Teach Your Kid to "Bat" by CT Iskander
This was a compromise when I bought the Fisher-Price Crawl-Along Drum Roll for our daughter (Daddy picked the drum, mommy picked the penguin).
We have had no problems with this toy. You put in the 80's favorite size of batteries (C, nothing else but the Fisher-Price Open Top Take-Along Swing - Rainforest and an old boom box run on C batteries) and it's weighted fine. Maybe it didn't pop up because batteries weren't in there. The batteries add weight to make the whole thing work as intended.
It wasn't hard to blow up. The valve is more "industrial" than most valves, so I agree that it takes more than blowing up a small beach ball, but I see that as added quality and not a knock.
The only issue so far, is that at medium range, our daughter is scared of the blasted thing. Close up, she is fine with it. She "bats" it and no problem. Far away, daddy hits it and she laughs. But at two-ish feet, she screams in bloody murder at the scary attacking penguin with the creepy clown-like "huuuuh-huuuh-huuuh-uh-huh" that it makes when "batted."
And the last thing that is just my two cents, but oh well. There is no real educational value to this toy. It's fun. But really, I see it as beginning self-defense training. It says somewhere on the box that it teaches your kid to "bat." What the heck is "batting" but "hitting?" I'm all about the real toys and sick of this PC stuff, which is why I'll train her to kick the thing in a month from her Johnny Jump-Up. But whatever. I thought I'd just add that.
Don't buy by C. Bryson "cp760"
When we got this we assumed that it was like the old style we had when we were younger where you could bat at it and it would fall down and then pop back up. Nope. It would fall down and then just lay there - it wouldn't pop back up because of the way the battery compartment was. If you gently tap it with one finger it would wobble, but when my 12 mo old pushed it, it just fell over and did nothing. I had to keep setting it back up. My baby was bored after pushing it over 3 or 4 times. You'd be better off with the older style that doesn't use batteries.
First off, it was difficult to blow up. Then once I had it filled finally...the plug kept popping out. I had to tape it down! The noises it makes are very quiet. And after just a week it started to make an annoying buzzing noise, instead of the intended noises. It was a total waste of time and money.
Great way to keep toddler away from certain areas! by Anne Scherbina
I got my 10-month old niece this as a casual gift, thinking that she'd like to bat it and have fun making it make noise. From day one she was apprehensive around it, even before I put the batteries in. Once it made noise, she would have a mild freak out whenever it went off. Now, at 16 months, she still has no interest in playing with it. When I realized she was more interested in avoiding it than playing with it, I placed it in front of her parents' DVD player, whose controls are unfortunately within her reach. She stopped trying to get at the controls after that. Recently, she discovered that she could squeeze herself behind the end table and couch. I moved the penguin in front of the table, and she hasn't tried to go behind there since.
Also, if you do decide to purchase this toy, make sure you have one of those small Philips head screw drivers handy. I almost stripped the screws trying to open up the battery compartment.
And the version I got didn't have those orange feet near the bottom. Just black plastic.
Scary Zombie Penguin by Miss T
Our baby took one look at this toy and crawled up on Daddy's head to get away from it. We waited a month and tried again but even at 9 months, the site of the Zombie Penguin as it is now known, was like seeing a clown. Must be the eyes. And the cat can't play with it because the toy falls over when pushed a lays there. I thought it would bounce back up. You can't bat and wobble it cause it just lays there. Tried to give it to a friend but her baby was petrified too. We had to hide him in the closet.
Evil Evil Penguin by SmorzandoJ
I have never seen my little guy get so upset with a toy! All he has to do is look at it and he screams and cries until I pick him up and take him away from it! He is in absolute fear of this funny penguin. It was a gift from a friend for the holidays and I feel so bad to tell her this. It doesn't work for us and my son is generally a happy go lucky kind of kid that doesn't cry for anything! (he is 8 months)
My 7 month old loves her new penguin! She likes to play on the floor & kick, push on, and even "wrestle" with him! She gets his "paw" in her hand, and drags him down! She likes to watch the balls move around & seems to stay busy with this toy for a long time.
Her big brothers, 2 & 5, have been a little rough with the penguin, with no noticeable damage/wear. Hopefully he'll be around here for a while!
