Great toy! by S. Leigh Whitaker "G
My daughter got this for her birthday (3 years old). Even though she is not old enough yet to really count the money she has had a blast "ringing things up" on the scanner and paying with the credit card. She also really likes the coin slot. When she puts the money in it tells her what the coin was. She has done this over and over again. She is also having fun going around the house collecting items in her shopping cart and then ringing them up.
I can see this being a toy she will play with for many years. It has math games that seem like they will be fun and educational. Very nice, oh, and my dad observed that the coin slot works with real coins too!
The negatives... The drawer shoots out quickly and the plastic coins tend to slosh out. Also the weighing tray comes off easily. I'm going to put that away till my daughter gets a little older.
Overall- a great toy!
Best toy register I've seen! by M. Whitmore
I got this cash register for my daughter when she started learning about money at school. She is 8 now and still loves playing "store" with her 5 yr. old brother. We've had it well over a year and haven't even had to replace batteries yet. It is durable and fun. The electronic voice is very easy to understand and all the buttons function as they should. I highly recommend this toy.
Fun and Learning by Two Boys and a Girl
Bought this for my 5 year old. Both he and my 7 year old have enjoyed playing with it. They especially like the silly things it does, like sometimes telling them their credit card has been declined, etc. Seems well constructed and has some good learning games, too.
Unfortunately, I wasted a little bit (or more) of money this holiday season. I'm glad to say that this particular toy was absolutely NOT a waste. I had the older model for my older kids, but got rid of that one when they outgrew it. Remembering how much they enjoyed playing with it (we even used it for our garage sale), I bought this one for my youngest daughter, who is four.
This is an excellent cash register! It comes with a lot of play money and provides hours of learning fun. Really, my daughter just loves playing store, scanning items, using her "Kroger Card" and the credit card. She enjoys hearing the machine say "Credit Approved" (or declined!), and she loves putting the coins in the coin slot and having the register recognize which coin it was.
This cash register has many more features than the older one (which I truly liked), and that adds to the play value, I suppose, especially for a younger child. There are some simple math games on this one, too, but the games are really geared to kids just a bit older than 4.
However, my daughter has only had this for 2 days and she has already started to grasp some money concepts that she didn't have before. We've gone over coin values and she's undertanding that the paper money has different values, as well-- although we really haven't begun to go over that. And, interestingly enough, she's asked about some of the figures on the bills and the coins. She's especially interested in Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln.
This is a great toy. And, as I mentioned before, it really does work as a cash register, as well. So, you can use it for simple sales such as garage sales, lemonade stands, etc.
Not a good experience by Mother of 2
This toy only comes w/coins and paper bills - nothing to scan w/the scanner, and nothing to weigh on the scale. I went to the company's website to see if a separate purchase was required, and nothing was listed. The directions were no help - they seem to imply that the items to scan come w/the unit. To top it off, the toy wouldn't respond to the buttons pressed. The instructions say to press the reset button when the unit acts up, which was strangely not installed anywhere on this toy. After fiddling w/it for awhile, we got the math games to work, but inconsistently, and the toy leaves no room for open ended, imaginative play if a child can't use the scanner or scale. The kids got bored really quickly w/just the number identification and math games. We were really looking for a toy w/more creative options.
2 BROKEN AND TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE by AWM
I normally don't write reviews, but felt I had to with this one. We bought this cash register for my 3 year old nephew a few years ago, and he and my daughter, who is 2 years younger, loved to play with it (incidentally, his is still working). So, we finally bought one for my daughter for her 3rd birthday. The first one came out of the box broken. The Open key did not work, and we couldn't get the drawer open. So, we sent it back to Amazon and they replaced it fairly quickly (it was within the 30 day return window). This was back in November. Well, about a month ago #after 8 months or so of use, the cash register just stopped working. Swapped the batteries out and pressed the reset button (which was not where the book said it would be - next to the scanner - it was on the bottom of the machine), and still nothing. I called Amazon to try to get another one - mind you, my 3rd cash register - and they said it was beyond the 30 day return policy and I would have to call corporate. Well, I have called customer service now 5 times, since mid-August. 1st three times, they said they'd send a message to "Corporate" and someone would call back. Not one call back. The fourth time, I finally got a supervisor involved who then gave me a contact over at Corporate. This contact said she'd look into the contract they have with Amazon and call me back. That was on Sept. 2nd, and still no call back. So, yes this toy is a lot of fun and educational, but only if it works. And, if it breaks, good luck trying to get a replacement after 30 days, unless you have idle time to be wasting making phone calls to Learning Resources. Terrible, terrible customer service. Feel like this is my only recourse at this point - to let people know about my bad experience.
