Perfect toddler laptop--in purple! by L. Kubala "footballg
I just received this in the mail today for my toddler and wanted to include some information for those of you debating a purchase. Here is the information from the booklet about the 3 functions and 3 modes of play:
1. Emails--lets you hear from scout and violet, plus 3 personalized emails chosen by you.
2. Music play list--includes instrumental and lyrical that you chose and download to the leaptop. The sing-along is 1 of 5 songs and and the instrumental lets you select 5 from a list of about 15. The character dances along on the screen.
3. Blog--hear the latest blog entries, personalized with your child's name at the end of each.
4. Alphabet mode--introduces letters and phonics. Hear the letter name and sound, plus an animal that starts with the letter.
5. Music Maker Mode--turns the keyboard into a music station. The paw print makes background beat while the 3 rows are: silly sound effects, percussion sounds, and piano key sounds.
6. Animal Mode--Learn about animals for each letter of the alphabet. Press a letter and hear a clue, the paw print reveals the animal it is.
You can also connect to the leapfrog learning path, something I have not yet explored.
My only complaint so far is the length of time it took to download the program from leapfrog, which was about 15 min. The actual set-up only took about 5 min and was very easy to follow. The laptop itself is a beautiful purple, and the outside is a darker purple than the inside, the same color as the keys. There is an off switch with a low and high volume. It also has a standby mode when it has a period of inactivity, to save battery life. It takes 3 AA batteries. The hinged screen is secure, where it won't shut on its own, but not so secure that it can't be closed easily. It is very lightweight and has a handle at the top, perfect for a toddler to carry around. The leaptop is about 9 inches from side to side, small but not too tiny. The mouse, which slides up and down, is used to select the modes. Unlike the laptop other retailers carry in which the mouse can move all directions, the simplicity of this one is perfect for small children. The bottom of the laptop has 4 feet, 2 of which have rubber stoppers so that it won't slide all over a table. The USB port is covered by a sliding, spring loaded cover so it will stay closed and hopefully prevent curious toddlers from playing with it. This leaptop also teaches your child how to spell their name, and is far more interactive than the others I've seen. I would definitely buy this leaptop again, it's everything I was looking for--cute, educational, and fun! I can't wait for my toddler to get her hands on this!!
UPDATE: She played with this for at least 3 hours last night, was the first thing she went for this morning (even picked it over cartoons), and she has probably given it another 3-4 hours this morning. She loves the alphabet mode and I have been impressed by the length of time this has held her attention. She is pretty advanced for her 20 months, but I have been amazed at her progress with the alphabet. What a great investment!
Shocked by how much my daughter loves this! by Brian Mckee "mordeca
This toy was a gift and I have to confess I probably wouldn't have purchased this for my daughter because, in my admittedly limited experience, most of toys of this type are not worth the time or the money. This one is different.
Set-up, as a previous reviewer mentioned, was slightly aggravating as installation needed a little tweaking, but I found directions on the website that identified and fixed the problem without too much of a hassle. All-in-all, I spent about 10-15 minutes getting it ready for play, even with the little hiccup (I have some experience with the LeapFrog website as I have Violet the dog too - another great toy my daughter loves.
I was pleasantly surprised, however, by the immediate response from my daughter (she had just turned two a few weeks prior) who picked it up and started to play and explore the functions. She was engrossed to the point that she didn't want to open her other presents!
Now, I realize the attention-span of a toddler is a fleeting thing and I fully expected this to be one of those toys that would have a very short shelf-life, but here we are, 3-4 months later and she STILL plays with it on a daily basis. Durability has not been an issue as she has certainly put it through the wringer. She's dropped it, stepped on it, stood on it (I've stepped on it myself) and played with it roughly as toddlers do and it hasn't skipped a beat.
The best of all of this is the educational value. Now, granted, my daughter is a genius (as I'm sure your kid is too!), but after a few weeks of playing, she'd mastered all the letters of the alphabet and was able to generalize and identify (and verbalize) the letters on other items (shirts, signs, etc). As a parent, I was very excited to see such growth so quickly. That alone makes it worth it.
