Breadboard jumper wires by lupjohn
These are not toys but professional terminated wires both inexpensive and durable. They provide for quick circuit prototyping without having to cut and strip wires. I now have 210 of these preterminated wires and use them frequently. Thanks for the time savings and utility.
Great Jumpers, terrible chemical smell by PaulW
These jumpers seem to be of good quality and work well, however...
There is some kind of chemical on them that really really really smells - kind of like creosote.
After you touch them your hands have the bad smell on them. Leaving them open to the air does not seem to help. Either it is a coating (oil or some kind of toxic smelling mold release chemical?), or the plastic itself is emitting this chemical. I'd sure like to know if it's toxic.
I am going to try washing them in some kind of alchohol/soap solution to see if I can fix this. It's foul!
A nice assortment at a good price, and they seem to be well made. The weird thing is, they reek of gasoline. I don't know if it is the rubber insulation gassing off or what, but I'm going to let them air out for a few days outside before I use them.
Works as expected. by Jeffrey A. Hensley "
There's not much you can review about jumpers like these. They work great, and have been performing as expected. These are okay.
Very nice but one problem by ZoneIII
These jumper wires are very nice and they are infinitely easier to use than bare wires. However, there is one minor problem and one more serious problem that caused me to give this product only three stars. First, I wish there were some longer wires. I am using these with a Radio Shack Electronics Learning Lab and this set of jumpers does not include any jumpers long enough to reach the longest possible connections on the lab. That's a minor issue because I can just use the longer wires that came with the lab on the rare cases where they may be needed but I just thought I would mention it. However, a more serious problem is that the jumpers are not color-coded according to their lengths. For example, an orange wire might be any length or, to put it differently, there are orange (and all other colored) jumpers of all the different lengths in the set. That means you either have to dig around to find the jumper that you need that is the right length or sort them and store them separately. It would have been much better if all jumpers of a single color were the same length so you would know to simply grab a wire a particluar color. It's very odd that they were made this way. It would have been just as easy, for example, to make all white wires 2" in length, all red wires 4" in length, etc., and that would have made using them much easier. Radio Shack realized this obvious issue when they provided wires for their learning lab that are colored according to their lengths but, unfortunately, they are just bare wires.
As for the smell that some reviewers are complaining about: If their jumpers smell like mine, the complaint is silly. Yes, there is a slight smell to them but it is definitely not a gasoline smell as some complained. It simply smells like some new plastic products do or it might possibly be the smell of a lubricant used in the manufacturing process. But the smell is subtle and I wouldn't have even noticed it if I hadn't put my nose to the bundle of jumpers and it certainly won't make your hands smell. I am amazed at how paranoid some people are these days and the worry expressed by one reviewer that he hoped the jumpers weren't toxic and that he was going to air them out outside is beyond silly, in my opinion. Some people can be such spoiled sissies these days! I guess this is just a sign of the nanny state we have become.
All-in-all, these jumpers are very nice and they would be really nice if just a few longer jumpers were included (but you may never need them) and, most importantly, they were color-coded according to their length. Even so, they are still worth buying and I'm glad that I did but I would have bought a set that was color-coded according to length if I found one.
By the way, I believe someone else pointed out that Amazon classifies this product as a toy and the rating scales for it ask you to rate it as a toy (how fun it is, etc.). Amazon should reclassify this so proper ratings can be given.
Not a toy. Useful for electronic experimentation. by Mark Colan "duke-of-
When working with solderless breadboards such as the BB830, you can use any solid wire in sizes 21-26 AWG. In the past, I have used insulated wires that I have cut and stripped myself, or a similar but convenient product in pre-made form. Often they work very well, occasionally the wire bends when you try to insert it by hand.
These jumpers are a step up from stripped wires. On both ends of each patch wire is a black plastic "handle" tube that makes it easy to grasp and insert the wires into the breadboard. They will probably last longer than simple stripped wires.
If there is a downside compared to the pre-made wires, it is that the pre-made wires stay low to the breadboard (if chosen or made correctly), and these jumpers tend to be a bit too long to stay low. But then these jumpers excel in connecting a breadboard to an Arduino microcontroller, or another breadboard.
They are inexpensive. They make wiring a bit faster.
But they are not a toy. It's odd to have to rate these wires on how much "fun" they are, but I have to admit that breadboarding circuits and making them work is a lot of fun.
Uses limited by thickness of insulator at tip by Long Time Amazon Cus
As other reviewers have noted, there is a distinct chemical odor and color coding the lengths would make the wires more useful.
There is an additional problem in that the insulators (finger grips?) at the wire ends are thick enough that it limits how many can be used for side by side connections. PCB headers and solderless breadboards typically use 0.100" spacing which is narrow enough that these wire insulators crowd one another. If you plan to make many adjacent connections to breadboards or headers, you'll be better off with plain wire.
They do exactly what they're supposed to do. They seem to have a high build quality which you can't beat for the price. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that I have a lot of the short ones, but few longer ones.
Good quality - funky smell by Matthew Fries
I bought 2 sets of these jumpers, and they were just what I needed. I happily got rid of my home made jumpers from old cat 5 cable. These are thicker for higher current capability, and have a nice little rubber boot near the end.
About the smell.... Yes, mine also do smell a little. It's the exact same kind of smell that you encounter if you enter a Harbor Freight store. It's sort of a thick industrial oil smell. Since everything at Harbor Freight also has this smell, and is made overseas in china, I have a theory. The tools at Harbor Freight are shipped to the US via large shipping containers on huge cargo ships. Since these ships are at sea for weeks, it's possible that the contents are protected from rust and corrosion from the salt water/ ocean air with some sort of oil. This oil could rub off, or be absorbed by the wires, and then you have that smell on the wires.
The odor on my wires is mild enough for me to ignore it.
Breadboard Jumpers by K. Barresi
I got these so I could prototype with my Arduino microcontroller and breadboard quickly. Overall, I love the low price vs the amount of jumpers received. It has 3 different sizes, so this pretty much covers all of your jumper needs. Overall, it works very well; solid connections, and a lot of cheap jumpers. Much easier than manually stripping wire.
My only issue with this is that some of the jumpers I received had little bits of dry, clear residue on the metal connectors. It was easy enough to scrape off, but it did cause some connection issues before I was able to figure out what was causing the issues. Also, they smell very strongly of cheap plastic.
Jumpers, jumpers everywhere by CHARLIE
These jumpers allow me to be more creative with the things I try to drive with my Arduino, like sprinkler valves, since I do not have to worry about wiring them up on the breadboard.
