She loves it! But it needs a lid. by Jenna Glatzer "www.j
Now, if you're going to create a cool toy like this, why wouldn't you provide a lid on the box so people can store it properly?
My 2-year-old daughter loves this set-- so much that I bought another one, too. The dolls are colorful and fun for her, and she pulls this out to play with it almost every day.
The lack of a lid is a real problem, because the pieces are all over my house since there is no good way to store it, and the small pieces are a secondary problem. My daughter doesn't stick them in her mouth, so I'm not very concerned about choking, but it's just very easy to lose the little pieces.
I see no reason why this couldn't have been designed with two shoes on one longer block, for example, or with shoes sticking out from under the skirt, so there wouldn't be so many little pieces. Especially because then the company could remove the warning that it's not for kids under 3, when it's clear from the reviewers here that 2-year-olds are using these dolls plenty.
Dress up dolls fun! by Rita Ward
Much more fun than the coloforms that my daughter had - gave this to my 3 year old granddaughter for her birthday- it's great, especially that it has its own case for all the pieces. She spent hours changing outfits and having fun with this - a great one!
durable paperdolls alternative by M. gungor "soulfire7
paper dolls tear, these will not! for added fun, stick to your refrigerator. better yet, trace your dolls and tape the outline to the fridge where your kids can play dress up in a different environment. super cool toy.
fun toy, but concerning smell by Momof2
This is a really fun toy, but when I opened the box the strong chemical smell really threw me off. I thought it would be for just a few seconds, but it lasted and after a while I started to get concerned that it was unsafe for my children. I removed it from them but I ended up sitting next to it for a bit longer myself (not by intention, just happen to be), and I got a headache and almost threw up. I decided to put this toy outside for the smell to disseminate. Eventually I felt it did go away, but I regret not having done that right away -- my children and I all ended up inhaling the smell when it was the strongest. Even if the smell seems to go away with time, it still makes you wonder what could have been the source of that smell -- it just can't be anything good.
We received this set as a Christmas present for our almost-five year old daughter. She actually already has another variation of it, but this one has two dolls and more outfits and so she was immediately taken in. So were the rest of us - by the intense sinus-burning odor of VOCs, presumably formaldehyde.
Melissa and Doug call their toys 'wood', but the majority are made of MDF - which is only wood in the loosest possible sense. It consists mostly of resin, and sawdust (enter the term wood). These are manufactured in China, and as the Melissa and Doug reps have told me in the past when I've questioned the smells their toys emit, there are no regulations on the amount of formaldehyde and other VOCs in their toys - or as they spin it in a positive light, "Our toys go through rigorous testing and meet all CPSC regualtions." There are no CPSC regulations on formaldehyde in pressed-wood products, like those made by Melissa & Doug.
In my experience, formaldehyde can cause lightheadedness and confusion, as well as sensations of burning in the eyes, nose and throat. This toy is no exception. The smell was so strong, I could detect its presence from clear on the other side of the room.
So what if your kids are exposed to a little formaldehyde, right? And if it were only a little, sure - I suppose (though I don't think it should be in their toys). But it's in virtually everything, from clothing and bedding to shampoos and soaps and baby wipes to *any* pressed wood furniture, household cabinetry, and the list goes on and on.
My children developed a clear sensitivity to it early on in their lives, when they began experiencing chemical-induced eczema from their clothing (imagine the thrill of locating formaldehyde-free clothing). So my gripe with this toy is rather personal. It's very clearly made of a poison and one that can have nasty consequences with prolonged exposure. Permanent damage to lung tissue and eventually, cancer can be long-term side effects.
So, while I understand that people wanting to bury their head in the sand will rush to click 'unhelpful' I think it's worthwhile to reach just a few people out there who believe their kids deserve better and that manufacturing toxic junk for our children is a practice that will only stop when the toxicity of these ingredients are exposed to the general public and the consumers put down their foot and say these business practices are unacceptable.
Perhaps if we all worked to make this information part of the 'general knowledge' like lead paint and BPA, well-intentioned relatives wouldn't usher these toxins into our homes.
Ok toy - magents are not strong enough though by J. Parker
This is a neat toy and my 3 and 2 year old daughters really like it. The magnets on this toy are not strong enough though and the clothes don't stick very well. Also the case that the toy comes in does not have a cover so all the clothes pieces fall out easily.