Happily On Our Third by Mom of Twins
There's just something about the penguin (we named ours Penelope). We have 2 year old twins who love the penguin. We got the her when the twins were about 6 months old. They pushed it and batted it around and listed to the silly sounds she makes. As the twins grew older, Penelope had become part of the family. At two years old now, they like to throw the little penguin down the stairs and watch it wabble back to an upright position. They also like to sit on it, and snuggle with it. The quality of the penguin is ok. After some use (or should I say abuse), the penguin begins to leak. When it's impossible to keep her inflated, we "send her off to her sisters" for a while. Then she re-appears in a few days refreshed and ready for more love (thanks amazon for 2 day delivery!).
The cats love it, baby thinks it is ok too by Julie
I picked this up at a garage sale over the weekend for three bucks. It was already inflated and had batteries so I can't really comment on that aspect, other than it was nice to bring it home ready to go. As soon as it touched the ground the cats were intrigued. My ten month old daughter was leery at first, clinging to me as I swatted it a few times in an attempt to get her interested. She warmed up quickly though and before long she was batting at it all on her own. She also likes to stand next to it and pick it up by the head 'feathers'. We don't seem to have an issue with the penguin getting stuck lying down. So far it has always returned to upright position. It works great on our wood floors. My husband likes to get it twirling as fast as he can and send it flailing across the living room, much to the delight of baby. The sounds are not that obnoxious, we have definitely owned more annoying toys, and you can turn them off which I consider to be a plus. As for durability, it already survived one child before we bought it second-hand, and has even fared quite well being pawed at by the cats who are entranced by the balls in the belly. Overall I would say this is a fun toy, but I'm not sure how much longer my daughter will be interested since she is already starting to walk. There doesn't seem to be much educational value, but i think that is ok. Not everything has to be a learning experience and there is something to be said for a toy that is just plain fun to play with. If you are on the fence, try to find it used so you won't feel bad if your child doesn't care for it.
Petrifying Penguin by Mamaholic
We bought this toy for my daughter for Christmas when she was 4 months old. As soon as we took it out of the package and blew it up she started grabbing for my husband. We couldn't put it away fast enough. Ever since then we have let it sit out in a corner in hopes that she would eventually get used to look of it. She is now 9 1/2 months old and still can't crawl fast enough away from it.
It does serve one good purpose in that we can put it in front of something we don't want her to play with and we can be sure she won't touch whatever it is. It works like a charm for keeping her away from the carbon monoxide monitor.
I'm surprised at some of the negative comments. We've had this toy for about a year and have had no problems with it. We've never had a problem with it not popping back up. The sounds are loud enough and has two volume adjustments. We don't think it's a piece of crap and my niece likes it.
Albert Bandura would be proud... by Johnnie B. Ward "joh
your child's very own BoBo doll. Rather scary-looking, not very much fun. I don't recommend this toy. We purchased it for our 6 mos old granddaughter-she really doesn't play with it much at all.
Very small and doesn't stay inflated by J.B. Buckner
Got this for my son's first birthday. It was not as big as we thought it was going to be and had lost all of its air before the end of the day.
Love the penguin by nlopedebarrios
Great toy from Fisher Price, fun to play with, the size is just right. Our 10 month baby hugs it, pushes it, he seems to love it. Easy to assemble, however I agree with other reviewers on that is harder to inflate than a regular beach ball. Now that he's starting to stand up, it's a bit dangerous, because he uses everything at reach to hold him steady.
On the down side, I'm not sure of its educational value, to be honest.
My Fifteen Month Old Loves This Penguin! by Brittany, Mom of Two
My daughter loves this toy. I suppose it could be argued that there's no educational value because it doesn't recite the alphabet and such, but babies learn by doing and exploring. My daughter loves to swat, tackle, and throw this penguin and it's good for her fine motor skills. I would recommend this toy!
My daughter loves this guy by K. Ram
My 11 month old loves this toy, and often tries to hug it. We've never had a problem with it, and if you deflate it, it's portable!
Great for Toddlers. by D. Mason
I brought this for my son for christmas in July so he was about 8 mo. old he enjoyed playing with it and throwing it around by the colorful hair on its head. I never had a problem with it not coming back up after falling down but I don't think my son every really gave it a chance to fall down. Now that my son is 13 mo. old he enjoys it even more because he can walk around with it. The only problem I have with this toy is the size batteries that it takes.
Great toy for the price! by Chloe Kemp "book lov
WE just purchased this toy and it is great! Unlike other reviewers, we have no problem with this toy wobbling and coming back up after it falls over. In fact I could not get the toy to stay down. My 5 month old loved watching it spin and wobble and laughed at its sounds. It was a great purchase for the price.
