricks. The tricks are fairly easy to master, and entertaining to watch her perform. Many of the tricks are quite good! Many of the tricks will stump even the most observant adult audience!
The items in the kit are sturdy and should hold up well for many, many magic shows that I know will come.
I highy recommend this kit...so does my daughter, she loves it.
WOW!! by
Well I first bought this magic set for my brother(for his birthday, when he was turning 7), thinking it would be dumb, and that the tricks would be very easy, and fake, but after I opened the box I knew i was completly wrong! This magic set is very durable, and fun for all ages! I am 13, and even I enjoy playing with this magic set! I highly recomend buying this item, it is a great buy, and im sure all kids who enjoy a magic trick once and a while, will love this set!!! - a 13 year old girl from massachusetts
My Little 'Houdini' by David Molloy
According to my 7-year-old niece, the Deluxe Magic Set is the best thing since crayons! And according to her mother, she now performs(!) for young and old at every opportunity. So, as her "magical" uncle (that's me), I'm hoping a 2nd Edition is coming in time for next Christmas - because to a kid, it sure beats getting money.
Well-made and fun by Amy Krause "MultiGee
There's a lot to like about this set - the tricks are fun and there is a nice variety. I got this for my 9-year-old son. We both liked that it was made out of wood and that the components can be stored inside the presentation box. A few of the tricks are self-explanatory and my son was doing them within minutes. For the rest, we read the instructions. There is still one trick that we still don't understand how to do based on how they are explained in the booklet. I think there could be some improvement there. Video clips of someone doing the tricks so we can see how they're supposed to work would be even better. Also, I think a bit of showmanship is needed to pull of some of these tricks and not every child may have this (mine doesn't!). That's not a flaw of the set, of course! Maybe he'll develop that a bit more after a few more family gatherings.
Beautiful set by R. Popper-Keizer
We have been shopping for a beginner magic set for my son for about six months now, and had trouble finding one that didn't look like a bunch of cheap plastic and paper tricks that wouldn't last a week in our house. Some kits claimed to have 50-100 tricks, but really they were the secrets to the tricks and no real props. We also weren't interested in paying $40 for a DVD and a few dimestore props.
At Christmastime, I gave up. There were some nice kits for older kids/adults, but for beginners it was dismal. Come February (birthday month) I looked again, and gave up. Luckily as I was leaving the last store I planned to visit (at closing time the night before his birthday), I saw the Melissa & Doug set off in a corner.
The box was beautiful! It reminds me of the old Victorian parlor magicians. And I can't say enough about how great it is to be able to buy wooden toys that are durable and will last. And all of the pieces are painted nicely with Egyptian themes and exotica, adding to the 'atmosphere' of the show. Bonus to the fact that my son had just been to the Tomb and was interested in Pharaoh's and hieroglyphs!
I think it's perfect. My 8 year old son loves it and was able to do all of the tricks right after I demonstrated them to him. He did them for the adults, and with the exception of two of the simpler tricks, they were quite impressed and they couldn't figure out how it was done. The two best tricks even caused some actual jaw-dropping! He was overjoyed to be able to see grown-ups astounded, and thought it was hilarious that they couldn't figure out how he did it!
I would suggest the company add a good strong clasp of some sort to hold the box closed when not in use, but that is all I would do to improve on it.
I also loved the format of the instructions, with the aged, burned parchment effect of the paper, and the fact that every trick/prop was illustrated on the bottom of the package so you knew exactly what you were getting, plus you could see most things the way it was packaged.
Another work of art from M&D.
A MAGIC SET that is WORTH BUYING! by Super Shopper "super
I cannot imagine why this set would get anything other than a five-star rating! The value is superb! I would have paid a much higher price to get the quality and fun this toy provides. My children aged 11,8 and 6 were able to perform the magic with ease. The pieces were mostly made of wood and velvet and the colors are very vibrant. The magic was very amusing and would keep the adults guessing. I highly recommend this set to all the parents out there with kids interested in magic.
