Great deal for beginners! by A. Rhode
My friends and I just started playing Magic recently and we're all hooked.
If you're just learning Magic, the first thing I recommend buying an intro deck from whatever the latest core set is (currently M11). There are a lot of rules and I think it's important to learn on a deck that's designed to function cohesively. If you are happy just having a deck to play with, then that's all you need.
After that, if you are at all interested in building decks or experimenting with different play styles, I definitely recommend getting this kit. From a value perspective, it comes with 4 boosters, which by themselves are worth at least $12, and then you get a storage box with room for extra cards, which is worth a another couple of bucks, so the cards are basically free.
It gives you a bunch basic cards to start putting together decks and try out different play styles. The decks probably wouldn't satisfy experienced players, but it's plenty for learning the ins and outs of how the different colors work. If that's what you're interested in, this is an economical way to get there.
This kit does come with a pamphlet on deck building, but it's not very detailed. I found this article to be really helpful:

285 Magic Cards for $20? SOLD! by Capt. John
What's not to like? That they're the 2011 series and not 2012? Are you playing in State-level or National Tournaments? No? Then that really doesn't matter. Yes? Then why are you even reading the Reviews? You already know if you want this.
For the unitiated it's 100 Land Cards (used to Summon Creatures and Cast Spells) 125 Common & Uncommon cards (your Creatures and Spells), and four 15-card Boosters with random Lands and Spells, and maybe, just maybe, possibly, an Ultra, Mega, Super Rare Foil card! SCORE!!!.
And a cardboard box.
Hey, don't laugh! It's a solid, durable, closeable box, big enough to hold several deck boxes. Okay, so it doesn't come with spare deck boxes (unlike the Fat Packs, which have less cards and are twice the price), but you're getting 285 Magic Cards for $20. That's just 7
Great starter toolkit for a beginner or to have spares. by Farelle Flores
The MTG Deckbuilders Toolkit is a great way for new or veteran players to create a useful deck, have many spare cards for existing decks, or get extra mana (land). Each box contains cards that are similar to other toolkits and it is pretty unlikely you will find mythic rares (if at all, I haven't). There are also some randomized cards in there, so you don't always get the same thing with each box. You also get a large amount of basic land (mana), so if you have started with boosters like I did this is SO helpful! Comes with a pamphlet on building decks and more than enough cards for you to make a deck good enough to win! Stick with boosters if you want to discover mythic rares, but for beginners and deck building this one is perfect (and at a great price too).

Great product (thus the 4 star review), but you're not really saving buying it here. It is $19.99 at virtually every Wal-Mart, K-Mart, or Target. Just some practical info for you.
loved this 'toolkit' by caushuper
just what my son and I needed to build decks -- plenty of cards -- including current cards -- lots of land -- and clear, thoughtful directions in how to build a set. Workds well as a 2-person "Starter Kit" or to supplement what you already have. Definitely worth it!
Readers are leaders by David C. Guggenheim
I gave this to my young nephew (who is about 7). He is slow to learn to read so I thought the fun and exciting pictures would encourage him to want to play the game and thus learn to read the cards. So far he likes them a lot. hopefully it will lead to a long life of reading and casting magic spells
Way more cards then expected. by Igotthemagicstick
I must say I am impressed. I am a beginner at magic and wanted to get a lot of cards without spending much money, so I bought this. I expected 258 cards to be a small amount but when all these cards got here I was amazed. I had enough cards to build a deck of each color and with the help of some friends I made a deck that was pwnage. I also got a mythic rare.
A Great Introduction to Magic: The Gathering by Robert Gamble
A few years ago I reviewed a starter set for Magic: The Gathering which was wholly unsuitable for learning the game. This product is, however, just about perfect for both a new player, and an experienced player looking to start up a group.
It comes with:
1. Enough land to play almost any normal 60 card deck. It may not have quite enough for a monocolored 60 card deck, but if it's a monocolored deck, you can always say that your islands are actually mountains.