Having read some of the other reviews, I noticed people were criticizing the lack of a color display or the poor volume control, but let's be honest - the toy is a little over 20 bucks. What could you possibly expect? What you get, in my opinion, is worth every penny.
I've given this toy 4 stars, rather than 3, because ultimately it is fun and educational. However, I believe that the promotional sales jargon is deceptive and misleading. It tells you that you can 'choose from 20+ songs'(suggesting that you can have upto 20 songs on the computer, at least), what it doesnt clearly point out is that you can only have 6 songs downloaded from the pre-set playlist and no more songs can be added. Not only do you not get up to 20 songs, the songs that you do end up with are computerized and some are tinny and dont last very long. I also understood that my daughters name would be added into the songs and this is not the case. However, in addition to the 6 songs (5 instrumental and 1 with words that you can sing along to) that you can choose from, there is one additional song that is included that spells your child's name. All in all, this is a good product, I just wish there were more songs and maybe even a colour screen.
Cute, pink and somewhat educational by M. Collins
Honestly, I am not sure how educational this toy is, if anything it is mostly a toy that is fun to play with.
Remember that:
You *must* have a computer to have the full benefit of this toy! Hooking it up to the computer allows you to fully access all feature, which includes customization.
My daughters favorite part of this toy:
We customized it so that she gets "emails" from mom, dad, grandma, etc. She loves that it says her name.
It comes with the 3 AA batteries that takes
It can be customized to say your child's name
It has some cute music
It's more fun to play with as a toy so far, not so educational
It may be that my daughter, at 3.5 years old, is too young to get the full educational value out of it. Still, it seems more like a toy that can be distracting rather than an educational toy that allows for fun exploration. It's very noisy too, so keep that in mind :)
So far, I believe we still have the same batteries that it came with so it seems to be easy on batteries (it depends on how much you use it though, daily heavy use may result in short battery life).
I bought this for my niece and she LOVES it. Her parents love it as well. Within a few days she was already singing along with the ABC song which is great because she didn't know her ABCs yet. My favorite feature is the customized email. My brother created one that's from me. When she clicks the email button, it reads an email back to her and says its from me. I don't live in the same city so it's nice to know she has something to remind her of me all the time. I definitely recommend this product.
Perfect laptop for 3 - 4 year olds by Deb Runner
I have twins who are 3 1/2. I wanted to purchase toys/laptops which were very easy to travel with on a long up-coming car trip. I debated between this one and the Vtech tote and go. I hesitated on this one because it said for ages 2+. I was concerned that it would be too easy for a 3-4 year old. I decided to go with one of each so that they could be shared among my daughters and provide different games and entertainment for them. I am glad I got this one as I find it better for us than the Vtech in terms of ease of use and level of play for a 3 1/2 year old. I am a pre-K teacher and so I am very familiar with what the "average" 3 year old can do. The leapfrog is appropriate. My daughters can turn it on and select the games/modes themselves without a problem. I love the fact that I can set it up online and see what they are learning. I feel the Vtech Tote and Go is much harder for them to select a game themself as well as the games are a little advanced for them. I am happy with it too; however, I think the V-tech is better suited for the 4-5 year old range.
Great toy for my 2 y-o's birthday! by singingfrog7
This is the perfect balance of fun sounds, shapes and games that is easy for a 2-3 y-o to use! I was looking for a 'laptop' toy for my daughter's 2nd birthday but most out there were either too easy (just colored shapes and lights, not a lot of interaction) or too hard (real keyboard, hard to play if you can't read yet.) She liked playing with my son's Star Wars laptop toy, but she would get frustrated because she couldn't make it do the things he could without help. It has a qwerty keyboard but there are 3 different settings so you can put it on alphabet, music or animal games so you don't have to know your letters to have fun with it! There is an email button at the top which she loves because if you hook it up to your computer, you can personalize up to 3 emails to be 'sent' to her. When she pushes it, she hears "You have an email from Mommy!" or Daddy or C---- (her brother.) You can also personalize it with their name. She loves opening it and hearing, "Hi, K------! Let's learn about (animals, music or the alphabet)" There is a playlist button that you can customize, again via USB. Every kid has their favorite songs so you can program it to play 3 favorite kids songs and there is a list that you choose 2 classical instrumentals from.