**UPDATE - JULY 21, 2011** - I probably should have done this long ago, but I forgot that I wrote this review. I did finally end up getting a new cash register after harassing Learning Resources corporate yet another time. It's unfortunate that I had to go through all I did to finally get another restister. Incidentally, this cash register, which has taken a beating from my (now) 2 children, is still going strong and gets a ton of use.
Sadly disappointed by W. Kuebert
My child loves to play with the toy at a friend's house. Unfortunately, the cash drawer stuck on the first one we received. Amazon exchanged it - no problem. The second one arrived and I played with the coin recognition feature before giving it to my child. I noticed it was not 100% accurate in naming the coin I inserted. I went very slowly to give it time to answer before putting in the next coin. So I returned the 2nd one. I'm not sure if we just had bad luck and got 2 bad ones; I was unwilling to try a 3rd. This product has great features and my child loves it, but I wasn't willing to risk confusing her. Amazon however has won my loyalty with their quick exchange and acceptance of my final return.
Great toy for little kids... very satisfying by DJ Joe Sixpack
If your kid is into "playing store" and handling money, this is a fine cash register toy. It has a calculator/sound card component that uses batteries, but they are not absolutely necessary. Even without batteries, the drawer will still open and a coin slot still works (with a very satistfying spring-action device that chucks the plastic coins into a holding tray...) With the AAs plugged in, though, you get plenty of ding-ding-chingg stimuli, as well as math-game options that may be quite rewarding for kids who are ready for arithmetic. The age range is pretty wide for this toy, and different kids at different developmental levels can get a lot out of it. My only complaint: the synthetic voice that calls out,"Play With Me!" when you leave it alone for a while, and then signs off when you really quit. Other than that, this is pretty spiffy.
Disappointing product by S. Gates "cannondale
My 5-year-old daughter enjoyed playing with this cash register - while it lasted. For one thing, the cash drawer always sprang open too forcefully, depositing coins on the floor. Apart from that, the coin-identifying function ceased to work properly after only about a month, i.e. if you inserted a quarter, it would read "10c" - which totally defeated the purpose of teaching children about money! Hitting the re-set button did not solve the problem, unfortunately.
In the end, we had to send the product back to Amazon, who promptly gave us a full refund - thanks Amazon! My daughter was disappointed, but she understood that the product was defective. Maybe Santa will send her a better one this Christmas!
I would be reluctant to purchase anything from Learning Resources again.
I got this for my granddaughter who just turned 3. I thought she might be too young for it but she's fascinated by it! She was every toy under the sun but this is the one that she consistently wants to play with. I had read the reviews before I bought it and was skeptical that it would live up to it's reputation but I was wrong. It was a wise choice, and I highly recommend it.
Love this! by CL
I bought this for my 2 1/2 yr old for Christmas, wanting something she could have fun with but also grow into. It's great, she doesn't understand half of what it does yet but has a blast playing with the money and "scanning" things (it beeps when you swipe anything over the button). I leave it on the setting where it tells you what type of coin you insert and my mom is amazed that her granddaughter already knows the names of each coin! The money of course gets crinkled but there is a lot of it and she likes it because it is real looking. With little ones just be careful that it's a solid toy, she has tried to carry it and it is too heavy/bulky for a 3 yr old to carry, not something really for them to move around on their own.
The ONLY thing that drives me crazy about it is that it says "goodbye" if you stop playing with it, then does it again 5 min later, then 5 min later, finally shutting off. I'm always like "ok, goodbye! Go ahead and shut off already!" Oh, also I wish the door where the coins come out did not have to be closed for it to tell you the coin names because toddlers don't realize they have to close it (then again she's still really young for this toy). Those few things aside, I would buy this again in a heartbeat!
When you use the credit card for this register, it sounds like it's checking your credit. And the money that's included looks like real money and it tells you what denomination is being inserted into the coin bank when inserted. The only problem I've found thus far is that the batteries don't last very long.
My son and I love this register! by K. Murrer
This toy has been a lot of fun. We have been using it heavily for about a week and have not had any issues. Some reviewers mentioned the "CB Open" error. This does not mean that the cash drawer is open. There is a little area under the coin slot that holds coins after you drop them in to be identified. If the door of this "coin box" is not snapped down completely, you will get this error. You just clear out your coins, snap it down, and then keep playing! The money that comes with the register is great, too. My son actually likes it better than real coins. He carries the coins all around the house. He also loves the little credit card.
worked for a few days by ssgmedic
Ours worked for a few days after Christmas. That was it. Followed the directions to reset, just keeps repeating the same thing and no buttons work. Our son is very disappointed.
