5With great respect, I dissent by A Reader

Well, it's intimidating to write a bad review for the Bilibo. First, you need a thick skin, because it seems that a sure way to get "unhelpful" votes on Amazon is to utter disrespect for the sacred Bilibo. Second, even anonymously, a bad review can't help but come off as perhaps some sort of indication that your child is just lacking in the "imagination" department. Who wants to be perceived as having an unimaginative child?

Well, my flame suit firmly in place, I respectfully dissent. When the Bilibo arrived in our house as a surprise present for our 3.5 year old, my wife looked at me as though I were a bit off. "No no no," I protested. "You don't understand! This is the most talked about toy on the Internet. What looks like a simple oddly shaped upside down German World War II helmet is really the key to unlocking our child's innermost happiness." Despite several skeptical glances, I pleaded: "Please trust me. Apparently, kids just love them, even if adults cannot completely understand it." "It is," I declared triumphantly, "the cardboard box of the 21st century." "But," my wife replied, "we already have cardboard boxes. Some of which date from the 21st century." Shaking my head knowingly and with a sad looking glance, firmly secure in the knowledge that 100 five-star reviews can't be wrong, I thought, "you'll just have to wait and see." My biggest concern was that my wife would feel somehow she was not in touch with our child when she saw the glee on our child's face when the Bilibo was gloriously displayed and our child's imagination fully engaged and unlocked!

On the appointed day, the gift was delivered. Ready for the magic that was sure to unfold, we placed it in the middle of the room. "What is it?" "Why, it's a Bilibo." "What does it do?" "Whatever you like, Sweetheart. Whatever you want it to be, it can be." "Can I put my books in it?" "Yes! Of course. You can put your books in it!"

Well, the books are still there. In the Bilibo. In the corner of the room. We took them out briefly for some spinning attempts and some other guided Bilibo activities that were received more as a chore than as playtime. So we put the books back in. They don't fit so well. The books are square and rectangular. The Bilibo is round. As a book holder, I would only rate it as average or maybe slightly below.

A cardboard box would hold more books, I think.

5Great toy by Stuck in OH Illini

Had two Bilibo's delivered to my grandchildren (ages 1.5 and 2.5) while we were on vacation. What great fun the Bilibo's are! They spin and rock in them, sort toys into them, cradle their babies in them and walk around with them on their heads acting like cartoon characters. We haven't even tried them out in snow! The play value is immense and never ending which is what great toys become.

And while at my 2.5 yr. grandchild's, she stands in it, hangs on to a chair and twists and balances standing in it. Her mother was a gymnast and NCAA diver and this looks like a great toy to build those ankles up for balancing and take-offs. The 1.5 yr. old uses it for his cars and trucks and plays train with the Bilibo as a tunnel. He also uses it like the back of a dump truck.

I would rank the Bilibo up there with staples for the nursery/kindergarten like blocks and balls. There is no end to the creativity and usefulness a child gets from it. It looks like fun and the children see it that way immediately. I bought it using Amazon's system of review and bestsellers, the video of the Bilibo and my child development education background. On all levels it was A+!!

5A few years later, and.. by Hilary Williams "hil

We've had ours for a few years, now, and still love it!

I see that a few other reviewers were bothered that it isn't more functional as a chair. I agree that it is not the most comfortable of chairs. This does not bother me, however, because it's design is very well suited to the active and creative use intended.

It's best use is not as a single self-contained, self explainatory activity (the simple rocking, balancing, or spinning never lasts long around here), but as an accessory to any number of activities and imaginative games. In addition to being the means to some serious dizziness, ours has been a tunnel, a sled, a cave, a chariot, a stool, a mountain, a cradle, and so much more.

There have been times when it was tucked away and unused, but the kids are always excited when they rediscover it and suddenly it returns to being the most cherished and fought over among toys.

I admit to having a few initial doubt- my kids' interest was short lived when I introduced it as a single straightforward activity. It was as an accessory to all their everyday play that it really started to shine. Now I consider it to be one of my best toy purchases.

5A Well Made Toy! (UPDATED) by Sapere Aude

My children, ages 4.5 and 2.5 each got two of these for Christmas. They are a big hit. I'm very impressed with the construction, which is of a thick plastic, I can flip it over and stand on top myself and it only flexes slightly on our slippery kitchen floor. They are a good size - an adult of medium build could sit in one. My kids can get in and cross their legs inside too.

The shape is great - two of them fit together to form a kind of spherical shape. The two holes are inspired as they love putting them on their heads and looking through the holes. They have found a ton of uses so far! They spin the bilibo and put a marble in and watch it go around. They spin around in them themselves. They have used it as the center in their block building expeditions, as a seat and to port toys around the house.

