We recently gave this to a friend's little boy for his 2nd birthday - he and all the other boys at the party played with it constantly! It says ages 3+ on the package, but the only small parts are the wheels, which seem well-attached. My 3 year old son liked the toy too, but the 2 year old boys spent far more time playing with it. The top rack slides down so the cars can all drive off the car carrier. I was impressed at how well-made the toy is and I came on today to buy another one to put away as a Christmas gift for my 1.5 year old.
Blue Car Tested Positive for Lead Paint by AmazonCustomer
I bought this for my 2-year old son who LOVES playing with it, but I don't let him use the blue car after it tested positive for lead paint.
Here is the background: A local non-profit was having a free toy testing event for lead. I brought in some older toys and, on a whim, I grabbed all the cars associated with this product. I was shocked to find out that the blue car tested positive for lead (63 ppm using a x-ray fluorescence machine). I called the 800 number for "Melissa and Doug." They assured me that all their products meet or exceed current regulations and that they do consistent testing for all their paints. They also said that they test using a "leachability" test which is a more accurate test than the x-ray fluorescence. They said they would send me the test results of that particular paint batch so I could review the results, but I was never sent anything. In the end, I am really dissappointed that a company promoting safe, non-toxic toys would allow any lead in their paint at all - and now I am reluctant to buy anything from this company again.

My grandsons love this toy - one is 3 years and the other is 2. I'm ordering another so they don't have to share. They love moving the carrier rack up and down and driving the cars off. They 'drive' the truck off around the furniture legs and come back for the cars to load them back up. This toy encourages language development as we talk about where the truck is going and where the cars will be parked, what color car should go where, etc. Great for imaginative play.
I purchased this toy for a 2 year old that loves cars and he played with this thing for hours. It seems to be pretty durable. Many of the parents were amazed at how simple the toy was, but still provided a great learning experience. I have a number of Melissa & Doug items for my own child and they all seem to be pretty well made.
Lots of Fun - Not very durable by HeatherD
My 2 1/2 year old LOVES this toy. He's all about trucks and this one he can do more than just push around. It was his FAVORITE until it broke...twice. My son is not particularly rambunctious or hard on his toys. He was trying to make it navigate a small pile of dirt in the garden and apparently pushed too hard from the top of the trailer section and the bottoms of the supports broke on both sides. There is no way to fix that. I watched him do this and he was not being rough. My suggestion to other parents is to make sure this stays and inside toy. I think the dirt took the pressure off the wheels and that created a weak spot. I let him continue to play with the front cab and a few weeks later a big chunk in the left headlight came off. I am pretty sure he dropped it. I guess I just expected more from a wooden toy. All his other wooden toys have withstood some mild abuse. I'm quite torn in whether I should buy him another one because he loved it so much, but don't want to waste any more $$$.

The quality of Melissa and Doug toys is on a steady decline. This toy feels cheaply made and the paint chips easily.
Try haba and the German toys, a little more money but they last forever and have quality you can feel.

My grandson plays some with this toy. It may be that he is a little young for it--he is 2 1/2. He likes loading the cars onto the carrier but then doesn't find it to be particularly interesting. The carrier connects to the truck cab and then there are 4 brightly painted cars. It is well enough made and may be a better fit for a 3 year old.

Purchase of this set along with the 60 piece block set, race car set and town set for my 4yr old grandson for Christmas were perfect choices. He loves building things (garages, houses, ramps, tunnels, towers, forts, etc)and pretending with anything car related so these items were perfect and have provided literally hours upon hours of imaginative fun for him alone and with other family members. The blocks especially are well sized, substantial, durable, with nice rounded corners. No problems whatsoever with wheels on the race cars or car carrier, and no problems with odor issues with the blocks some other reviewers have mentioned. The wood carrying/storage boxes for the blocks, town set and even the race cars are great when it's time to pick up - but during play time get used/turned into part of the play (bases for any of the above-mentioned building "projects".)I recommend any/all of the four purchases to stimulate good old-fashioned, creative, imaginative play for younger and even older children. I would buy them again.

Wonderful toy my 3yr old absolutely loves it and pplays with it constantly. Easy to put back together themselves when the truck cab seperates so I don't have to be around. fun to load and unload the cars over and over. My 20mo old also loves this toy so I'm sure its a hit with the younger crowd too!

I gave this to my two grandkids for Christmas. It was an instant hit. It is built strong enough to withstand the rigorous play of a two and four year old. There are enough parts that both boys enjoyed playing with it at the same time. Love the colors and working parts. The cars are even the right size to use on hotwheel tracks.

I think this is the first car carrier I have ever come across. It's an absolutely fantastic gift for any kid who likes playing with cars. The top portion moves down so you can load and unload the top cars. This is really well made and durable which in my experience is typical of most Melissa & Doug products.

We bought two for two grandsons born 3 days apart and now 2. The car carrier was a hit with even older grandchildren, and the fathers, too. Sturdy, colorful, offering several ways to play and unload. A great toy.
We bought this for my son's 1st birthday and he loves it, so do his 2.5 yr old sister and cousins. It is durable and safe, but also intriguing to the kids. The cars also work on his race track so that's a plus!
Not only is this car carrier tough and durable, but the individual pieces are so well made and will last. All the parts are removable, the hinges move smoothly, and the truck's wheels go on any surface when you push the truck around. My one-year-old grandson loved it as did his 7 and 4-year old sisters!! It is so cute!