Didn't work by Maureen B. Mcgurk "m
Ours worked briefly on Christmas morning but stopped soon after that. My husband got it working one more time, but again it stopped working.
Fantastic (especially for older kids) by A. Toomey
I think the manufacturer's age range is more accurate than Amazon's. While a younger child may have fun stuffing the coin slot with pennies or scanning things, by the time that they are old enough to really use it, they will probably have lost pieces and wrinkled the dollars. Not that they couldn't use it, but this is really geared towards older kids.
This will appeal to an older kid because of its many functions. There is a process to checking out, and the machine is able to calculate totals, discounts from the coupon, do voids, and calculate change. It's very cool.
The only things I dislike about it is that if the coin drawer is not snapped into place, it won't function. The drawer flies open, flinging coins and it encourages youngsters to do the same. The weigh bar is a bit flimsy. It could also use a portable scanner. However, these are small complaints as the rest of the register is solid and complicated enough that it will keep an older child occupied.
Also, it doesn't have Barbies, Thomas or Dora on it, it's completely unisex.
We had the same experience as others, after 15 minutes none of the buttons worked. We pressed reset and changed batteries. We only received the Cash Box Open statement. Do not buy this toy.
Big Hit, Even With Older Cousins by rosaline
This was purchased for my daughter for her Birthday which falls 3 days before Christmas.
She love the toy. I also the LeLearning Resources Cash n' Carry Wallet, Pretend and Play Supermarket Set , Melissa & Doug Shopping Cart, and Melissa & Doug Deluxe Grocery Store / Lemonade Stand to compliment the cash register. It's been shopping time every since.
Even cousins as old as 11 enjoyed playing store.
The cash register LCD lights are bright, the buttons are big, it has help my daughter with recognizing coins.
There are a few drawback with the toy.
The drawer shoots out at you and the coins go everywhere. If you have a young child I urge you to supervise them with this cash register it could really do some harm.
Also the drawer only come with 3 spots for currency. And the scale is not accurate nor does it stay on, I glued it to the cash register.
Overall I am pleased with the puchase.
Pro:
Durable - It's been dropped several times and continues to work
Clear numbers on the LCD screen
Coin reader really identifies real and fake coins
Real size currency and coins
Powers down on it's own
Cons:
Loud
Cash register drawer shoots out with a lot of power
Only has 3 drawers for currency (so there is no place for the 10's and 20's)
Scale not accurate and the top falls off
Daughter loved it but... by M. Russell
In the process of returning it to Amazon because the drawer kept sticking. Will probably order another one. 3 year old daughter anxiously awaiting her cash register.
A wonderful toy with one flaw... by David Dressler
We bought this for my youngest daughters, who are ages 3 and 4. They LOVE it; in fact, we have video footage of the two of them screaming in rage at each other as they fight over who gets to use it first! The fact that they don't usually do this is a tribute to how much fun it is.
The only problem we have encountered is that the entire register stops functioning if the "coin bank" door is ajar. Unfortunately, the machine determines whether it is open by way of a very small and fragile tab. It got stuck in the open position 3 days after we bought it, and I had to fix it with a flathead screwdriver (the tab is blue, located on the left side of the coin bank). Obviously, it is possible that we received a defective cash register, and everyone else's will work fine.
The perfect educational toy by Prinado
Huge applause to Learning Resources for producing the very best educational toy in my 2.5 year old's collection. We picked up a market set similar to the Play Wonder Mini Market Set and prop store items as well, which really helps stage a realistic 'checkout' experience. She loves to play cashier, scan and bag items, collect payment and return change. Now, when we go to the supermarket, she studies the cashier's every move and applies it to her next play session.
The developers applied great attention to realism and detail in this product to ensure that kids can grow into the features as they mature and learn. When a child plugs a coin (either the included play coins or a real coin) into a coin slot, a voice identifies each coin. My 2.5 year old can now identify real coins-from pennies to quarters-by sight. And thanks to the cash register, my daughter understands the basics of payment systems--she realizes that a credit card and cash are used in exchange for goods. When we're shopping, she enjoys handing my cash or credit card to the cashier and studying the transaction.