We first bought this set a year ago as a birthday present for a friend's child. Ever since then, my daughter has wanted it. She finally got it, and it has exceeded expectations. The tricks are durable and easy to manipulate (for an 8-year-old). The paintings on the tricks are also very cool--old-fashioned and spooky looking.
I would recommend buying a general book on how to be a magician with it. Although detailed instructions for the tricks are provided with the set, there is no information on the other aspects of magic, such as sleight-of-hand and how to direct the audience's attention elsewhere.
Great tricks for kids by paula
Have ordered a few magic kits & this one is the best - since my child can actually do & enjoys all of the tricks in this kit.
This magic set is the best in the world. My 9 year old daughter can't put it down. It is extremely well made and durable. Sophisticated tricks yet simple enough for young children to *get* it. Excellent play value. Unbelievable value for the money. I wasn't expecting much and can't believe how they put this together for so little money. Leads kids to think and see things in new ways. A GREAT find.
Perfect "Starter" Magic Set by L. A. Cotter
My son is six, and I searched pretty hard to find a set that I thought was of the appropriate age level for him, I picked out three and he chose this one from the three. He is very happy with it, and it gets a lot of use.
It was easy to teach him the tricks and he can perform all of them with out getting frustrated, a huge plus; and there are plenty of tricks in the box.
It is very sturdy and well made, as I have found of all Melissa& Doug products. We like it so much, we have bought the set for birthday gifts for his friends.
Wooden Magic Fun! by David D. Ritter "Dad
This is a quality, wooden magic set. It is probably a "second" set, after your child is done toying around with a Marvin's Magic plastic set or whatever. There are ten tricks, all are worthwhile, two are showstoppers. My son will be putting on a magic show for his 7th Birthday and we feel confident in using these tricks. They look nice, work, are easy, and fun.
hard to entertain 10 yr old boy by grandma cheryl
great product-my grandson is a gifted young man and he needs a great deal to keep his mind challenged. the magic set was a big hit!!!
Love the Set! by Colton & Kia's mom
We had purchased a smaller Melissa and Doug Set for my then 6, now 7 year old son and he loved it so much that we purchased this deluxe set for Christmas. He quickly mastered the tricks and takes such pride in performing shows/tricks for his friends. We've also been very impressed with the durability of the pieces. Other sets have cheap plastic or cardboard pieces, whereas Melissa & Doug Sets are comprised of wooden pieces, accentuated with velvet & silky cloths. Love it.
Melissa and Doug Magic set by Magnum_Mama
Was a nice magic set for the money, had tricks to engage my nine year old. It is smaller than I expected.
Actually worth it by B. BERROL
I bought this magic kit for my son, who is almost 6 years old. He's probably a bit too young for this (he feels the need to explain how he does each trick), but it is a great magic set. I got it because it was made of real wood, appeared well made, and looked better than those kits that have "400 tricks" and are made of cheap plastic. I was pleasantly surprised: the tricks actually work and everything does look and feel pretty good (e.g., hankerchiefs that feel like real silk). I'd recommend it for 7 and up. It's one of those gifts that was actually as good as I hoped it would be, and my son really enjoys it.
Decent magic kit for the price by Proud Ranger
This is a nice starter magic kit. It has a couple cheesey tricks, but overall it is a good set. My boys like using it and experimenting with new tricks.
Fun, cool & durable...what more do you need? by J. Scharp
My son wanted a magic set to replace an old junky one he had gotten a couple years ago. Most of the old set was broken or lost. We saw this set online. From my previous experiences with Melissa and Doug items I had hoped it would be of the same nice quality I came to expect. I am pleased to say it is!! This set is really cool in looks AND in its functionality, and durability. My 9 year old son really likes it, says its much cooler than his other plastic set, and has been mastering all the tricks (all very do-able for a kid 8+). The tricks are for kids to master as they are pretty obvious for adults to figure out. But I think it is also educational in that a lot of magic is a bit of science...and he is learning a bit of showmanship as well as he performs these tricks for people. I highly recommend this set...it comes with plenty of start up items to make a kid interested in magic quite happy, and the durability of most all the items will make the parent happy too!