Basically I can't say enough about it. If they just want to push random buttons, they will love it. If they are a bit older and can follow simple instructions, the voice of the toy speaks slowly and clearly so your child doesn't have to read to play the learning games so again, I think they will love it. Mine sure does!
I love LeapFrog products by KBUG1025
I think this is an excellent ''first'' laptop for a toddler. We bought this for our 2 year old, and the programming was easy. It teaches letters, numbers and words.. and also has customizable emails and name recognition. The only reason I am not giving this product 5 stars is because there are not enough emails you can customize. There are only 3. Bottom line.. anything from LeapFrog is fun and educational at the same time.
I purchased this fpr my two year old. I love the fact that you can program your childs name in it. My baby loves to turn it on and hear it say her name. She can play with this for hours. Great for road trips. Great for learning.
I ordered this item for my grand-daughter & she loves to use while her mom is on the computer. It says: "YOU HAVE MAIL" and it says her name, etc. She can carry it around and it seems indestructible (she's only 15 months). So, it's fun and educational.
We bought this for our 2 year old daughter for Christmas. She loves it! Now when I am checking my email she just gets out her own laptop to "check her puter" instead of wanting to sit on my lap. YAY!
Great addition to our growing toy collection! by kmommy514
My 20 month old daughter loves this "puter" as she calls it. She think she has her own laptop just like mommy and we often sit together on the couch or the floor with our laptops and play at the same time. It is quite the great toy for the kids who see their parents using computers a lot. I think it is for intended for children who are a little older but I'm sure she'll be prentending with this computer for a long time. She dances to the music and repeats the letters to me all the time. I am so glad Santa brought it this past Christmas!!
I checked out many laptop choices before picking this one and we haven't been disappointed. My daughter especially enjoys that I could program the laptop to say her name and sing a song about her name.
Bought for my sister's daughter by Shopper of good thin
I gave this to my sister for her daughter. I was really impressed (granted, I knew little about this toy) that you could download things onto it from your computer. I didn't play with it a lot, but you can easily customize the computer so it greets your child with their own name when they start it up. Great for learning letters / alphabet. Highly interactive. Would be good for little ones that constantly want "the real computer"
Eats batteries by Laura Larkin
Ok toy, but it eats batteries. Gave it to my daughter for Christmas, by Jan 4 the batteries were already dead.
wonderful leappad by Angela Kaye Houy "bu
this is a wonderful laptop for a 2 yr old. Its hard to find good ones for this age. i love the girly color and the fact that it can be personalized. its reasonably priced for what it does. the only downfall I see is the fact it does nbot say my daughters name right. if your child has a unusual name it may not even be in the system.
Santa brought this to our 18 month old. She seems to enjoy it, although she is a little young to be able to follow all of the directions. We personalized it with her name and created emails to send to her. The process was very simple to follow. It is nice that it says her name every time she turns it on. It also shuts off after a few minutes of inactivity. I like that it recognizes the first letter of her name when that button is pressed in the abc mode. It is a cute, engaging toy that teaches letter recognition, letter sounds, and facts about animals. I think she will continue to learn from it as she gets older. As an early childhood teacher I am a fan of many LeapFrog products and this one was no exception.
Great for 2 year old! by Alleyson
My daughter actually got three "laptops" for Christmas and this by far is the absolute best for a two year old! It has at least 7 different activities to do and with the mini mouse and screen that coordinates with the game or letters. We love the personalizing emails, music and animals sounds the best right now, though I see this toy lasting at least until she is 4 or 5.
leaptop is great by kissaddict
we purchased this product for our 20 month old daughter. she loves it! she likes the different musical sounds and the fact that you can personalize it, is amazing. every time it gets turned on and greets her with her name, she smiles and laughs. my only worry is the durability of the screen to computer lasting.