Its the features that my daughter doesn't yet understand that really make this product an excellent investment. It includes several exercises and games that help teach basic math skills (heck, I even enjoy playing them). The depth and detail in the simulation is excellent, and really elevates this product way beyond any other 'toy' cash register. The scanner works very well (it even 'scans' stuffed animals to my daughter's delight) and verbalizes a random price. Every so often, it will throw in a discounted or closeout price. When the child hits the 'checkout' button, the voice asks 'cash or charge?' If the child scans a credit card, one hears a modem connect sound before receiving a verbal approval. Interestingly, many of the responses are heard infrequently (such as a declined credit card!), which really keeps the experience fresh even after weeks of play.
Negatives? The drawer shoots open in the blink of an eye, which scared the crap out of my daughter, me, and the family dog the first time it happened. Not a big deal, though for such an excellent product. Very highly recommended.
Awesome learning toy by Jigsaw
This item was a great learning toy, yet lots of fun for the kids. It really helps identify the coin. It tells you how much change you need to return, which makes the kids add the coins. The scanner just simply scans the item and places a random price on it. No bar codes or anything needed. The family really enjoys the product.
Cash register not child-friendly by G. Anderson
You can't turn the register off, you just have to wait the 5 minutes of inactivity for it to automatically shut off. And there are different buttons to push to select different games, only one of them works, coin quiz. On level 2 of that game, it gives you an amount and you have to put various coins in to equal that amount. You'd think it would acknowledge when you got to that amount, but it does nothing. You press enter and it does nothing. If you put more in it tells you that you are wrong, but then it's too late. What a disappointment!
Does not work properly by Tricia (Mom of 2)
Bought this product twice thinking that the first product must have been defective. When the second register arrived, we had the same experience. The buttons would not respond to anything. The reset button and new batteries did not resolve the problem. Very disappointed ... the register had alot of good features but they do not work ... twice!
A GREAT GIFT!! by EDUCATING MOM
WE ACTUALLY PURCHASED A DIFFERENT CASH REGISTER FOR MY 3 1/2 YEAR OLD SON, BUT RETURNED IT AFTER MY SON PLAYED WITH THIS ONE AT A FRIEND'S HOUSE. IT HAS A LOT OF GREAT FEATURES THE OTHER ONE DIDN'T HAVE, ALTHOUGH MOST ARE TOO ADVANCED FOR MY SON'S AGE. HE ENJOYS IT ON THE BASIC LEVEL FOR NOW AND WILL SURELY ENJOY IT AS HE GET OLDER AND BETTER AT MATH.
My daughter loves this toy. However, my husband and I do not. The thing turns on randomly. It wakes us up in the middle of the night saying "welcome" and no matter what we do, we can not get it to stay OFF! I believe it has something to do with the drawer not closing properly, which makes it think that someone is playing with it. If this cash register had an ON/OFF switch we would give it 5 stars.
Fun for pretend paly, and educational by Roosevelt "Eleanor"
THere are many toy cash registers in the market, and I am so glad I purchased this one, even if for the heaftier price of $39. Both my daughters 3 and 7 are having fun playing with it, but my 7 year old is also learning about money/change with it.
When you ring the "bill" up, you can enter a total amount (e.g. $15) and when you select payment it will ask you whether it will be cash or charge. If you select cash, you then input the amount handed to you by the customer (e.g. $20) and it will tell you how much change the customer is due (i.e. $5). If you select credit, you run the credit card by the card slot, and it makes fun noises to check whether it's approved or not, and finally approves the charge. You can also put coins through another slot and it will tell you the value of each denomination.
Another feature is that you can use it as a calculator, or as a game for addition/subtraction. So many uses, with fun all over.
If you are buying this for a young child, say 2-4, some of the less expensive models will do, but if you want it to be something he/she can grow into and learn from, this looks like a pretty durable toy to last a few years.
The best Christmas gift! by Karen S.
My 5 year old daughter received this toy as a Christmas gift and it has been the hit of the holidays!! She loves to scan items from all over the house because it will give everything a random price. It has realistic sound effects too!
I love the fact that it is teaching her to identify coins when it asks her to put in a penny, nickel, dime or quarter. When she puts in the correct coin, a positive phrase is said and the game keeps going. When she chooses the wrong coin, it will ask her to put in the right one. Even my 9 year old daughter loves to play store with this cash register! It also comes with a pretend credit card, coupon card and paper money.
Although my daughter received many wonderful gifts for Christmas, this is the one she plays with the most!