Ugh, the smell!!! by BaltimoreMom
Brilliant idea but yet again poorly executed. My daughter loves playing with this, but I do have concerns about the safety. As soon as you open up the plastic lid, the VOC's/chemical smell is really strong. Aired it out for 2 days outside and it still wreaks. Wish Melissa and Doug would stop outsourcing their products to China because the quality is obviously not good. Also, wonder about the lead content because again, it's another piece of junk made in China and we all know several Melissa and Doug products have been recalled for lead.
My 2 year old grand daughter recently broke her leg. It's been hard to find things to keep her busy. I found this toy by accident at Kohls. She loves it! She sat and played for a couple of hours. Her 5 year old brother loved it too. Dolls solidly made. The clothes stay on. She even colored one of the dolls with crayon and it wiped off. 2 snaps for this 5 star toy!!
Magnetic Dress-up by B. Dobler
My five year old loves these dress up dolls. My only complaint is there is no lid for storing them. If the box gets tipped over everything spills out. The first ones she received last Christmas had a nice lid that slid into place. Wish they would have kept it!
Great Concept, Slight Miss by Wardrobe Oxygen
First, this toy says it's for children 3 years and older and it's true. There are some REALLY TINY PARTS in this set. See those little feet on the figures? There's teeny tiny magnetic shoes for each of those teeny tiny feet. My daughter is two and she owns tons of toys for older ages and is fine with them, but this set, I won't let her have a large portion of the little magnetic pieces for fear they will be mistaken for a raisin, or even eaten by one of our dogs.
The magnets aren't as strong as I would have expected, but they do okay. You can't layer clothes, and if you prop up the doll in the pink stand, the clothes sometimes slide down the body a bit. However the pieces are well formed, nice quality, rich colors. My daughter calls them "bodies" and likes putting on and taking off their clothes (and playing with the clothes on the refrigerator and other metal surfaces).
Like others have said, this box (and most items I have gotten from Melissa & Doug) needs a lid! It's a lovely pink tray for the toy, but without a lid it's pretty pointless.
I am happy that the girls are different ethnicities, and are built like real little girls. The clothes are pretty fun - cute prints, styles that can't be associated with a certain decade and are fun and not sexy or mature.
Amazon was having 50% off Melissa & Doug toys near Christmas and I bought this on a whim. If I could do it again, I don't think I would buy this. It doesn't seem as though it was well thought out (teeny tiny pieces, unable to layer, magnets not even as strong as those for M&D wooden magnetic letters).
My 2 year old twin girls absolutely adore this toy! They can sit and play with these dolls for quite a while. They just love dressing them! I love how durable it is - one of the pieces accidentally got sent through the washer and dryer and showed no damage! I do wish that the container had a lid though because when little hands try to carry it some pieces tend to fall out.
Durable, age appropriate, and FUN! by mommyof1
My 3 yr old daughter just got this for her birthday. Even the small shoes are very easy for her to handle and put on the doll. I was originally planning on getting her "Colorforms" which I enjoyed as a child, but came across this which is much more age appropriate for her. Two can play together very nicely. Only wish there was a cover to keep all the pieces inside the box!
BOUGHT THESE FOR MY 4 YEAR OLD GRANDDAUGHTER. WE LOVE THEM AND THE ARE VERY WELL MADE...WOULD DEFINATELY PURCHASE MORE OF THESE.
almost perfect... by G. J. Ward "joysafin
2 year old loves it. mommy doesnt. comes in a lovely wooden box, but alas... no lid!! so the tiny tiny pieces are everywhere, all the time. if only they would've added a simple lid to this container, or even a little mesh bag i would be much happier.
Cute & Fun by J. Burgett "Mrs.Jenn
My 2 daughters, 3 & 8 yrs. old, both spend tons of time with these little dolls. Both saying how much they enjoy playing dress up with these girls! A fairly good price for the amount of content and also considering the numerous hours of entertainment my daughters have received from them. Would recommend this adorable toy set to any friend with daughters :)
I saw these magnetic dress up dolls on Amazon and it brought me back to my childhood paper dolls. Same concept....but far more durable. My daughter loves these dolls and they have been a great tool in terms of showing her how to dress herself. The only concerning issue is that the dolls come with small parts (i.e. shirts, shoes, etc.) that would be a choking hazard for a young child. Overall, the product is good and my daughter plays with them constantly.