Fun and Educational by Coritha Rucker "Neva
We love this laptop!! We have lots of Leapfrog products. It has great songs... I love the fact that it says her name and the alphabet game is great! My little girl will be 3 in February and this laptop is perfect for her educational level. We also bout the scribble and it is a 5 star as well!!
MY BABY GIRL LOVES THIS! by T. Mason "madame but
I HAVE A VERY SMART 1 1/2 YEAR OLD WHO LOVES THIS LAPTOP. I LOVE THAT SHE HAS HER OWN LAPTOP SO SHE CAN KEEP HER FINGER TIPS OFF MINE. TOOK ABOUT 10 MINUTES TO PROGRAM. IT MAKES LEARNING FUN.
Leapfrog Violet Laptop by Wolf Pack "Sheri"
This was purchased for my 2 year old and she seems to love it. She picks it up often and plays with it. I like that you can customize it with your child's name and have emails from relatives that pop up when you push the email button. Very nice first computer for a little one. Seems pretty durable. The hook up and download process was pretty easy. The only complaint is that after just 2 days and limited use the batteries were dying. Of course they were cheap batteries but most toys last longer than a few days on the batteries they come with. Other than that the Leapfrog Laptop meets my expectations. Would recommend this item to a friend.
Granddaughter liked it a lot. by Ralph Gustafson "tru
My two year old granddaughter seemed very happy with her "puter" and her parents were also pleased. We'll see how it holds up. So far so good.
A fun on-the-go toy by Red-headed mom
Overall, I'm pleased with this product. I'm thinking that my daughter will like it more when she's grown into some of the features. She's only 20 months at this point and I think she'll make more connections within the next 6 months or so (which is the recommended age range, I know). I like the feature of pressing the button and hearing the letter sound and word that begins with that letter. My daughter loves the music and it's fun to hear her name when you press the button. The features are simple, and it would be nice if there were a few more- animal sounds, etc. A great toy for long car rides.
Shoddy construction; horrible customer service by Melissa
I purchased this for my 16-month old daughter. The day she opened it, she pushed it from the couch to the padded/carpeted floor. The sound now does not work at all. Thinking that this product must have been "toddler tested" and that this kind of use is not out of the ordinary for any toddler, I contacted customer service because the item was still within its warranty period. They refuse to replace it. They also do not have a repair department. But, they did send me a 15% off coupon so that I could purchase another one (which I will NOT be doing). I essentially flushed the cost of this item down the toilet. I purchased several other LeapFrog products on this day for Christmas gifts. As they are unopened, they will be immediately returned and replaced with a more durable product. I will never buy another LeapFrog product again.
NO educational games or any for that matter by Fred
I bought this, and when I got it for my daughter she liked it. I went and hooked it up to my computer and downloaded the name and email, and what not, but THERE ARE NO GAMES!!! you cant buy them, you cant download them... it is not very educational... the only thing it does besides pay music is when you push a letter it will reapeat it back to you, no numbers,,, no anything I am very disappointed...
My Own Leaptop Violet by Olive2smile
If your looking for another teaching tool that looks like playtime for your little one(s), then you've found a great one here! What child doesn't LOVE to play, dance and use electronics like Mommy & Daddy? My daughter who was 2 received this last year for Christmas. This laptop helps with teaching the ABC's, music and animals. It aids in teaching letter sounds and letter recognition. Another great feature is the ability to program it with my daughters name, music and emails. It invites her to sing a song about her name were she learns how to spell her name. You can program it to send emails from 3 different people and it reads them to your child. I wish that you could type a short message yourself, instead of the preselected phrases. She loves to learn about animals and in that mode it teaches her an animal for each letter of the alphabet. Overall, it's a great toy! I've been extremely please with all Leap Frog Products =)
Fun toy with lots of fun features. I was really hoping that you would be able to load more than 3 email messages, but my grand daughter loves her computer!
Good for older kids... by R. Edwards "RE"
I purchased this for my daughters 2nd Birthday and she pushed a few buttons smiled and threw it to the side. It doesn't keep her attention very long and I think it would be a perfect toy for a 3 year old.
