5Great phone! Great tones! The only one to own! by Milo

Well it finally happened. This phone has replaced the Parents Phone in our house. For years the Parents Phone was a favorite with our first born, now 3 1/2. My one year old was given the "Leapfrog Chat and Count Phone" for his birthday and now it is his go to toy. He throws the Parents Phone across the room and shrieks in frustration. He loves the music button on the Leapfrog phone, pushes it and does a little dance. He also puts it to his ear and pretends to have a conversation. Since he has never seen a flip phone, I am not sure he knows that the Parents Phone is a phone. The Chat & Count Phone goes everywhere with us. It is perfect for the car, grocery store and doctor's office.

5very great entertaining toy by shamanologist & yoga

I purchased this phone because my baby wouldnt leave my blackberry and cordless phone alone. worried she would one day accidentally dial 911 i looked up a phone to purchase for her that would be somewhat educational and found this one, I have to say it is soo cool, so now she will leave my berry alone< this is going to be great for car trips and alot of other things it it entertaining and enough buttons and noisy things to push around that is plenty of amusement the little animated pictures are fun for counting and development towards number recognition, even though my baby is close to 12 months it is still worth the purchase as she is engaged with it for a little while i see her carrying it around when she starts to walk and will be growing into it more and more.

5Just like Moms with her favorite character Scout! by Daddy B Me

My daughter got the Scout Plush a while back so we picked up the phone now that she is older (she still falls asleep with the plush every night). This is one little tough phone with a lot of fun learning animations for each number and other fun functions. My daughter like most kids love have whatever mommy has. It was great to pick up a phone that somewhat realistic looking and also has the learning done right for my little one. Ruff ruff!!!

5Great durable and fun little phone by MG

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this phone!!! We received this as a gift for my second child on her first birthday. She is now 20 months old. She liked the phone when she got it, but likes it more now. She is already understanding the concept of counting and can count to three (only partly due to the phone,) and the more she understands numbers and counting the more she likes the phon. So I think she will be even more enamored of it by her second birthday.

My older child (6yo) had several phones including the Parents phone, which was his favorite. We still have it and my little one likes that phone too, but mostly because you can record your own voice speaking to the child and calling him/her by name. She definitely prefers this Leapfrog one to any of the other play phones in the house!

We generally keep this phone as our travel/restaurant/car phone for her. Limiting her exposure to it means it is always new and entertaining when you need it to be, and that she doesn't get bored because she can't play with it all the time. This is a relatively small toy that isn't too obnoxiously loud, it is easy to take with you to keep a child entertained for a short period of time (even my 6 yo will play with it for a while when the baby gets bored).

In short:

Pros
+ Fairly small toy yet big enough to have buttons that are easy for a 1 yo
+ Buttons are very easy to push - and I LOVE the smooth easy to clean surface of the buttons!
+ Image on screen is clear and the dog is very cute
+ Simple but cute animation in the dog
+ Clear easy to read display of each number when you push the corresponding number
+ There are more than a dozen different 'messages' played when pressing the phone button, and several different cute 'ring tones'
+ Two volume settings that are perfect! Not too quiet but not annoyingly loud either. I wish all kids toys were this volume!!!
+ Overall very durable - except for the screen scratching see note below.

Cons
- Screen is a tad on the small side. I would trade slightly smaller buttons to get a slightly bigger screen and still have the toy the same size overall.
- Screen scratches really easily!!! This is the biggest disappointment in the toy, the manufacturer knew it was for little kids who would beat it up so a more scratch resistant screen should have been a must. That said after 8 months of occasional use the screen isn't so scratched that you can't see it, but bad enough to be bothersome. This is a MUST change by Leapfrog!!
- Not enough counting songs!!! The music button only offers 4 different songs as follows:
* A 'Hello' song that is made up by the manufacturer but is cute
* The tune to 'If Your Happy and You Know It'
* The tune to one verse of 'This Old Man'
* A made up manufacturers counting to ten song.
There are tons of counting songs for kids so one would think that at least a few more would be incorporated into the music button. And that the dog would sing more than two. I suggest singing the words to 'This Old Man' and singing one verse each time the button is pressed. You don't have to go up to 10 just 4 or 5 would be fine. Also another cute counting tune is the traditional 'One little, Two Little, Three little Indians' but change the words to 'One Little, Two Little, Three Little Puppies' then when you get to ten say Ruff, Ruff, Ruff.