Great for imagination and dolls for travel! by Roxanne K. Ong "goth
This is a classic toy that is great for girls 5-7 years. This is the time when their imagination runs free and role play/dress-up/situational is key.
What's great about this is the set is small, rectangular, flat which makes it easy to hide. So this is a toy that doesnt necessarily have to go in the play room, but can hide somewhere in the living room or bedroom etc... or at your office! And because all the pieces are flat they are quite mobile too which makes this...
A wonderful travel toy for stayovers at the grandparents.
My only quibble is I wish it came with a cover (it doesn't) so if you don't find a way to contain these stuff they will spill out/fall out. Small pieces such as shoes and gloves will get lost... so that's why this is a 4 star
Love this toy, but needs a lid!! by lindsielove
My parents got this for my daughter's 3rd birthday. I used to love paper dolls as a kid, so we were very excited to play with Abby and Emma together. These are wooden, and very durable like all the other Melissa & Doug toys. My only complaint is that there is no lid. Melissa & Doug, please start making your beautiful toys come with lids!! We have this same issue with anything made by Melissa and Doug (all of the food sets, too). Otherwise, we love playing this together; even my 2-year old daughter has a blast.
This magnetic toy is a hit at my house. My girls ages 7 and 4 love playing and dressing these dolls up. It is very durable, and I am sure it will last a very long time.
Fun for a 4 year old, terrible packaging by Julie
Bought this for a 4 year old. She really likes dressing up the girls in all sorts of outfits. The one thing I cannot stand about this toy is the packaging. There is no lid. It has tiny pieces and no lid! The only way I have found to keep it all together is to slid it into a 2 gallon zip lock bag. It will not fit in a 1 gallon.
Great for imaginative play, tricky to keep track of by Angela G. Hubbard
I recently bought this for my 3 year old daughter and a second for her friend's birthday (also 3 years old). I really like this a lot because it takes the paper doll toy and kicks it up a notch. The dolls are a good size and my 3 year old loves playing dress up with them. The parts are a good size and are easy for her to handle. The only downside is there are lots and lots of pieces of clothing/shoes/etc and the package doesn't keep them contained. Sure there are little "bins" for everything but the shoes are tiny and easy to lose. Overall I really love the product and it's of the quality you'd expect from Melissa and Doug - I just wished they included a way to keep everything together more easily.
Excellent fun, but agree with other reviews that it needs a lid! by M. Jacobsen "I am no
My three year old daughter just loves this and plays with it constantly. Unfortunately, I have to keep it up on the counter otherwise she'd quickly lose the pieces because there is no lid for the darned thing. Perhaps if you stored it in a big Tupperware container it would serve better, but the box it comes in is sturdy wood and all compartmentalized for the pieces. So for now, I just keep it up where we can keep track of all the pieces.
Little Girls Delight by Peach Fuzz "pjd"
My 3-year old grand-daughter loves to play with these girlie girls. Her 2 old cousin also likes them. A wonderful distraction during car trips.
She loved it! by 243
Bought this for my niece. She loved it. Not sure if she still plays with it. But, I've seen her dress up her characters on several occasions.
This is my first time buying a puzzle/game of this sort. I usually stick to the simple Melissa and Doug, standard puzzles, which have been a favorite of my 3 year old. Came across this puzzle/game and decided to give it a try. My daughter is absolutely in love. She not only enjoys all the different outfit selections but also has given them names and has created ensembles for their day at the park, birthday party, and "the big dance." It seems like a very durable set thus far and although the shoe pieces are tiny, it comes with so much stuff that it would still be fun even if the shoes managed to get lost. Will definitely be buying similar products down the road!
a great spin on the classic paper doll by Heather J. Ethen "he
My daughter was 18 months old when she got this and loves it. Many pieces, part fo the attraction. The outfits are too cute! And it's eay to clean. Just wipe off.
My toddler loves this set! The clothes are ugly as sin, but she's too young to care. This toy helps my daughter improve dexterity and understand where clothes go on the body. It also gives us an opportunity to talk about the names of clothes, colors, patterns, etc. DD loves to carry the dolls around and play with them just like regular dolls.
I gave this to my daughter for her 5th birthday. We took a trip to Orlando and had a 10 hour car ride, so I thought this would keep her occupied on the way down. She absolutely LOVES this toy. She had so much fun dressing the girls up and having pretend conversations. My only complaint is that there are many tiny little pieces that could possibly get lost. I wish there were some way to keep the pieces corralled a bit better, but overall I would recommend this toy.