My 6 1/2 year old loves it!!! by T. Francis "tarheel
My daughter got this for Christmas and she loves it. I'm a little bit surprised that it's advertised as ages 3 and up. My 6 year old loves it. She is in first grade and is starting to work with money so she can actually make change and do lots of the activities by herself. I don't know that younger kids would get so much out of it. Of course, it does make lots of beeping noises so I'm sure 3-4 year olds like that part. We definitely think this is a great product!
My husband and I bought this for our three grandchildren for Christmas. It is one of their favorite presents. The two year old loves to open and close the drawer, push the buttons, and put change in the slot. The four and a half year olds love to play store and are now getting interested in the games. They are really enjoying learning to add. A very well-made, fun, educational toy.
Great item! by Kelly Keefer "Romans
We got this for our four year old for Christmas. It was a huge hit with my 8, 11 and 14 year old as well! It truely grows with the child. I was amazed at what it could do. Seems to hold up well. A very good investment.
This is a great learning toy. My granddaughter just entered kindergarten and she can easily handle level 1 of some of the games. She is learning the difference between the various coins (penny, nickel, dime, quarter). The only "flaw" I see is that when you OPEN the cash drawer, the play money literally "flies" out. I am trying to teach her to hold one hand on the drawer without pushing in and that way she can buffer the impact.
Overall, i would definitely recommend it as a toy for children 5 or over.
Granddaughter loved it! by Grandma
We gave this to our granddaughter for her 3rd birthday. She was thrilled and plays with it a lot. Her cousin loved it when he saw her open it so he will be getting one for Christmas. They love playing store and this helps make it so much more realistic.
Fun and learning! by Mary E. Durkin
I researched many toy cash registers for my three year old granddaughter, and the Learning Resources came out ahead in every area (ease of use , durability, wide range of uses, educational, and most of all fun!) I can not believe that she is doing simple math already. This toy grows with the child's interest, the built in calculator got her going and now she is figuring out adding and subtracting on her own. Great purchase!
Disappointed by AJZ
We purchased and returned this twice. The buttons eventually don't work and it then becomes defective. I would advise against purchasing this product.
So much fun the kids don't realize they are learning. by Lisa C. Kurtz
I purchased this cash register after seeing it at the Long Island Children's Museum. My grandson loved playing with it when we were there.
It teaches the kids to recognize the different coins, teaches them the names of the coins, how to add, subtract, etc.
My grandson just turned two and he now knows the name of all the coins.
a hit with the grandkids! by Jennifer
I gave this toy to my grandchildren 4 & 2 over the Thanksgiving holiday to play with.
The 4 year old was trilled with the concept of having 'money". The 2 year old just like to press all the buttons and hear the sounds.Their parents liked the idea of learning about money, addition and subtraction in this fun way.Very educational toy providing hours of fun play for the kids. A +
My daughter loves her cash register by Fall Leaf "M."
This is a toy that my daughter loves now, but it will continue to grow with her. she is only 3 and does not understand the value of money, but when she does she will get a lot of enjoyment out of the games. She loves the coin slot and the spring-loaded drawer.
So far it has been quite durable. We have had no problems with it yet. I like the auto-off feature so that it doesn't run the batteries down.
I love the fact that you can use real coins and bills as well as the pretend ones that are provided. I have found the feature where it tell you the denomination of the coin as you put it in the slot to be accurate. The only caution is to not fill the drawer too full with real coins as it is a bit heavy for the drawer to open easily.
This Learning Resources Cash Register has been on my Grandsons mind since he saw it and played with it at a toy store last year.
It made a great gift for his 5th birthday.
He loves the way the toy talks to him as he scans in the shoppers groceries and weighs the produce. The register actually tells him the value of the coins as he adds them. This is a great teaching toy that I think will 'grow' with him as he gets older.
Learning Resources actually has 2 different toy cash registers, the other one is solar powered and this one takes 3 C batteries. We debated over which one to buy and decided on this one based on comments from other reviewers, and the fact that he actually saw and played with this particular model -- and loved it. You can easily tell the 2 registers apart by looking for the yellow produce scale on the top right hand side of the register -- that's the one we purchased.
The toy appears to be a sturdy design and 'kid-friendly'. If the kids don't push the shut-off button, the register automatically shuts itself off after several minutes of non-use to help save battery life.
I think the toy comes with an ample supply of coins and bills, although I'm sure we will need to purchase a replacement pack of money sometime in the future, this toy gets played with often!!