2. A lot of good staples in both commons and uncommons show players some of the best simple cards made for the game.
3. Perhaps the best part is that due to the semi-random nature of the toolkits, the designers have made sure to create a few different 'archetypes' rather than just a random sampling of cards where making a theme deck would be difficult. A new player could try a big creature green deck, a mana ramp deck, a black discard deck, a red direct damage deck, a combat tricks - small creature white deck, etc... Additionally, since each theme isn't present in every deck builder's toolkit, if two new players have separate toolkits, they can be surprised by what the other person has.
4. Finally, it includes booster packs, which give the final element of the experience, cracking new cards.
Overall, it's a fine product and for the price is a great value for a new player.
Solid Set and a Good Deck Building Assistant by Lorenzo Bonilla
First off, I like to give extra props to the store for their fast service as my order came a couple of days ahead of the expected due date. When they say fast service, they were not kidding.
As for the Deck Builder Kit, its a pretty handy expansion set. The set consists of four booster packs ( Conflux, Zendikar, Worldwake, and Rise of Eldrazi) and two wrapped card bundles of randomly mixed spell and land cards (125 Spells, 100 Land). The builder ideas and suggestions is mainly a fold-out,no different than what you get in Theme Decks or Fat Packs, but it did help me get a better understanding on how to play with the basic archetypes of Magic Decks and their suggestions on deck types. I managed to build both an Eldrazi Deck and a White/Blue Flyer Deck with other ideas on the horizon.
Plus, how often does a booster pack give you a second Progenitus? That was a fun find as I opened the Conflux booster. Plus the assorted cards give you enough spells and land to help construct and complement your current supply of cards and decks.
I would recommend this kit as a good expansion set and as an addditional card storage box, since the kit works as a deck case as well. Treat this like a fat pack, but as a good starting place for beginners, and a good card expansion set for mid-to advanced players.
Great intro into Magic The Gathering by joesapo
My whole family loves it - fantastic value.
After not playing magic for nearly 10 years, I found that the instructions included in the set were adequate for somebody with at least *some* experience with the game, but might have been daunting for a new player. I would suggest perhaps starting with one of the intro decks instead if you have never played before.
We got a few good rares in the set, and enough cards to make three fairly decent small decks. You are immediately left wanting more cards, but what they provide is truly more than enough for a some good matches.
Great for Starters! by Adammb13
The information included in the toolkit isn't all that great, I personally used the info in the fat packs more. However, the starting cards and all the land cards are VERY useful! This did yield me quite a few rare cards and uncommon cards, with the rest being common.
If you are just starting out and have some money to spend, I suggest purchasing this and the fat pack. You'll be making several different types of decks in no-time. Highly recommended for beginners.
Great instant collection, Highly recommended for beginners! by M. Yoeun "soap"
I just got started with Magic after all these years, playing games like Pokemon, DBZ, and others (I am actually 23 by the way). I can't believe I didn't start sooner and Wizards of the Coast makes it so much more fun with this box of joy. First of all you get over 250 cards with this kit and 4 boosters from various expansion sets before or around M11 core set. I just want to say when I opened this box I was pleasantly surprised at how many combinations of decks I could create. You're immediately hooked up with tons of land cards, and various cards of every color that can suit just about every beginner. Don't think just because this is a deck builder toolkit that it has inferior cards...it actually has some really good stuff. The duplicates are appropriate for what they are and its not excessive at all. The four boosters are just like any other stand alone boosters you see hanging from the shelf at stores. I actually pulled a Koth of the Hammer in one of them, that definitely gave me a SMILE :) . I also have another 2 other Mythic Rares that came with the pack.
Overall, I am very happy with this box cause it also doubles as storage for the cards. I'd suggest any beginner getting into Magic should get this box FIRST because its great value and gives you plenty of options to figure out what play style you like the most.
Good for Beginners & for filling out your decks. by John Langner
This is by far one of the most economical ways of building your MTG card collection.