Best gift I gave this Christmas by Marchell
I am impressed with all the Melissa and Doug magnates and this one in particular for little girls won everyones hearts. I wish I had gotten a couple more for our other granddaughters. Next year for sure.
Good fun never grows old :) by Mame
My great grandchildren love these paper (wood) dolls. I loved them as a child but the wooden ones are better as they don't wear out. Ony lack is you can't cut them out yourself.
My 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 really enjoyed putting clothes on the dolls. The dolls don't stand very well. It would be a really great toy if it had a lid, the box is so nice. Lots of small pieces, so I have to watch when they play so they don't loose pieces.
Perfect for my four year old! by emmloo
I purchased these for my four year old daughter for Christmas and she really likes playing with them! A great alternative to paper dolls that rip and tear easily. They are pretty durable and the wooden case is perfect for storage when not in use.
So Much Better Than Paper Dolls! by Grenflowr1
My daughter is 2 and received this for her birthday. She hasn't quite gotten the hang of how to "play" dress up yet but she has enjoyed playing with the pieces. I love that the pieces are wooden and magnetic and that the dolls are large with stands. My only complaint is that some of the pieces are SO small. I mean super super small (like the shoes for example) and the box has no lid. It definitely needs a lid or something to keep those small pieces contained.
I like the idea of magnetic dress up dolls. The first problem I have with it is the box. It is such a nice box, but it doesn't have a cover with it. That would be so nice to help keep all the small parts contained. A second problem I have is the shoes that come with it. I kind of wish they weren't there. They are so small that they are easily lost and I worry about my 1 year old getting ahold of them. Maybe if they had the shoes attached to the pants. That might be better. Overall my girls (2 and 4) like the toy and so do I. It is definitely a step up from the paper dress up dolls I used to play with.
Nice dress-up dolls, but how are we suppose to STORE them? by Lisa928
The dress-up dolls themselves are cute, but I like the other "Melissa and Doug Tops and Tights Magnetic Dress-Up" set so much better for the fact that the dolls are double sided as well as it comes with a bag. This set has so many small parts and although it comes with a box, the box has no lid. I had to resort to a Ziploc bag and at that point I might as well throw out the box.
Magnetic Paper Dolls by MumsyL
As always, I love Melissa & Doug toys. They are durable and well-made and my granddaughters love them. The only drawback that I see to them is that the boxes do not include a cover. In this case, with the magnetic paper dolls, the clothes fall on the floor and can be lost easily. Besides that one complaint, I love everything else about this product.
fun & easy toy for young girls by jacindaChicago
these dolls are fun and easy for young girls to dress up on their own. I gave it as a Christmas gift to a 2 1/2 year old girl. there are small pieces (like little shoes) but this particular child doesn't put EVERYTHING in her mouth and she loves this toy so far. however, I'm afraid the pieces will all be quickly lost... it would be nice if there was some sort of cover to go over the nice wooden box it all comes in.
A lot for your money by JMN "Bargain-seeker"
Out of all the Melissa and Doug magnetic dress-up sets my daughter has, this is by far the nicest. A lot of them come with one doll and accessories...this one comes with two dolls and lots and lots of outfits. I just love these sets - a modern version of paper dolls. Truly unique.
My one complaint is that the sets are hard to store as there is no 'lid' for them after you've taken off the plastic wrap they come in. This is fairly minor but still a pain as I've not found a good way to organize them yet.
Lots of Toy for the Money! by Kara T.
I personally love toys that multiple kids can play with at one time. This is definitely one of those toys. With two dolls to dress and tons of clothing options, multiple kiddies can play with this at once (which is great when you have a few around that want to play at the same time). The different options are really cute, and are helping my young daughter understand the words and different clothing pieces. Very happy I bought this and play on purchasing others as gifts. Pieces are sturdy, and I like that it comes in a wooden box with divided sections that really help to keep pieces together. I store this in a XL ziploc so nothing falls out or gets lost.
Perfect version of paper dolls for young ones by Bonnie Dickson
I first saw this set at my niece's house. She has two little girls who really enjoy playing with it. I immediately ordered it for my house for when my grandchildren come over. They were here this weekend and loved it. It is sturdy and easy to use. The clothes are magnetic with the two girl figures in the set and so are easy to put on and off. No frustrating tabs.