Penguin Fun by Cincy Mom "Ann"
I bought this penguin for my four month old infant. She loves being held at a standing position and grabbing the penguin's hair, arms, and nose. The fabric around the plastic is a soft felt material and he has fleece arms, feet, and hair. Whenever he tilts to a side the music/sound effects activate and is great for cause/effect knowledge.
Cute and Fun Toy by Ashley McCoy
My son's dad bought this for him because he loves penguins and it has turned out to be a great toy! I find it annoying after a while of hearing all the noises but then I just turn off the sound and my son just keeps on hitting it! He loves to watch the penguin wobble all around.
Unlike some other people I have had no problems with it and we have had it for a few months now. It wasn't super hard to put together, just blow it up and put in batteries. And there has been no problem with the sound not working or with it falling over and not bouncing back up.
It has been a great distraction for my son when I am trying to get things done around the house so I rate it 5 stars! To me it is a cute and fun toy!
Entertaining, Good Distractor by K. Bohnenberger
My 9-month-old loves to bat this thing around and make it play music. She laughs when the penguin makes its silly noises. If she's doing something she shouldn't be, or starts to fuss, I put this penguin in front of her and it instantly distracts her.
Fisher Price Go Baby Go! Bat and Wobble Penguin by John C. Sterling
Delightful toy, 6 mo baby attracted to it right away, however not much playing time yet. Can't rate durability since it has not been played with much. He just got it.
my daughter recieved this as a gift when she was 8 months old. she showed little interest in it at first because she was a wobbly as the penguin...lol...now she is 8 months, crawls up to it, bats it, grabs it's wings and hair, tries to reach for the balls inside...it is a great toy, have had no problems, and i say any toy that can hold up to a 5 and 3 yr. old using it as a unching bag and kicking toy is worth it to me!!
Not sure what to think by E. E. Norton
I bought this toy when my baby girl was 5 months old and she is know 10 months at first she was scared out of mind over this toy everytime it moved she should start crying and yet today she will bat at it with her hand but when it starts singing she trys to crawl away from it as fast as her little legs and arms will take her. She hates this toy she wont even play with it when I have it out. Other then that the toy is durable the cat always attacks it and no far she hasnt poked any holes in it. inflateing it didnt take long. Perty mcuh a few big breaths and i had it full of air and havent had to reinflate it like some toys become flat over time. Good toy but I guess my daughter is afraid of the black and white rocking penquin. lol
Amazon is NOT always CHEAPER. WALMART 12.88 by Chuck U. Farlie
I always turn to Amazon and usually never look anywhere else for toys but I just checked Walmart and it is only 12.88. Now I need to check my whole wish list. ha
Whats not to like?? by MusicQueen "Maria"
I read some of the reviews before buying this toy! I must admit that I almost didnt get it because some here said that it doesnt work! Well, although is has No educational value, the toy does what is supposed to do. It was easy to inflate and my son loves it!
Great toy!!!
We got this for our daughter for Christmas. It's okay, but not great. Every now and then she will hit at it, but for the most part, she just ignores it. Her favorite part of it is actually the top, purple green and blue felt things coming out of the top of it's head. Overall, though, she goes more for everything else. Just to be nitpicky, the C batteries that it requires are a pain. We had to make a special trip to the store to get some, because we never use C batteries. Save your money.
Weeeeeeeeee by Anna Gonzales "lovea
My 11 month old loves it! So does my 2.5 year old. The 11 month old carries it around by it's hair and tackles it and punches it and laughs at the noises. She loves to say "weeeeeeeee" and the penguin says it too so we all love it!!
I'm not sure what the others are talking about with the bad reviews of this toy. My daughter has one and so does her cousin and they both love it. The toy is very durable and easy to use. My daughter enjoys knocking over or tackling the penguin and then hearing what it says. She also likes to carry it around the house. She started playing with this toy at 7 months old and it has offered lots of enjoyment.
Why didn't I listen to the other reviews? by Jill Jaggard "poorji
I don't know why I didn't heed the warnings from the other reviews but for some reason I went ahead and purchased this product. Of course, I ended up returning the toy. In theory, I thought this would be fabulous fun for my 12 month old child but the product does not wobble and deflates in a matter of hours. This is really a poor quality product. Save yourself time and don't do what I did. Avoid this toy.