We got this for my 3 year old son for his birthday because he loves car transporter trucks (really almost all trucks, cars, trains, etc!). We thought our 9 month old would inherit this toy pretty quickly BUT our 3 yo loves it! He got so many big trucks and toys that make lots of noise and do lots of tricks but has played with this toy the most since his birthday. He absolutely loves it!!

I bought this for my grandson's birthday which is in December, but I just couldn't wait to give it to him. He loves trucks, cars and trains more than anything. He is 21 months old and right away he figured out how to put the top part of the carrier down and unload the cars. We talk about the colors of the cars and count them, but the main thing is he just loves playing with it. Another great thing about this toy is that he has no problem connecting the trailer to the cab. All wood with smooth edges and bright colors. I like that he has to use his imagination with this also. Too many toys today run on batteries and leave little for the imagination. He has other toys by Melissa and Doug and they are very substantial toys that last and last. Bought this for our grandson. He loved it!!! Very durable and educational. Can be played with indoors or out. We would recommend this toy.
My sons love cars, trucks, buses, etc. I thought this would be a great toy. Don't get me wrong, they enjoy playing with it, just not as much as I thought they would. It is very durable and cute. My three year old will get on a kick with it and play with it for an hour one day and then not again for a week. My 19 month old loves the big green truck part in the front. Overall, I would recommend it, but it's not the most sought after toy in the house.
This is a great toy, amazing value for money: strong and nice design. My godson love it and play all the time with.

Got this for a two year old boy. He adores it, will play with it by himself or with others, talking to the cars and making vroom vroom sounds. It's just the right size for tiny hands. The toy that's always the first one picked from the toy box. Highly recommended.

This was an instant hit with my 2 year old son. An unexpected benefit is that the grooves for the cars fit our M&D and Thomas trains, too which makes this carrier quite versatile. We'll be giving this as a birthday/holiday gift to the other 2-3 year old vehicle lovers in our lives. Highly recommended!

I bought this for our 2 1/2 yr old grandson. Of all the high tech toys that light up and make noise he picked this to play with over them all. He LOVES driving the cars on and off and learned how to raise and lower the upper deck right away. He drove this all over our house for 2 days ! The different color cars were great for learning colors and it is very solid and well made. We bought this toy for our nephew's first birthday. Even though the toy is labeled for older kids, we thought he would like to play with the little cars and then as he got older, would enjoy the different aspects of the toy. He loved the toy! So did his parents, and so did his grandparents. It's well made, as are all of the Melissa and Doug toys we've bought, and fun for kids of all ages.

This was a small reward toy for an incentive for my now 4 yr old son.
I was surprised at the size, thinking it would be larger. But it didn't detract from how cute and well made this is. First, the box was just a cardboard wrapped in plastic. Imagine my surprise when we just cut away the plastic and the toy just lifted right out! No ties or plastic rings or elastics to cut!
My son took it the truck right away, putting the cars off and on and generally discovering how it worked without us. Like I said, it was thinner than I thought it would be and a bit smaller, but he didn't mind. The truck is small enough to toss into a suitcase to visit grandma but not as small as pesky matchbox cars.
Add to all the positives the fact that it's all wood and Melissa and Doug, a brand that I like a lot.

This was a Christmas present for our 3 year old son and has been a big hit for months now. I love that this is made from wood and not plastic, and I love the simplicity of the design. I bought this car carrier on sale and feel like I got a great deal.
My mother-in-law was in town shortly after Christmas and liked this so much, I ordered two more sets for her other grandchildren. I would certainly buy this product again, and will be looking for other Melissa and Doug items in the future.
My 16 month old son loved playing with this on Christmas morning. It held his interest for a long time. He still enjoys it. I am beginning to teach him his colors with these cars. You can't go wrong with this purchase.
I thought this would be a great toy for my 18 month old grandson. He has only had it a day or so and his response to it may change with time, but he doesn't seem particularly taken with it at this point. At the moment I think a slightly older child would enjoy it more. It requires a certain amount of dexterity to position the vehicle wheels in the tracks. He comprehends the idea and moves the top level of the car carrier up and down but doesn't yet play with it very much. Having said that, the toy is very well constructed, attractive, and, as I said, I believe he will play with it much more when he's just a bit older.

My 4 year old princess loves this truck. It really is REALLY cute! We saw it displayed at an area shoe store and my daughter really wanted it. We were able to track it down on Amazon.com and it was delivered right to our door in just a few days. Her eyes lit up when she saw what was inside the delivery box. This wooden Car Carrier is as cute as can be. My daughter isn't very rough and tumble but I'm sure this truck will hold up for rugged little boys who find it irresistible as well. In addition to enjoying the truck by rolling it around and hauling the cars, she also loves to count the cars and take inventory!
I love old fashioned wooden toys and Melissa and Doug do a great job in creating some wonderful ones. However, I was really disappointed in the size. It was much smaller than what I had thought as the total measurement length given was with the carrier FULLY extended. I am giving this to a two year old and he will probably love it, but feel it is rather expensive for the size.

For his second birthday, our grandson received this car carrier and he was enthralled. He became very protective of it and did not want anyone bothering him as he played with it. His older siblings both wanted to play with it as well. The toy is very well made; simple in design yet has some outstanding features. The top level pulls down for an unloading ramp.