I love most of Melissa and Doug's toys but I thought this was to much of the same thing. All the tricks were pretty much the same idea. And every trick was made from wood which makes this durable but not very fun. I remember the magic set my brother had as a kid. It had the glass with the liquid and the quarter trick with the box. Just other things that were quick, fun and easy. I gave this to my niece who is 6 years old. Her eyes lit up when she saw this but when it was opened and played with, I could tell she was not finding these tricks that fun or easy.
this is a very fun for upcoming magicans, there was one missing coin trick that did not have all the parts in it but I did not know who to contact about it. But the other tricks worked good.
Six Year Olds Favorite Toy by Michelle R. Houston
My son and I LOVE this toy. In fact, it is such a nice toy that many of my friends have purchased this for their children after visiting us. The only complaint that I have is that the case doesn't latch shut and everything falls ou the moment you move it. I had to purchse a plastic bin to keep it in.
Hit of the Christmas Party by Mama-to-be
I bought this for an eight-year-old family member and it was his favorite gift! He wanted to perform each trick for every person at the Christmas party. Plan to spend a few hours helping your child learn the tricks unless s/he is a really strong reader (and maybe even if s/he isn't). This toy is probably the opposite of plopping your kid down in front of the TV. Love it!
I purchased this set for my 9-year old son and he LOVES it. It has many different tricks to learn and encourages imagination. It is a Melissa & Doug's brand toy which always seem to be quality made. I am happy I got this for him!
Pre School Magic Set by Thomas D. Thaman
2 sets were purchased. They were for 5 & 6 yr old boys. They love them. It allows them to participate with their parents. At family gatherings the boys put on magic shows.
The BEST magic set I've seen yet! by L. Benjamin
This is totally awesome! I can't say enough about it! Melissa and Doug brand rocks!!! The quality is always above and beyond!!! I will shop Melissa and Doug products for life and recommend to everyone!
Excellent by Mario Covarrubias Jr
This magic set by far exceeded my expectations. All of the pieces are of high quality and they look very professional. I bought this for my 10 year old son and we've both had a lot of fun practicing the tricks to make them seamless. I would highly recommend this set.
My only "complaint" is that it comes in a hinged wooden box, but the box does not have a latch to keep it shut. This would make it great for storing all the pieces. Otherwise, it was a super purchase and I plan to buy the smaller kit for his birthday. Another quality Lisa and Doug product.
Mom of Four Great Kids by Margie J. Allen "apr
I gave this set to my 10 year old daughter for Christmas and it has definitely been her most played-with gift. It has Melissa and Doug sturdiness and many different tricks. It is a perfect 1st magic set for ages 6-11. My only complaint is the box that it stores in does not close--a little clasp would have made it a self-storing toy.
I gave this magic set as a gift to my nephew. His parents said he played with it for hours. He is eight and is learning the tricks well. The set seems to be durable. His mother was afraid the tricks would be hokey but she has enjoyed them over and over. Out of the magic sets I found in stores and online this one seems to be the nicest for the price. I would buy it again.
Very Good Value by G. J. Dolicker
This set is of very good quality, has a good selection of effects, and a very good price. There are a couple GREAT effects (Magic coin box for one), and a couple silly ones (cylinder squeeze for one), and the rest are good and entirely kid-appropriate. The instructions could use some improvement on how to present the effects, not just how they work. I bought this for my 5 1/2 year old, and she can do all but "magic number prediction" (requires math) and "disappearing ball" (requires greater dexterity) convincingly after limited practice. It helps her think, use her imagination, and develop self confidence through presentations.