I am very impressed with this toy - I love how it inspires creativity and active play. I would definitely recommend getting one or several!

Update - 4 years later - these have stood the test of time. They are not only still in perfect condition, the kids still enjoy playing with them now at ages 6 and 8.

5Not sure what all the fuss is about by Amy O "sista411"

I bought 3 of these for my kids. Was it worth the $75? Not really. They use them, play with them, but for the money, I'd go with something else. For what they are, they should be considerably cheaper. My 2 year old has more fun with the empty diaper box.

5Super Duper! by M. Hertzler

My kids are doing all kinds of things with these toys, as they should be. They are sturdy and resilient and can be used in water, dirt, sand, just about anywhere! They have held marbles, cars, pompoms, snacks, water and tiny animals. They have been used as hats, stool, spinning seats, water buckets, animal caves, baby rockers and mountains.

Great imaginative toy!

5Will last forever! by J. Aljammali

Kids of all ages love this toy. I bought it for my 2 year old. He uses it as a chair, a hat, a saucer, a balancing board....it has so many uses, who would have known! We have yet to use it as a sled, but soon! It is made of heavy, durable plastic...I don't think it will ever break.

5Most boring toy ever... quite the conversation piece though. by reviewer2009

I bought this for my son when he was nearing three. He's very imaginative and likes building with blocks, playing with animal toy sets, playing with other "brainy" toys that I've purchased, as well as doing the typical toys like cars, etc. I bought this toy after reading the phenomenal reviews. Unfortunately, after two years now, he still does not "get it" if there is anything to get. The only use so far is holding it up in the pool and letting water come out of the holes as a waterfall. Sometimes our guests will put it on as a Darth Vader helmet and that's funny for about 5 seconds.

That being said, the only actual use we've gotten out of it is people asking me what the heck it is. Then I explain it's award winning and great and kids find tons of things to do with it, you'll see. But, we never saw, because my son still thinks it's lame and does not play with it. I may as well have given him a plastic bowl that got warped in a fire or something.

SO... I would suggest trying it, but don't be shocked that your kid apparently isn't some Euro genius who pretends it's his science lab where he cures cancer with it, or whatever it is they're supposed to do.

I wish it had cost less, the it might be easier to say 'oh well.' :)

5Waste of Money by Mama Cav

This toy was quite hyped by educational toy websites, and since I want my kids to be having fun and being creative, I bought the Bilibo. My husband commented that it is just a sturdy plastic bowl, and it pretty much is. It didn't spark my kids creativity and they quickly lost interest in it. When they tried to spin in it, they fell over, and when they tried to stand on it (with it turned over), they slipped off. It really is just a plastic bowl.

5Not the reaction that I expected... by J. Krusinski "Chris

After reading raving reviews I purchased this toy for my almost three year old son. He played with it for about five minutes the first night and hasn't touched it since. He is a very creative and curious little boy but this toy just did not do it for him. It is very durable and well made. The color is bright and beautiful. Although I sincerely appreciate the concept, honestly, for us it was a waste of money. Maybe an older child would have a different reaction.

5Love it! by punkymom44 "punkymom

I gave my 7 y/o special needs son one of these for his birthday. He LOVES it! He has Asperger's and rarely plays with toys the traditional way. I haven't given him any ideas, I just told him he can do whatever he wants with it. So far he sat in it, wore it as a helmet and made himself a turtle with it.

5it's fun but is not played with too often by E. Willis

My kids have played with this since they received it a year ago. It's fun and can be used for many things, mainly as a hat, something to sit in and spin, and as a turtle shell. I really thought they would find more uses for it but have not yet. It is super durable and can withstand an adult standing on it without bending. The only big problem is how slippery it is on carpet, when the kids stand in it while the curved top is touching the carpet it slips right out from under them. The learned quickly not to do it but could have been hurt if they were near something they could have fallen onto.

5Fun for older and younger children by Three Boys Now "Momm

My 9 year old pushes my 9 month around on the carpet in this. It's so cute. They also like to put balls into it and spin them. They will do this forever just watching it spin faster or slower in response to their tilting it a certain way. I was really shocked to see my 9 month olds interest in this, even when his brother wasn't around. I think it was well worth the money.

5I can't believe my kids actually play with this. by D. Hardaway "dhardaw

I read all the reviews and thought there was no way a child would actually play with this. Well, I was wrong. They were purchased for my 9 year old, 15 month old, and my 5 year old niece and every one of them has had a blast playing with them. I do find that they enjoy them more in groups. It is much more fun to spin in circles on the tile floor with a friend. I was surprised to see that my son (15 months) actually played with it. At this point, he pretty much just sits in it and rocks and laughs when he topples over backwards or uses it as a stool, but I think the uses he finds for it will expand over the next few years. So, overall, I'm pleasantly surprised at how much they like it.