Wishlist - for future releases this is a list of nice to haves
- More counting songs as stated above
- Ability to connect to pc and add childs name just like the Scout plush toys
- Ability for parent to record a short sentence on the phone just like the old Parents one

Overall, we are very pleased with the phone and price! We are big fans of Leapfrog products in general and this toy is not a disappointment. I would have given it 5 stars except for the screen scratches and desire to have a couple more common counting songs where the dog counts.

5Definitely not up to age 5 by Teacher "Trish T"

The manufacturer's age range is up to 5 years old, but this toy is definitely not fun or a challenge for my 4 year old, who is even behind his age targets. It plays the same 10-12 songs over and over again, depending on which buttons you push. If it wasn't such a pain to send it back, I would. I could see it being worthwhile for up to 3 though- the visual and auditory repetition of the numbers probably does help kids learn their numbers.

5Not too fun by Mom of 3

This is probably the most disappointing LeapFrong toy we have. It's not interactive at all. You push a number button and Scot the dog will say the number and have a little animation. The animation is hard to see because it's so pixelated. There is only 1 song on it and 1 or 2 tunes to the music button. For the phone button you are calling Scot. He answers says thanks for calling and hangs up. This was an attempt for interaction, but he says bye and so my kids stop talking. After doing this twice my 2 and 3 year old just stopped playing with this. My 15 month is still a little intrigued, but not too much since there are no lights or color. This also only counts from 0-9, so I think there are better toys out there to learn numbers. Also this is learning the number as the kids push it, so it's not counting per say. The phone shape and idea is all that is going for this toy.

5Okay, but not great. Kind of a disappointment for MOM. by B.D. "NeverEnoughRom

I was really excited about getting this for my 18 month old son. I'd had it on his Wishlist for weeks and happily found it at Wal-Mart for the same price.

My son loves my cell phone and he loves his Scout and I thought that this phone, instead of all the others would be great. I knew that the screen was black and not colored, so that didn't phase me much. The graphics are cute, and unfortunately, probably the best thing about the phone. It is pretty big, but not too big or too heavy for little hands.

To be honest (even though) I'd read all the reviews, I was expecting a little more.

The box and the advertising said that he could "chat with Scout" which lead me to believe that I could plug it into my computer and it would connect with our Scout and learn my son's name and that I could upload more into it. That is not the case.

The music has songs about counting and phone routines; it has four and they are very short. The call button was supposed to trade calls and messages with Scout. It has 2 ring tones and 2 short messages; both are quick conversation "how are you, nice talking to you, goodbye". I was very disappointed in it's lack of conversational abilities and messages.

"15 fun phone activities"... only if you press every number and the music and call buttons twice.

My son seems to like it. He pushes the buttons and holds it to his ear, but he loses interest after about 3 minutes. I don't think that he recognizes Scout in the pictures on the screen (the screen which scratches very easily), but he does recognize his voice. He says "Scut, Scot!!!" when the puppy talks to him (in the messages and calls) but it's over so quickly that I think he gets disappointed.

I expected much more with this toy. In todays technological age and the size of memory chips and such, you'd think that they could create a toy phone that COULD actually connect/sync with another toy, talk to your child (with more than 2 sentences), ask him questions (even if he didn't answer), have a few different ring tones, maybe a few different messages, and still light up when they push the bottons. Maybe I'm asking too much. But I would have paid twice what this one was for those options.

5My 2-year-old LOVES this phone! by Avid Reader "hungryj

My 2-year-old got this phone for her 2nd birthday and she absolutely LOVES it. The screen shows the number pressed, then counts object up to that number. She thinks this is a real phone and is more than satisfied to trade a real phone that she's gotten hold of for this toy phone! Well worth the $15.

5Nice made toy by Robyn Swenlin

This is a great little phone. My son loves phones so this was a hit. I am a little disappointed with the screen I wish It was a little brighter. It is always hard to see. The graphics are cute. We have a few toy phones and I don't think this is the top choice for my 19th month old. He plays with it more like a toy not a phone. I like the simplicity of it. All it does is say the number you push. Plus the song and ring buttons on the bottom. It feels and looks like a sturdy toy not flimsy at all. I am hoping that as he understands numbers that it will be chosen more. I like the size it travels well. It is his "car seat" toy!

5Best Phone for a Toddler! by Catherine Michaud

My son just turned 2 years old, and he loves playing with phones, remote controls, computers, etc. He is not easily fooled when I try to give him an "imitation" toy in place of the real thing (ex. - giving him a toy cell phone in place of my real cell phone). I bought this phone in the hopes that it would entertain him while making him think he was using a real phone.