The Booster Packs included are usually older. Such as Scars or Besieged. However, those packs alone are still worth around 4 dollars a piece. Meaning your getting everything else for around $4. A true steal, considering that you also get a bunch of land and usually some terramorphic expanses or the like that I personally never seem to get otherwise. Making it a great way to replenish your land reserves, and pick up a few extra Giant Growths, Lightning Bolts, ect. that you might not otherwise have enough of for all your decks. Also, due to the diversity of the cards, it will help give new players an idea of whats all out there, and what they can expect. Just keep in mind that you will NOT be getting anything NEW from one of these.
First off, I'd just like to repeat what another reviewer said: Buy these elsewhere. Target, Wal-mart, etc. This is 19.99 everywhere else
That being said, do the math and buy this!
You get 285 cards total for $20, which includes land and 4 booster packs, and 125 semi-randomized cards THAT AREN'T CRAP.
Although they aren't crap, the "semi-randomized" 125 cards are just that. They are a random assortment, but it's the same random assortment from box to box. I found this out because in my enthusiasm, I bought 5. This was the summer of 2010, so I'm not sure if it's more random now, but I seriously doubt it The boosters add enough variety that this shouldn't keep you from buying it as many times as you want.
If you like magic, buy this.
you get 4 booster packs plus 125 commons/uncommons and 100 mana. boosters are usually $4 a piece so you are getting most of your money back there. good for starters and intermediate players getting back into it.
I'm a newcomer to MTG and after buying the M12 Core Fat Pack I bought this Deck Builder as a supplement. Together I was able to make three single color decks (with varying efficiency). For the Price, it's a pretty good deal. I'll definitely end up buying another one. I got lucky on my booster packs and drew out a Jace planeswalker. The box itself could be used for storage, not as nice as a Fat Pack box but it's a good way to store your lands and commons.
Great for having not played in years. by Not too fat for a ca
I use to love magic many years ago. This was great for starting back up again with a couple of friends.
Great Start by John Barrie "Catfish
This product is exactly what it says it is, a starter set. Expecting a pile of Mythic Rares will cause you disappointment, but if you need lots of common and uncommon cards and lands this is a great place to start. And they aren't all dull cards. I got a few lightning bolts and squadron hawks, and lots of other cards I needed, plus the booster packs did have a few nice rare cards, a Carnifex Demon and a Sword of Vengeance and a Stormtide Leviathan. If you are an experienced player you're probably better off with a Fat Pack of the newest set or buying individual cards from game shops or trading card websites, but other than that I can't think of a single negative thing to say.
this product is amazing 285 cards comes in a box which you can store your cards, good condition also the booster packs gave me a BANESLAYER angel so all the other cards were basically free I am a beginner and i got lots of good other cards lots of land managed to build three decks awesome package altogether I forgot to mention the shipping too it came one day earlier than the expected time nice!
No Worldwake boosters. by Chris Samuel "moycon
I'm a huge Magic fan and this kit comes with some nice stuff. Anyone familiar with Magic will see the benefits of the kit as a whole just from the content, but a nice thing about the box is it will hold your Ultra Pro deck boxes and regular deck boxes perfectly so you can keep them all together in a convenient carry box smaller than a Fat Pack box.
BE AWARE the kit I received 3/31/11 does NOT contain a Worldwake booster like these kits used to. I'm guessing because of the hot Jace card there is a Worldwake booster shortage. Just FYI.
A total deal - great for beginning to intermediate players! by Book Maven
This is possibly the best deal on Magic cards around! I read several reviews and they all seemed to point to this purchase. My boyfriend and I recently got into Magic The Gathering as a great way to have fun, use our brains and not spend too much money going out all the time. I bought a 2011 Core deck (Reign of Vampirism) but wanted to play with many options, so I bought this as well. At my local comic book store, booster packs are $4, and a deck is about $12-13. This kit saves you TONS of money! $16 worth of boosters, enough cards for at least three very well-thought out decks (and plenty of spares to trade or rotate into your decks), plus the handy guide for building a deck and a card box (I constantly tote my cards on the subway and through winter city streets, so this box is a savior)!