You get a lot of stuff in this set, and the tricks actually work! Pieces are quality made with wood, painted with engaging colorful imagery. A couple tricks are hard for my 6 year old, but all the tricks are fun for kids and grownups. Encourages hand-eye coordination.
This is a wonderful way to introduce a child to the world of illusions by Timothy B. Riley
I have been involved in magic as a hobby since I was 11. My first kit was all plastic and some of the tricks were not well thought out and were impractical. Still, it got me hooked. I now use tricks and illusions to illustrate my sales and training seminars. This set is far superior to the one that I received over four decades ago.
One of the things that I like about it is that all of the tricks are made of wood. They are well made and well decorated. Some of the tricks are a little lame but that is just my opinion.
I bought this as a gift for a budding magician (7 years old) and he loved it! Honestly, I would have paid $10-15 more for a set of this quality. Great product and I highly recommend it.
My six-year old daughter has been completely captivated by this magic set. She's had so much fun putting on shows for family members and hasn't needed too much help in figuring out how to successfully perform the tricks. Even my three year old has enjoyed being part of the act! A very well made set with good instructions. I only wish a lock had been added to the box so that all the pieces could be stored safely inside. We slip ours into a child-sized pillowcase to contain everything. We love the creative performances the magic set has inspired and the fun it has provided for our girls. This is my new favorite birthday gift for this age group!
Lots of tricks in a nice package! by Holly Mills "bookwor
Our son was given this for Christmas, and he IMMEDIATELY started learning the tricks. He is 7, and there are a few that require some more mature "finessing," but as he grows he will do better with those. Some tricks require good math skills, but all will help a child with hand-eye coordination, as well as experience the fun of performing and crafting a "stage personality." Grown-ups will likely have to read the tricks with the child the first time to be sure the actions are understood, but once the child learns them, like my son, they will likely not forget how and can than perfect the trick. The only problem with this toy? The beautiful box it comes in does not have a latch, so if you are fortunate enough to get everything back inside (hint: make a diagram as you open it for the first time - we didn't), it easily falls back out if you don't carry the box closed with two hands. But we have added a latch and cover for the hole, and it's still an awesome toy! Quality wood, fabric and painting - and no batteries! The way toys should be...
Very Impressive by Sandy Smith
I ordered this for my 9 year old daughter, and within minutes she was doing magic tricks.. It is made of wood and all of the peices are very durable.. I told my friend about it and now she is ordering one for her grandchild... It is worth every pennie...
"Best Gift Ever" by H. Schlossberg
Quality is great (solid wood), though we needed to do some touchup stitching on the bag. I got this for my 7-year-old nephew because I remember having great fun with a magic set when I was about that age (or a little older). He loves learning the tricks and showing to people with astonished looks on their faces. He may be slightly young for this in that he needs to work with an adult to help with his presentation skills, but it's a great little project for parent and child to work on together. Meanwhile, his 9-year-old sister (who loves performing in front of people) has also enjoyed learning the tricks and developing a more complex presentation. And their (almost) 5-year-old sister has deemed this as her siblings' "best gift ever".
Quality from Melissa & Doug, but wish the box was sealed by LHL's Mommy
This is a quality magic set, and presents a challenge for my 6 1/2 year old. He is still growing into it, even after having had it for a year. Beware that there are many small pieces crucial to the magic tricks, and the box does not seal closed, so it is very difficult to put away and keep track of all the small pieces...
Like most of Melissa and Doug products, this is well made and very pretty. My 8 year old wanted a magic set really badly for christmas, and this did the job. She's a smart kid and enjoyed trying to follow the instructions to learn how to do the tricks. I had to help with a couple of them, but she loves this set. It isn't perfect, but it is way better than other crap I have seen out there. The biggest problem is that the box doesn't close with a latch or anything and there is a huge hole at the top of it (for performing the tricks) so there isn't any way to keep all its parts together. It's such a weird design choice because it would have been so easy to affix a latch for closing. Whatever though, it isn't a deal breaker.