Much to my delight, this phone has FAR exceeded my expectations! My son now has learned to count from 0 to 10 just from playing with this phone! He can sit for long periods of time and play with this phone. He even insists on sleeping with it now! It has a wonderful song button which has several educational, catchy tunes on it. There is another button that makes the phone sound like it is ringing and the little dog character talks as though he is on the phone. Each number button says its number and then gives an example like, "let's count five flowers" and the voice counts along with cute graphics. Seriously, my son only knew the number 9 before getting this phone, and within a week he could count with the phone! It is amazing. Also, when we go places and I want him to be entertained with a toy, this is the best toy he owns. It entertains him for long periods of time, and he does seem to think it is a real phone, or at least resembles a real phone enough to satisfy him.

I highly recommend this phone to anyone with a toddler. It is one of the best toys I've ever bought for my son. I love that it is both educational AND fun!

5Cute but broke quickly by AH "A.H."

My 2 year old received this as a gift and really liked it. However, it broke after about 1 month. It won't even turn on (and new batteries did not fix it).

5My kid is mesmorized by D. Mello

My 16 month old is fascinated by electronics that make any kind of noise or music. He is always trying to steal the remote control or cell phones from the grandparents so this seemed like a great toy. He did not put this down the first day he got it. He really likes this toy. Beyond just making noise Leapfrog put some educational counting games in there etc. so I'm pretty happy with it.

5Best Toddler Phone by JessGarcia

Bought this for my son when he was about 1 and he liked it and played with it sometimes. The voice is very cute, not annoying at all and the graphics are fun to watch too. Now that he's 1 1/2 he LOVES it. It's always in the diaper bag when we go out and it never fails to calm him. He dances with the songs, sniffs like the puppy does when he counts to 7, and pretends he's on the phone and babbles. This is the one to buy. I bought him an Elmo phone for a long plane ride recently, thinking its bright colors and Elmo's voice were just the thing for such a challenging situation, but it's not worth it. He's not interested in it at all. This little guy "scout", on the other hand, is definitely a charmer and the phone is sturdy too. It's gotten dropped and thrown and so far, so good, save a few scratches on the screen.

5Educational and FUN! by T. McCollum

I bought this for my three year old daughter and she loves it! It has really helped her with her numbers. The puppy on the screen is really cute and the graphics are great. It plays songs which she has already memorized that help with counting and also says the numbers out loud while showing them on the screen. This toy phone was worth every penny! We are very happy with it.

5Pleased. by J. Baldwin "Auburn"

Okay, honestly if you are buying this toy as a "replacement" for your kid when he/she tries to take your cell phone, you will be disappointed, but that's true of most of the toy phones on the market geared to children under 3. Very few of them look and behave like realistic cell phones.

We bought this for our daughter when she started learning numbers. We wanted an electronic counting toy that actually *showed* the numbers and what they represented in a non-cluttering/confusing way. A lot of the electronic toys on the market fail as they are too busy and the number symbols get lost. We also wanted a portable toy to carry in a purse/diaper bag for places like the grocery store, doctor's office, etc...

We loved the laptop and text because they served this purpose (only with the alphabet and spelling). The phone has not disappointed us at all. My only complaint is I wish there were more functions (like being able to put our daughter's name into it), but for the size of the toy and the price tag, I can understand why this may not be viable at this point (maybe in future versions).

The graphics are cute, there is a small volume control, and it is a fun and educational little toy. Overall, we're very happy with this phone (and more importantly) our daughter is too. :)

5Great durable phone by GraceMetal

This toy phone is great. My 16 month old loves it and knows just how to use it. We have Scout the dog that is the same voice that is on this phone. She is pretty tough on her toys and this phone has been dropped a few times and doesn't seem worse for wear. I really looked to find something for her that seemed realistic but durable and this phone is still the best I've seen. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is because there is no lighting on it. If it blinked when it rang or had some backlight it would get 5 stars. But overall it's a great toy and lots of fun.

5As close to real as your gonna get! by The Nana

Bought this for one of my grand daughters for Christmas, she loves to chatter and the faker looking cell phone toys just did not keep her interest. She loves this as it looks more like a cell phone and not a toy! The minute she opened it she held it to her ear and said "hello"!

5Great Toy by J. Boyd

My 3year old loves this phone! She hasn't put it down since Christmas. The screen scratched up pretty easily, but she doesn't mind.

5Big for a cell phone replacement, but super fun if you're super young by Joseph Dewey

This is the size of a mid-90's cell phone. It's very loud and comes with batteries, and so if you're looking for a benign plaything, this is great. If you're looking for something that will fool your kid into thinking it's your 16 GB iPhone or Android device, keep looking.