My deck came with enough white to have a cohesive all-white deck, a deck's worth of green (but I made the deck stronger by making it green/red), almost a full deck's worth of red, but was a little light on blue and black, which are my fave colors. No worries - the cards I got were good enough to make a kick-butt blue/black deck! In all, I was very pleased with the cards I got. My bf's roommate has been playing for more than a decade and he said that I have some really good decks now, which made me really happy with the value of this kit - and its deck-building advice! Since he's advanced, I can safely say that people through the intermediate level will find something of value here. Definitely cards you can win with!
The deckbuilding foldout was handy, but I wish it had gone into more detail, especially about what types of cards to put into a control deck. However, I'm sure there are tons of articles I can find online about this, so no big deal.
In all, this is a great deal! I won't have to buy cards for a very long time! I do think it's a good idea to have a core set to begin with so you can learn to play with a cohesively designed deck and get the feel for what kinds of cards work well together, but right after that, GET THIS!
Holla to all my people rocking Magic!
Its a good start by Travis McCray
I have played some magic before, and was looking to get back into the game. This was perfect for me, I was able to build 3 distinct decks, and even could combine two of them to make a 4th total. I am very satisfied with the package, the box is nice and thick, has great art on the outside, and as others have said, has extra space for other cards you buy. I highly recommend this package to any one with little to no experience. Possibly even medium players, the "semi-random" cards were not terrible, and you get lands and some booster packs.
Great Variety by >
You get a ton of awesome cards from this box for a great deal. I bought it because i just started playing with my friend. After I bought it I made a Red/Black deck, and beat my friend for the first time. I then made two more decks, one White/Blue and one Green. They all have awesome cards in each type. If your a first timer like me, it walks you through how to play and how to make decks. Go get it if you are a first timer or an expert.
Absolutely fantastic. by C. I. Campbell
The Deckbuilder's Toolkit is great. It gives you tons of extra lands, a good many uncommon cards, and a good mix of different color common cards. Not only do you get all that, but you get four booster packs. The kit I got had boosters from Conflux, Worldwake, 2010 Core Set, and Zendikar (I don't know if every toolkit has these same boosters or not). I even got a mythic rare in one of my boosters. Overall it's great if you're just starting out or if you've been collecting for a while.

Amazing shipping rate: SO FAST by Jonccummins09
Was thoroughly impressed with how fast this order came: Within twoish days of putting in the order. This Deck Builders toolkit is a MUST for anyone interested in starting Magic. Very Detailed instructions on how to play, and it doesn't lie you get and instant collection of cards between the packaged cards and booster packs inside. I highly recommend this product to beginners and newbies.
Couldnt stop smiling by Adam.Marines
When i received this box, and opened, then sorted all the cards, i couldn't stop smiling. Sure, they were mostly commons, but there were some powerful ones, and a lot that i have never seen. i dont think it stated this, but it came with one rare and one ultra rare. i am very happy with this product.
Builder's Tip by ShadeSaratoga
I bought the tool builder's kit to just add to my collection and that's exactly what I got. There wasn't really anything really eye popping in the box. There's about 100 lands and the rest common and uncommon cards. There maybe some rares but not that many. You could build a desk out of the cards you get, but it would require quite a bit of work to make it really good. I would recommend this box if a person is just starting..or if they are just trying to build up their collection.
Really good deal to start playing Magic (or return to it after 10 years) by David M. Robbins "Bi
My friends and I started playing Magic again after a since-high-school hiatus, and this pack really did a good job at providing a ton of land cards and commons to start our decks off with. Note that the cards are 'semi random', which means they are probably the same if you were to buy two deck builders toolkits, but are otherwise great if you don't have many cards yet.
There are also 4 booster packs included in the kit, which in themselves are worth the cost of the kit. They are not the most modern set but for a casual player that should make no difference.
The included card box is also well made and will keep your growing collection from spilling out under the couch.
I think they delivered this by horseback, took more then two weeks and packaging was damaged. The cards all around are good only comes with 21 of each land card or you could almost make 5 decks with it. All the cards are really unfocused don't work well together but it did have some good cards of all colors and is a good card boost for the price. Very good starter collection.