As for durability, I think I could drive over this thing with the car and not damage it! They are super durable.

5Odd fun toy by Robert Petkus

It's not like my kids play with this thing every day -- it's like a rocking horse -- an object that sits idle and collects dust until activated.

What have I seen my kids do with this thing? Crawl around with it on their back like a turtle, hold it over the head peering out the (2) holes like a mask, tie a rope through the holes and tow things, sit and laze inside with a book. We even went down a snowy hill in it when I couldn't find the sled (!).

But most off all, the kids want Daddy to manically push and spin them around in it forever (so tiring). As such, the bottom is heavily scuffed and scratched.

It was worth the money -- and when other kids visit they are always drawn to this thing and want to do something with it. There should be more free-form meaningless toys like this out there.

5I don't get it? by S. Kester "Pitfrog"

This thing is basically a large salad bowl with a scalloped edge and a few holes in it. It is a favorite in my house and the kids fight over it constantly. It is a chair, a stool, a helmet, a turtle shell, a home for various action figures, etc. I have four kids from 2 to 10 they love it their friends love it. It is a great imaginative outlet. I misclicked on educational this thing really makes their brains work.

5Okay toy -- may be too expensive for its function. by AmazonFan "love_good

Bought this toy for my four-year-old son. He is not as fascinated with it as I have read from other reviews. I still have to encourage him to figure out how to use it...but at this point he's not very interested. I would recommend it possibly for younger children.

5Versatile, fun, and safe by Doting Grammy

This grandmother loves finding something that is different from the "bells and whistles" toys that flood the market -- this is really unique and both kid-and-house friendly. It encourages both active and passive play, and is colorful, durable, and fun. Big enough for school-age children, and safe for toddlers. Highly recommended.

5very pleased by A. Huling

My 14mth old daughter gets many different uses out of this...she sits in it, on it, carries it, puts it on her head or mine to peek through the holes. Spins her babies in it, it will allow her imagination to grow. I would recommend this product to others.

5Careful by KL "KL"

This toy can totally miss the mark with your child. We have a fairly adventurous, imaginative kid and thought he'd get a kick out of this toy, but in the year we've had it, we've got bupkis. A total waste of space, and we only keep it out of reticence to throw it out. It will soon be off to a charity or a recycling center.

5Fun, interesting, and very creative toy! by Kristen Taylor "Moth

Stumbled across this odd-looking toy at a toy boutique while in Tokyo. It had a card attached showing a myriad of creative uses. It was so unique I bought it, even though it was quite overpriced (about $40). Carrying it around the rest of the evening and taking it home on the train was a challenge, but totally worth it as all three of my kids loved it! It's been an unending source of fun for silly hats, turtle shells, wild ride for stuffed toys, a car ramp, train tunnel, and the fave: spinning and rocking on the kitchen tile. Definitely a fun and unique toy guaranteed to get kids' imaginations and funny bones going.

5the near perfect toy by Maeve M. Heald

I bought this toy for my 2 year old daughter. the salesperson suggested it to me and I was a little hesitant. But from the moment this toy was opened on Xmas. The kids (I also have a 4 yr. old son) have been playing with it. Sitting in it, standing on it, spinning in it, balancing in it, using it as a cradle for dolls, pretending to be a turtle... I am amazed at it's imaginative versatility. Hard to believe, but this is a near perfect toy in my book.

5grandkids delight by Carla L. Crancer "cl

I bought 2 of these for my 1 yr old grandson and my almost 4 yr old
granddaughter. They just love them. The colors are bright, they can
tell which is theirs and there is no fighting. They get excercise and
have fun at the same time. I think it is a great toy

5NaturaLee, FL by M. Lee Roberts

I prefer fun toys that stimulate imaginative thinking and creative play. This toy was purchased for my 2 year old granddaughter knowing that her 5 year old brother would play with it as well. At first glance one wonders, what on earth do you do with this? Well, playing with a Bilibo is similar to a child preferring to play with the box a toy comes in rather than the toy, except much better. Turned one way it is a garage for tiny toy cars. Turned another way it is a dolly bed. It can be a hill for toy soldiers to conquer, or a small seat to sit in, or an amusement park ride to spin in. The uses are endless, and it is tough, as well as brightly colored. My daughter says it quickly captures the attention of visiting playmates. Definitely worthwhile.