Pros:
+Kids love it
+Kids will eat this instead of your cell phone
+Hard to swallow, since it's so big
+Comes with batteries
+Will fool very small children

Cons:
-Won't completely fool kids since it's different ergonomically than regular cell phones have been for the past 10-15 years
-Won't fool the kids that aren't very small
-Louder than a regular cell phone

5My 20-month old son's favorite new toy by RunMommyRun

This toy is the closest looking thing to an iPhone, so my son loves it. The volume is low enough (even on the highest setting) so that it doesn't annoy innocent bystanders and is very portable for trips to the store or restaurant. Great purchase for little ones who like to pretend to do what mommies and daddies do!

5Great toy, if only it were bilingual by SQ "SQ"

very well designed with on/off and volume button only parent can move. very entertaining for my 15 month old - the only thing as interesting as our cell phones! It's a really great and cute introduction to numbers, too. The only improvement I would suggest is the parent being able to switch the language to all Spanish

5Good for the price by hera

I have been searching for something in between a baby phone and a real phone and let me tell you there's not much out there. The animations that go with the numbers are pretty cute although I'm not sure that my son watches them all the way through. But he just got this for his 3rd birthday yesterday so he may be over zealous with the buttons right now. I believe there are only 3 songs. One is just music, one counts to ten and one is a short phone conversation. (Hello, how are you today etc.) As far as the fifteen fun activities I have no idea what they are talking about. The call button has a couple of different rings and you call Scout. He does say several different things. I'm not sure about the voicemails, I haven't heard anything that sounds like one but it may be because I only just got it. It's larger then I thought but still small enough to take in your bag. My son opened it right before we made an hour and 45 minute car trip and he played with it for at least the first 45 minutes which I think is great! He also played with it for about 15-20 minutes awhile after we got back home so he seems to like it pretty well. I wish it had a little game on it and that Scout waited a couple more seconds for you to respond to him.

5Good safe toy by Julia Shevchenko

It is a good safe toy and my 9mo likes it but gets bored quickly. It would be more entertaining if it had more features or sounds. It would be also nice if it had color screen.

5Fun buttons by YaYa4Kylie

I purchased this for my grand daughter's first birthday, because she loves to play with her Mommy's cell phone. I think she loved the buttons on this, but the lack of lights disinterested her. The screen is difficult to see and the graphics are not all that great. I hope she will enjoy it as she gets a little older.

5DO NOT BUY !!! by Gigi

Lovely toy, great fun. Just one small problem. On the second day my toddler dropped it and the sound stopped. In very tiny letters in the instructions it says " do not drop ". Great so we bought a toy for a toddler that is not to be dropped !! SO I am supposed to spend the whole day running after her, arms outstretched, just in case ? A waste of money !

5Start 'em young! by Elizabeth B. Mann "d

My daughter is 12 months old and obsessed with my Blackberry so I thought I'd get her a phone of her own. Sometimes she'll sit with it and watch the screen, enjoy the little animations and songs- but the screen contrast isn't the best and the phone is a little big/heavy for her small hands. Maybe she'll appreciate it more as she grows...

5Hilarious, and very entertaining by Punkyy02

I bought this for my 2 year old, hid it in the closet, and I came home from work to find him in the closet laughing hysterically at the phone, and he was talking away. It was extremely hard to take from him, as he insisted he found it, and it was his... :( I would recommend for ages 2+. (and be prepared for lots of talking) Packaging is open in a small rectangular box, and is off, until you hit the buttons. No complaints on our end. I'm sure it will be a hit come Christmas morning. :)

5decent phone by Ben's mommy

I got this for my son who is almost 7 months old. He loves phones and remotes so I hoped he would like this one. He likes it ok but doesn't love it. Maybe when he gets a little older he will enjoy it more.

5Not high quality by Jenny

This seemed like a good toy. It is very educational. After about 2 weeks the sound stopped working. Now it is not played with at all.

5Cute toy, pretty good entertainment! by A. Dowdall

We got this for my 2 year old son who loves his letters and numbers. Each number has an object that the puppy counts. The puppy is adorable and it also plays some fun tunes. This is not something that will entertain your young child for a very long time. I use it to keep my toddler amused while changing his diaper, and its a great car toy for traveling around town. Its something he enjoys in small increments, but definitely a cute toy! Also of good quality, as are most Leap Frog toys!