I was a little hesitant at first with ordering this kit. 285 cards for only 18 dollars? A little sketchy, if you ask me.
Here's the rundown of what you get:
1.) 100 basic lands:
-20 Forests
-20 Plains
-20 Islands
-20 Swamps
-20 Mountains
2.) 4 Booster packs with a rare and a holographic card. (Full of 15 cards each).
3.) 125 other misc. cards.
4.) An epic storing box.
Is it worth it? For a beginner, absolutely. You can definitely make at least two decent decks with this kit. You're not going to have every card you ever need, but to start, or to press your luck to see if you can get some epic cards, it's worth it. The cards vary with every kit, so there's not much to say there, but you do get random rare cards thrown in there. They are all mint quality as well. For only 18 dollars, what have you got to loose?
Great but, incomplete by Zetzteno
This id have to admit was an awesome product but there some problems I had. The cards that came with it could only make semi-decent decks. Id recommend purchaceing a Constructed deck or two so you can use it the tool kit to upgrade it. Also the box is somewhat flismy and is just very cheap.(But what can you expect for 20$?)Id rather use a deck box to hold my cards or perhaps a binder. But other than that It's great and makes you want to buy even more cards as quicklyy as you can.
I bought this for my boyfriend since he plays Magic of the Gathering, he loved it. Its the quickest way to get a lot of cards fast.
And oddly enough I received this as a gift, exactly this, from a family member. I really like it. I love the art on the cards, so detailed. I also am excited to learn how to play so I can play against my boyfriend. Thank you.
Highly recommended starter kit by GoMariners
This toolkit includes many uncommon and some rare cards as well. This is a great way to start a collection and there are many 7/7 cards. The cards are very useful for building really good decks. I highly recommend this as a gift for children starting out.
This deck builders kit is pretty fantastic. Come with 4 random boosters, enough land for 4+ decks depending on how they are set up. Just starting playing about a month ago and can't stop. This was a huge help, gave me alot of cards i didn't have, and also gave me multiples of useful cards. Definitely worth it, the booster packs alone are usually somewhere around 3 for 10 dollars, but in this you get 4. Those 4 and the other cards it comes with is an awesome deal. Me and two of my friends bought these within a week of each other because they saw how worth it it was.
Great way to start or get back into magic by Da Braddah "Da Bradd
I use to play magic when I was younger and now after being away for over 10 years I got nostalgic for the past and started magic again. This deck was a great way to see some of the newer cards out there, and it comes with plenty of mana to build different decks. I wouldn't recommend this being the only thing to buy if you want to build a well made deck but it is a great place to start. I also made the mistake of buying 2 boxes and ended up with pretty much the exact same cards in both boxes, but the price was so cheap plus I put the boxes(which had great art work of the planewalkers) to good use so I didn't feel so bad.
The Basics of Magic by Richard Reisig
I bought this for a young friend of mine. This has everything a youngster needs to get started in Magic. At least that is what I was told by the expert kids in the neighborhood. The kids teach each other how to play so The instructions on how to play in the box don't really matter. I gave this product 5 stars for educational value because it helps kids to think by making them plan and strategize.
Toolkit is good. by D. Glackin
Not an educational toy.
Sure it has a rulebooks thing in it, but that is just for the magic game, not education. Nice and wide box for the cards so that you can put them in with sleeve protectors and still pull them out without having to tip the thing over. Plenty of cards in it, got some real nice ones from mine. Plenty of land, can never have enough land when making our own decks. The other cards not in the 'booster packs' were still sort of incredible to find some of the things they had put in there. It is still worth while to buy things like the toolkit's for boxes for your cards because of the extra stuff you'll find hidden within it.
Good if you need the basics by xpop89
This set will help you begin playing magic. If you already have a card collection or are going to buy many packs from the recent core set, I wouldn't reccommend buying this.