5Our boys love this toy by Phoenix AZ

We have twin boys that were 18 months old when given the British version of this toy by a friend of ours. They instantly fell in love with it and even began to fight over who would play with it (not exactly uncommon with twins). We ended up having to put the toy away until we could purchase another one.

Personally I don't know what they like so much about this toy but it would keep them occupied longer than any other toys they had. We have had these for about 6 months now and they have held up well to rough play and no need to change the battery even with frequent use. Their interest has waned like with any toy at this age but we try to rotate their toys and it easily becomes a favorite when they see it again.

This toy has also helped our boys recognize and repeat numbers. It would be nice if the display was a little more detailed, but for the price it is a great toy.

5This does a lot more than I thought it would. by Brooke K. "Choose Jo

I have a one year old that cries every time I pick up my cell phone. I am not going to be handing him that to play with, so I thought I'd order him his own little phone for Christmas. I expected it to light up, and maybe say a few phrases, but it does a whole lot more than that. I was really pleasantly surprised with the quality. My son is going to love this.

5My friend's baby loved it so much! by Yihua Kong

My friend's baby girl is about 2 yrs now. She is at the age that is so curious about a phone. Now she has her own and is in super love with it.

5Love it! by Princess

I bought this toy for my son so that he would allow me to use the 'big people's phone' without argument. It worked!! He is 18 months old and has had it for three weeks. On Sunday he said "butterfly"!! he has refused to utter a word since 'cat' and 'dog' at 12 months and suddenly he is spitting out complex words that he learned from this toy! He loves it and I love that I get to use the 'big people's phone' without getting an argument from him.

As for durability - this brand has never dissapointed! It has come into rapid and aggressive contact with tiles, concrete and wood with nothing more than a scratch.

5Love it! by Amanda Velasquez

My 14 month old son always wants to play with my iphone. He takes any square shaped item and holds it to his face like a phone and starts talking. I almost bought the iPhone 'like' toy, but saw it at Wal-mart and it was SO bulky. This toy is the perfect size. The sounds and music it plays are fun and not too loud. And I love the counting to 10 feature. It is the perfect size to slip in a diaper bag or purse and pull out at a store or restaurant. SO glad I bought this one!

5Great iPhone substitute!! by Donna Crawford "deec

This was given to my grandson on his first birthday. He loved it! He pretends to talk on it, and yells into it, and jabbers away...unfortunately, he lost it, or we lost it somewhere, so I'm here to buy him a new one! What else are grandmothers for?? LOL! It's too bad it doesn't connect to the internet so he could play YouTube videos on it! Don't know how durable it is, since he only had it 2 weeks, but it's well worth the money for a child who loves our iPhones and loves music.

5Least Annoying Cell Phone Toy w/Volume Control! by Jessica

Wanted to find a fun cell phone toy for my son when he got to that age where he was picking up everything small and rectangular and saying, "Hello?" into it. I spent some time in the toy departments of all my local stores trying out various options ... only to find that most of them were super loud and super annoying (to my ears, anyway). This little phone has volume control (first plus), and instead of just saying silly things - it plays counting games with each number as it's pressed. This was a huge plus for me - as my son was just starting to count to 10 when I picked up this phone. He was delighted to "know" what each button said and be able to interact.

5Cute but boring by AmazinMom3

My 9 month old loves my cell phone and tries to eat it constantly so I purchased this play phone in hopes he would not be as facinated with mine anymore. This toy is cute but heavy and chunky and he likes to throw it more than play with it. It is not very loud and Leap talks really fast on the fake voicemail so you cant really talk back to him as I think they were intending for the child to do. I would not purchase this again, hopefully I can find a play phone that is closer to a real cell phone.

5The boys like it by Me&MyTwins

I bought this toy for my nephew and my boys. They all love to just sit back, stare at the screen as they press the buttons. I wish the animation was in color, but it still serves the purpose. Perfect to take on trip to keep your child busy.

5Not realistic enough for my little guy (updated) by kristine osborn

I bought this for my 1 year old who is obsessed with my smartphone. Unfortunately this toy is much heavier and thicker than a real smartphone, and it doesn't light up, which is what I believe makes my phone most appealing to him. If this toy had a light up screen, I think it would be sensational. The music and counting are nice features.

UPDATE
My son is now 14 months old and enjoys this toy. While it still cannot compare to mommy's phone or his two favorite toys (playskool busy ball popper and fisher price gumball machine), he definitely shows more interest than he did before, and enjoys pushing the buttons, watching the screen, and holding the phone up to his ear just like the grownups!