Everything you need to get started playing Magic the Gathering by armytech8098
I bought this set on a whim to bulk up my collection. The box arrived and I was very pleased with the contents. I now have a VERY good start on a lot of different themed decks. Please note that there are little to no rare cards (except what comes in the four unopened packs) but what you do get are a LOT of very important cards you can use to build from. Again, nothing special, but most of these cards are the bread and butter of a lot of decks. This box will not be all you need to get into tournament play, but it is a great start in that direction. If you already have a lot of cards then you probably aren't looking for this set. If you are just getting started, this is a good way to go. Lots of versitility and entertainment.
Excellent for beginners by Anson Brehmer
I'm a veteran player getting back into the game after a couple years away, and I picked one of these babies up to help teach Magic to some of my friends. It contained enough cards to make at least three good decks, and the deckbuilding tips pamphlet had some useful advice for newbies building decks of their own for the first time. Once I was done with my teaching exercise, I also had enough current Standard-Legal cards to build a deck I wouldn't feel embarrassed showing up with at the local Friday night Magic store.
expand you collection by apidone
the magic the gathering deck builders toolkit offers players more than 200 magic cards to work with in there deck building, but don't expect any rares (outside from the four booster packs you get). Beginning players should practice with starter decks before getting the toolkit and expert players may find the lack of rare or powerful cards disappointing, but for the intermediate players is a must have. this toolkit give players steps on how to make your own deck and 11 possible deck ideas and strategist. if you need more cards for your collections or want to work with new cards this is for you.
Good for beginners or people returning to the game. by Dogmatik
If you are new to Magic or just getting back into it this is a good way to update yourself. It comes with enough lands to satisfy any combo of decks you may be wanting to create, as well as a good spread of common and uncommon creatures to act as a foundation to any new decks you create. It also comes with one booster from each of the recent editions, so these can help individualize your deck, you won't be getting a great deal of rares or extremely powerful cards, but this is a launching pad, not an instant tournament winner in a box. The physical box itself is also quite nice, sturdy and durable, it can easily hold 5-6 full decks. Also included in the box are a "how to play" guide, which is good if you are just starting out; and a "Deck Builders Guide," which can be very helpful if you are just starting out or returning to the game, but also is a good way to pick up a few tips for veterans, the guide is not a reason to but this, but it is nice to have.
Great Value by DEMO
This toolkit is great for any deckbuilder no matter the age or experience. I was able to build multiple decks with this toolkit, to include a red and blue burn and control deck, a green elf deck, and very good beginnings for a phenomenal custom vampire deck. Although 100 lands are a bit much for experienced players, the four boosters more than make up for it. A great buy all around and would recommend to any deck builder.
Really good by Joshua Horowitz
This is a really good starter box for Magic. You'll get enough cards to make 5 simple, single color decks. The box could have used just a few more lands of each color, but other than that, it's great.
Great Set! by Tyler
I fell in love with this set as soon as I opened it. It's everything you would ever need to get introduced to Magic. It includes 2 very detailed explanations on every part of the card, and more. Perfect for newcomers. It even goes as far as to tell you what some Magic terms mean. (Such as "Tapping" a card, for example.) It also comes with a thick packet of land cards, as well as 2 other packets of randomized non-land cards. They are very thick and I would say run around 65-100 in each. To add on to that, it comes with 4-5 booster packs, with 15-16 cards in each to add on.
Overall, I would say that this package is perfect for newcomers to Magic, and even more experienced ones considering how many cards come with the set. I would HIGHLY recommend it.
5/5
Its good for new players to the complex yet addictive world of magic. You get land, some cards, and 4 booster packs.
AWESOMESAUCE by Sarah E. Greenberg
This is by far the best investment I've ever made when it comes to Magic the Gathering. For the price of three to four booster packs, I get 100 mana, two fully formed decks and four booster packs. The best part? They don't hold out with the ultra rares ;]
great for beginners by michael
This box set is perfect for a beginner like myself. i previously collected these cards as a way to admire the art and 7 years later bought this item to actually learn how to play and build a decent deck. i was able to build 2 great decks and 1 monocolored deck with ease. a great buy for a product of this stature. will buy another soon once i get the hang of this deck building routine. the added boosters provided me with a few mythic rares. very satisfied.
